QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:47 PM) The White Sox certainly did not get an elite prospect back. They got a 50 to 100 prospect back. He's no where close to being elite. I suppose we're quibbling on what "elite" means. We got a top of the line, highly talented prospect that is MLB ready.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:42 PM) I dont know I think a C is a fair grade if you're grading the deadline alone. The Peavy deal certainly didn't wow anyone but it was still decent to good. Nothing else of note. I'd give the Red Sox an A+, the Cubs a B, the Tigers a D+, the Pirates a D, and the Rangers a F. PS: david.schoenfield Fans of every team think their prospects are better than any other team's. Except the White Sox. Lol so true. I think we did a good job. I think we "won" the Peavy deal in that we got an elite prospect, ate no money, and in general struck while the iron was hot - it also opened up a spot for Rienzo/Johnson down the stretch in the rotation. Matt Thornton for Jacobs - winner (though I'm sure BoSox are happy to have Thornton right now). Jacobs is a nice prospect who has a real shot of at least getting a cup of coffee in the MLB. Could do substantially more than that with his talent level. Jesse Crain for ??? - we'll see, but Hahn did a great job of finding a way to extract as much value from that bad situation as possible.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) Rondon and Anderson teammates at Kannapolis. Can't have two SS. Keith Law had been saying he had played a lot of 2B this year

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) This might be your best post ever! Indeed. Very good post.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:25 PM) Rick Hahn on 670 tomorrow after the 9am update. 9am?

There is undeniably an attitude problem with this team. It isn't the whole problem, there have been injuries, bad luck, aging, young players not taking steps forward, but also attitude. It has not felt like many players on this team cared about the results of games for much of the season.

Jayson Stark @jaysonst 1m Hearing Dodgers and Twins made last-minute deal. Not a blockbuster. C Drew Butera to Dodgers.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) Since this has become the deadline catch-all, the biggest loss amongst the whole deadline is not getting anything for Lindstrom. Even an organizational player is worth more than his production the rest of the way Might be worth picking up his $4M option to see if you can deal him next year

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) really sucks when a 3-way just fails to materialize despite expectations If it's anything like my experience, there's always only one party that ever believed it might happen

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 35s there was a 3-way trade that didnt quite make it at the end. so no more deals from what i hear. #3way

I think we'll find the market to be far more hospitable in the offseason. I assume we won't see much of Avisail this season, though, which is sort of bummer but probably a blessing in disguise.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:10 PM) Pretty s*** good deadline to be honest. Meh Good return for Peavy. No money kicked in at all so we have saved 20 million dollars and neither Rios or Alexei moved yet.

Now that the deadline has passed, it is nearly inevitable that we start rattling off wins

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:05 PM) I look for Rios to be a problem for this team attitude wise, I really wanted him gone. He seems to have become a symbol for what has been wrong with our team this year. I didn't want to dump him for nothing, but I wouldn't have missed him if we traded him. Hope he sets the world on fire for us and makes us unexpectedly good next season
-
Jayson Stark @jaysonst 1m I'm told at least one trade was completed before the deadline. Stay tuned

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) I'm with you on this, they're generally never players for big FAs and this year's FA class is particularly weak. Plus the team needs more than just a few FAs to be competitive, they need to be rebuilt completely. I see them just getting cheaper and keeping the difference. This is silly. We either need several new bats or several players to really increase production, but our pitching WAR this year is third in baseball. The rotation is really good and it looks like we now have more MLB-ready starters than we have rotation spots. No reason to tear down entirely when the pitching is this good. I'm sure we're trying to be ready for a playoff charge in 2015

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) I still see a lot of what is saved not being reinvested back in the club. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see the team adding another 20-30M in payroll this off-season. I see them maybe adding 10M in payroll which isn't all that significant. IF they unloaded Rios and Ramirez, then I could see the club dropping 20-25M in the off-season (potentially). However, I could see the team target some young players who will be due bigger contracts sooner and land those players and then extend them. We'll have a very low payroll if we go into next season as we are now. If we trade Rios/Alexei, really low. We haven't been a team to sit on cash before. I don't think we'll go for broke, but I'd be surprised if we don't plan to reinvest a fair chunk of change

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) In which case I have zero problem holding onto him. At some point a team will be in need of a RF (either in the off-season or at the next deadline) and at that point, with less cash owed, this team should potentially be able to get a good asset for him. The downside is we know Rios can be streaky and if he didn't show, you'd then be stuck eating all 18M for a relatively unproductive player (probably part of why teams are unwilling to take on his contract). Still, I'd like the Sox to pair down the payroll and free up cash to add assets. Despite these few trades, the system is still pretty barren and we are going to have a tough time rebuilding if the team doesn't have ample cash to use to add talent (this includes veteran FA's). We're going to have a buttload of money for next year

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:55 PM) I don't know if Vicedo's bat profiles enough at this point to stick in one of those positions. The good news is he has improved significantly year over year against right handed pitching and I tend to think his performance against lefties is a little fluky. Ultimately we've seen him take quite a few steps forward and that is a positive sign. We know the tools are there and this is just his 2nd full year. It would seem to be that he is potentially in line for a big step forward in 2014. I need him to hit better to move him off LF. He loses so much value if he moves out of the OF right now, with the questions about his bat. I too am very encouraged by the adjustments he seems to be making.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) If Konerko retires, who would be next in line to be captain of the Sox? Personality-wise, Gordo is the clear leader in the clubhouse

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) There will be an open spot in LF most likely after this year with Viciedo going to DH or 1B God I hope not
