  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:39 PM) Probably the first time all year strength and Alexei were used in the same sentence. When Travis Wood has the same amount of home runs as your double play combination, you are in definite need of an increase in production at those positions. I'm talking about overall value. Not only does Alexei lead us in WAR, he ranks 13th in WAR among all MLB SS. No other position on our team ranks in the top half. 18th in wRC+, which is pretty good on our team.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) Value is what you worry about when you are trading with teams. I'd like him to play wherever he gives the team the best chance to win in the future. Value is what I worry about for us. It's easier to find a RF that can hit than it is a CF that can hit. If Garcia hits in CF, it's easier to improve the offense than if he hits in RF. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 4, 2013 -> 12:33 PM) Mike Trout is 6'2" 230 and he plays a gold glove CF. Jake, you've watched the past few games, any early reports on his D? I haven't seen too much definitively. Camera work is hit and miss. The way he moves is kind of awkward to me, it seems, but I haven't seen him really be challenged. He looks fast as he runs the bases though, I was surprised with how natural and smooth his gait is.
  3. Our OF is the strength of our team, other than SS. I'm happy to increase production there, but I don't like Ethier. He's basically a LH Rios who makes more money and has fewer tools.
  4. Logic tells us that taller people will have more reach. How large an impact that reach makes is unknown to me, but you often see plays where you might think, "that throw would be an error if the first baseman were shorter." I don't know how many throws that comes into play, but it certainly matters sometimes
  5. I'd like him to play wherever he has the most value. If he can be an average CF'er, or even just a little below average, he may be more valuable than he would be as an average to above rightfielder.
  6. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 3, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) Can we name em? Braun in the 12 or 12 others? ARod Cruz Melky Gio Peralta Colon I don't believe Gio was expected to be suspended
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 3, 2013 -> 08:53 PM) They gave the SS an error Ah, I see. The cameraman did a s***ty job on the play so I thought that might have been what happened
  8. Wilkins single on a liner that goes off the pitcher's mitt. Scalded.
  9. Avisail ripped a single through the middle for an RBI
  10. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Aug 3, 2013 -> 08:50 PM) Yep. Need a Konerko in is prime, an Ordonez in his early years, a 2005 Crede, guys who can drive the ball Beckham, Ramirez, Gillaspie have a combined 12 HRs. Conor Gillaspie, also known as Babe Ruth
  11. I don't think pitchers often function well as team leaders because pitchers are generally so disconnected from the rest of the guys
  12. TWTW isn't a myth. It's not everything, but if this team cared more I do believe they'd probably have some more wins.
  13. Wow, those are both homers in Chicago and doubles with most CF'ers
  14. Just tuning in, Johnson not getting his big curveball over but his slider is putting guys away
  15. Sox bullpen has the league-best FIP
  16. If you haven't gotten yourself some strange in your life, you should try it a few times
  17. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 3, 2013 -> 12:54 AM) Viciedo - 5'11" Keith Hernandez - 6'0" Lou Gehrig - 6'0" George Sisler - 5'11" Rod Carew - 6'0" Steve Garvey - 5'10" Pete Rose - 5'11" Don Mattingly - 6'0" George Brett - 6'0" Harmon Killebrew - 6'0" Stan Musial - 6'0" Carl Yastrzemski - 5'11" Sold
  18. Sweet Jesus, he's 24 years old and hasn't reached arbitration. He's not a good left fielder, but he's fine out there. Advanced metrics show that he's below average. That is okay. Dayan is young, cheap, and under our control for a long time. He's the type of player we should be out trying to get - young, potential impact bats. If he blows the rest of this season (which he hasn't been doing lately) and then can't cut it next year, that's when you try to find a comparable guy who hasn't panned out. Mike Moustakas would be another example.

Marty, you have to take into consideration how the trade market is different in the middle of a season. Most teams that anticipate contending will more or less be maxed out in terms of payroll when they begin a season. It will be very difficult for them to add a $10-15 million player with such little notice. In the offseason, many more teams have flexibility to add players that are making some money. Hence, free agency. People spend money there. Our players (Alexei and Rios) will cost less in dollars than comparable free agents. When teams are turned off by free agents, lack the money to sign them, or can't find the right one (there will be no FA shortstops of Alexei's caliber)...they can turn to the White Sox. We can kick in a little if need be to increase the savings and they will pay up in talent to make it worth our while. The right trade partner will be somebody like has been already mentioned, a promising young guy who is clearly blocked in the short term.
  20. I wonder if people will have done their homework enough to think Frank didn't juice. Just looking at his size, the uninformed would think he is just another poster boy of the steroid era. I hope more than the Chicago media and fans will know the whole story.
  21. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:36 PM) I hate this. Sorry but I don't like the stigma that a corner outfielder or first baseman has to have a certain amount home runs or power. Viciedo has power. If he can hit the ball that is all that matters. Hitting with RISP is more important then how many home runs he will get. Viciedo will consistently put up at least 15 home runs in a full season, closer to 20 I think. If he can do that and hit better then .270 I would be fine with that. Why does a 3B, 1B, RF, and LF have to have a certain amount of power?? We need players who get on base and can knock people in who are on base. Look at the Cardinals. Allen Craig has 11 home runs this year, a lot of power? Nope, but he gets hits. That is all we need. I don't think we believe has to have power so much as he has to be a productive hitter...which will require him to hit with power. Also, power normally requires size. Size tends to keep you from playing spots like SS/2B/CF. So you want the guys who aren't good enough athletes to play those positions to at least have the skill of hitting for power.

As far as seeing young guys, you can be relieved to know that Charlotte will not be making the playoffs all the AAA guys should be ready in September.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 2, 2013 -> 08:39 PM) How has Carlos Sanchez looked in his AB's Hits everything hard, but also not in a way that makes it look like he could get XBH. Hard liners but nothing with the kind of loft that makes you think it would leave the yard or split a gap.
