  1. FWIW, HTC is still pooping out updates for the other phones it released at that time, just not the One S (unfortunately, it is probably because very, very few people got the One S).

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 08:05 AM) For all the people pointing out that few players (or none) have had as bad a K rate as Hawkins early in their careers and been successful... how many HS draftees went to A+ their draft year? Were playing there at 18 and 19? Some sure, but very, very few. It is such a small group that, really, the comparisons don't mean a ton. It is also worth pointing out that, as of a few days ago (when we were doing the FS T25 write-up), he had K'd in about 57% of his first 70 PA (until just before his injury), but his rate since then has been about 36% over 150 PA. Just something to keep in mind. 36% is bad, but isn't nearly 57% bad. Being worried about Hawkins makes complete sense. Saying he is a "bust" at this point does not. This is a really good split. I didn't know that. Great post. I love you. Etc.
  3. David Purcey can now rest easy.
  4. Bolivia not liking us probably has something to do with us sheltering their genocidal ex-President who was friendly to us as American companies bought their natural resources Link

An interesting back and forth I had, in all seriousness, was a Cubs fan telling me that their team was "home-grown" whereas the White Sox are not. Now, there are some things to settle as far what home-grown is...but to me, a home-grown player is one who was not exactly a sought-after a player and whose presence can be attributed to managerial/scouting savvy. So, Dunn is not home-grown. However, I say Alejandro De Aza is. In other terms, scrap heap acquisitions will usually pass the test - if nobody associates this player with another team, he probably counts. By this measure, we have: -Chris Sale -John Danks -Jose Quintana -Hector Santiago -Dylan Axelrod -Addison Reed -Nate Jones -De Aza -Beckham -Alexei -Dayan -Phegley -Flowers -Gillaspie Paulie is borderline to me. He was pretty much a bona fide major leaguer when we got him. He was going to be an MLBer whether he was a Sox or not. I counted him out. Gillaspie, on the other hand, may not have had an opportunity without good scouting and development by the White Sox. That's a pretty home grown team (I don't know if it's a good one, but it isn't exactly cluttered with FAs, etc.)

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 12:43 AM) If the White Sox minor league system/Bell/Lauman had some kind of track record of success...with ANY position players...in terms of taking them from point A to point B, then he (Hawkins) wouldn't be getting hammered as hard as he has been. For example, if he was in the middle of the Cardinals' system right now. All they can claim is Beckham (in the minors less than a year), Alexei and Viciedo, and all three of those guys were atypical situations. And the majority would certainly argue that Gordon and Dayan have disappointed. The jury's still out on Phegley, of course. The jury's in!!! Pheg-mania!!!
  7. The reason this got media coverage is because a grown man shot a young man dead in very questionable circumstances and no arrest was made. Also, white hispanic is a strange designation that you'll find on all kinds of official documents. You'll be asked if you're white, black, etc. and then if you are hispanic. Many researches have tried to tease out if white hispanics and black hispanics (these folks are usually from places like the Dominican Republic, where African slavery played a big role in society) have different social outcomes, so these questions are asked to pick up on trends.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 09:12 PM) I have no idea, what's the relevance? EDIT: But to attempt to actually give you a name, Russell Branyan had a 33% K-rate in the minors. That's not very close at this point - though it's not necessarily true that Courtney will maintain a 50% rate the entire season
  9. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 08:17 PM) Us talking about how we believe things should be is one thing, but the attitude I'm reading here isn't that, it's as if things should be that way and anyone that disagrees is a moron/dumbass/etc. That's not a conversation, it's a get along gang that slings insults at anyone that disagrees with the hive mind. That's why I said this thread has devolved. I think tensions are understandably high when it seems that lives are at stake. I'm trying to give everyone a pass.

  13. I thought we talk about how we'd like our country to be governed in this forum. I think this case has exposed some inadequacies in our lawmaking and it seems many others agree. I already stated my peace that it didn't seem like you could convict based on the laws at play and the evidence presented, but that doesn't mean that the laws are good or the procedures to execute those laws are good. The question at hand is whether, based on all the evidence, you think George Zimmerman should go unpunished. Not based on the law, but based on your own moral/political compass. If you were making the laws, would your laws make him innocent? Will you encourage your politicians to make laws that make this result more or less likely?
  14. Anyway, steroids in baseball and steroids in life are two different things. I don't know if I like steroids in baseball, but if a guy wants to get jacked then I don't see the harm in it. It's much worse when a guy goes to prison for using steroids and nobody bats an eye, like that is a good thing and he deserves it.

The funny thing is that if he just had a decent second half, reducing K's to last year's rate (about 25%) and hitting for a modest average, this season doesn't look all that bad.
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:09 PM) Good for them. Since the majority are ignorant of the law, we should all be. Fantastic argument. I think you're having a different argument than everyone else. We're talking about what the law should be, not what it is. We're saying that if what Zimmerman was doing isn't legally classified as threatening behavior, then it should be.
  17. I think steroid use should be regulated like plastic surgery is. You'd have to see a medical professional to do it. Steroids aren't necessarily dangerous if you use correctly (which is less likely when you can't have medical supervision, sterility of syringes, non-black market drugs)

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:09 PM) He's a bust. The Sox should move forward planning around that if they aren't already. You never plan around 18 year old prospects panning out
  19. I don't feel bad for any of these guys. I wish steroids would be made legal, but so long as they are not, it isn't fair. You can't expect players to potentially become criminals just to catch up with the other guys. Just letting it continue on where some guys can juice and others cannot isn't fair. The more guys they bust, the better.
  20. I didn't think we were debating the legal definition of stalking anymore, but rather whether Zimmerman's actions were actually reasonable in the real world
  21. Given how we've performed below our talent so far, it wouldn't shock me if we begin to perform over it with some new faces around
  22. The reward for moving up a few spots in the draft order isn't worth compromising your franchise over
  23. How's about a double play ball?
  24. Yep, never been a fan of Stone. He can be really funny sometimes, though
