QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 12:52 PM) You're one of only two people here I can think of that refuses to acknowledge that Keith Law has some sort of vendetta (or might have one) against anything related to the White Sox. I think Law is biased against organizations that he regards as stupid and I think he thinks the Sox are stupid...BUT I don't think it skewed his evaluations on prospects much if at all. He could easily have left off Flowers and Mitchell but he didn't. Law actually has "baseball reasons" for thinking Hudson and Sale aren't good prospects. The reasons might be wrong, but I don't think he's down on them because they play for the Sox. Actually, I think he's down on the Sox because they keep acquiring players like Sale that he doesn't think much of....

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) Mark Kotsay will not lose his at bats. I agree. Unless the Sox trade for Dunn, Kotsay is the starting DH for this season. We already know that Ozzie will not give Vicedo regular playing time over Kotsay. I think Teahen will play 3B/1B/RF a lot and you'll see Konerko or CQ sit more often than anyone would like.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 12:35 PM) I hope you are familiar with the top prospects from every other team in baseball. Otherwise you are just talking out your ass. Or you're actually Keith Law, I was going by Law's top 100 prospects list, which Hudson didn't make. Granted, some teams don't have a pitching prospect on there, but most do. And before we go with the "Law hates the Sox" stuff, Flowers and Mitchell made the list when they probably shouldn't have given their K rates. I think it's fair to say that Hudson's value as a prospect is certainly open for debate.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 28, 2010 -> 07:00 AM) People are acting like Adam Dunn is Albert Pujols or something. He's not. Dunn would be a nice addition but not at the price of Hudson even. The sox need depth as Freddy is still a question mark considering he has thrown a lot of innings this year. Hudson should be a keeper, even as they look to add another SP. By the same token, I think you are over-rating the Sox talent. Hudson would not be the top pitching prospect for any other organization in baseball. And CQ cannot stay on the field. There's a good chance Dunn will worth more wins over these last 2 moths than CQ and Hudson combined.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:39 PM) I wish Ozzie would let him DH. Maybe the Sox wouldn't need another bat. Well, think they probably would still need a bat. But I absolutely agree that he should DH more. They should play him till they know that he's worse than Kotsay...and right now that's still an open question.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:23 PM) People talk about Smoak being a high pick and a great prospect and he netted Cliff Lee. Viciedo was given a $5 million bonus and a $5-6 million more for 4 year. He can't be thought of too much less of a potential stud hitter than Smoak can he? Viciedo had two disappointing years in the minors and has shown no ability to draw walks. Smoak kicked ass at every level he played at...he's considered a better prospect than Beckham. Unfortunately I don't think Viciedo has 1/3 the value Smoak has.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) Good lord. Omar for player-manager. Ozzie for Spanish-language radio color man. I agree. It's refreshing to hear someone state the obvious rather than falling back to "We have everything we need here in this clubhouse. I trust my teammates, blah, blah..."
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 04:17 PM) Or that they're not foolish enough to think they can win this year or next year without a 5th starter. I don't know...Hudson is not a highly regarded prospect outside the Sox system. You would think they'd be confident replacing him with a cheap vet next season. The only thing that might give KW pause is this season, but they could either go with Torres or trade Santos for some marginal vet (like Lopez on AZ) to finish this season.
-
If all it takes to get 2 months of Dunn is Hudson and Flowers, that could be a cheap price. The scouting reports on Flowers are bad and I trust Keith Law's opinion on Hudson -- it's doubtful either of those guys ever has impact at the major league level. I can't believe that Washington wouldn't hold out for those 2 plus someone off the major league roster (like Santos).
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 06:01 PM) Elgin Slim, that's a good post and kind of scary. Sounds as if Hudson may not have "it." Looking over Law's scouting report, I think if the Sox could get 2 months of Dunn for Santos and Hudson they should do it. Law doesn't seem to think Hudson has much chance to be valuable major-leaguer and he's been spot-on in most of his assessment of the Sox minor league players.

QUOTE (kane0730 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 02:23 PM) Sounds about right. Yeah, it's true. I think people are way underestimating what it would take to pull this off. The Nationals have no need to move Dunn, they'll need a big offer to do it. Hudson, Santos, and Shirek won't be enough probably. Maybe if they add Viciedo to that package something would happen, but I doubt it.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 11:55 AM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/edwi...team-rumor.html Has to be Hudson, Santos, and some filler like Torres. There are no young pitchers that have trade value in the system. Sale is the best pitching prospect right now. Not signing Thome is going cost the Sox a ton of talent.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 26, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) Hudson lacks what has made Danks a great pitcher. The thing that makes John Danks who he is, is the size of his competitive ego and the cajones that support it. Danks cojones got him a 5.50 ERA his first year in the bigs and he was getting pounded at the end of that season fairly routinely. I'm going to guess that if you go back you'll find a lot of posts about how Danks didn't have the balls to pitch in the bigs. I know for certain that you'll see posts like that about Floyd, including a Sox beat writer who referred to Gavin as "she" (I know...can't get much funnier than that..that's why they get paid the big bucks to write). Either those guys grew some, or their problem wasn't lack of balls in the first place. I think it's the latter, but it doesn't matter. Hudson can still be a good pitcher for the Sox. I think it's crazy to criticize Hudson for having 2 poor starts out of 3...much more ballyhooed prospects than him have fared as bad (Edwin Jackson for one....Phil Hughes had a worse era in his second year than Hudson has right now). I agree that Hudson's command has to improve, but he's hardly been shockingly bad considering his age
-
Hudson may end up sucking, but it is early to decide he's crap. For heaven sake, Freddy was worse yesterday. Floyd and Buehrle and Peavy have all had more than a couple awful starts this season as well. Hudson's stuff is decent, he's still young, and his minor league numbers project him as a decent #4 starter. None of that has changed. In the Sox management/coaching group, Cooper actually seems to be able to make some pitchers better. So I wouldn't give up on a guy that could be an average pitcher for super-cheap for 3 years just yet.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 10:10 PM) This trend of "super teams" is extremely worrisome to me. It is NOT good for the NBA to have so many super stars in so few cities. Stern needs to find a way to stop this. I think this could be EXTREMELY damaging to the NBA if it continues. I think the NBA doesn't really care about most NBA cities haveing competitive. They just need interesting teams in the big cities/metro areas. I think it's a virtual lock that CP3 ends up in NY and the Melo follows next year. The NBA is not going let NY lay barren.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 20, 2010 -> 08:24 PM) Luke Scott would be a great fit and hopefully wouldn't cost too much. He'd be great since he would reduce the usage of both Kotsay and Jones. Dunn is the better hitter, but Ozzie would probably only play him at DH and we'd still see Jones in RF a lot.
-
Acquiring Dejesus for a package of Flowers or Morel plus some junk would be great (maybe it would have to be both guys...I'd probably still be OK with that). The price for Soria would be silly to pay when Putz and Thornton are in the Sox pen already. The Sox would have to trade off their major league roster for soria...it wouldn't be worth it. But I'd be happy to see Dejesus acquired...maybe the Sox could get Alex Gordon as a thow-in just to freak out Teahen.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 13, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) it's disgusting. kill yourself david stern. On the plus side, Chris Paul supposedly said that he and Carmelo are planning on coming to the Knicks to form their own Big Three there...that's a team that would be able to compete with the Heat...but we have to wait 2 years for that and I have trouble of thinking of a team I dislike more than NY and Miami....
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2010 -> 08:42 AM) We had this discussion a few days ago with poeple saying that whatever the basketball version of WAR was said that the Heat weren't yet a 50 win team with these 3 guys. Here's a roundup of the various other models, click through to this link to see the full set of links. I saw that analysis before...and I agree completely. I think the Heat will obliterate the Bulls win record this season. It's bizarre how people are underrating just how great this team will be. The Tribune's round-up of basketball writers had only one out of five predicting a championship for the Heat next season. That's crazy. I think the Heat will be historically good.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 08:52 PM) LMAO yes it would. It would be worse than the white flag trade They may not be able to do it for PR reasons, but realistically that strategy would produce a title-contending team faster than keeping Rose and Noah in long-term expensive contracts when Miami has a lock on the conference for the next 5 to 6 years. I wouldn't do it myself because punting away seasons seems lame, but I can't come up with argument that it isn't the best bet to build a championship team.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) JR won't pay the luxury tax for this. Nor should he. If he decided to pay $20 million over the tax level, he still wouldn't be able to field a team by 2011 that could beat the heat. They won't field a team by 2015 to beat the Heat. Honestly it wouldn't be crazy to start trading off assets like Rose and Noah in the next two years to stockpile picks and get ready for 2016.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:40 PM) I think this team has spent enough time praying for future FA coups. Korver and Redick on the same team? End my life. Paxson should get canned. Morrow is twice the player either of those guys are and cost half the money Redick might. Seriously, $7M next season for JJ? I can't understand the Bulls management.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:14 PM) But now you have 4 really bad defensive players in your main core with Rose/Redick/Korver/Boozer Yeah...I'd be much happier with Morrow as he at least has the potential to play average defense. The Bulls screwed up by not signing him if $4 per is all it will take. Again, you can hope Rose becomes a decent defender with a good coach. Redick's defensive numbers are actually better than I would have thought, but he wasn't playing against starters. And I'd rather have a 2 guard that can handle and guard the wing like Brewer or maybe Childress. Derrick doesn't take care of the ball well enough to be the only guy that can handle on the floor. Honestly, what the Bulls really need is for Deng to become a proficient 3pt shooter. He's much better than he used to be, so maybe it's possible....
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:13 PM) FT shooting won't improve too much, as Redick/Korver don't get to the line often. Boozer's pretty solid though, nearly 75%. It's reasonable to hope/think Rose will get to the line more often. It's an underdeveloped part of his games and hopefully a good coach can help him with it, and also he really should get more calls than he does as it is....

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) Miami is going to be on national TV for just about every single game. Miami will be in the playoffs every single year, and LeBron will be the best player on the floor for likely at least 1 or 2 championship teams. LeBron's marketing hit here might take a dive, but worldwide places like China will immediately take him to the top as they have done with Kobe after his titles. LeBron can make a killing off of foreign marketing, and that's assuming the bandwagon fans in America turn their noses up at LeBron for joining Dwyane Wade, which is a big assumption when the dust settles. I agree. People that say he'll never be considered the greatest player ever are likely to look foolish. Lebron is going to have long career and probably will win more championships than Jordan. Moreover, as you say, he will be on TV all the time and he will be the best player on the Heat. In time, after a lot of winning and a of pro-Lebron media, I think people will say that Lebron cared more about winning than making people happy (that will be the spin at least). By the time James career is done, a lot of people will believe he was in fact the GOAT. Winning and modern media desperate to cover "the greatest ever" will cover up any sin committed last night.
