QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 26, 2010 -> 08:30 PM) I kinda wish that Hawk Harrelson Night was held because we are letting him go after this year or he is retiring. no way, hawk isnt going anywhere. he is getting harry caray esque.

well they were built on pitching and defense. they lost peavy, the bullpen has been bad. it is as simple as that. edwin jackson deal has helped give us a decent starter, but freddy hasn't been too solid lately and the offense all season hasnt been all that good obviously, you can't when your DH tandem should and would be DFA'd on most other teams. that June to Aug run was amazing but unbelievably lucky. they just were never that good, especially against the AL.

what pena is doing tonight is very very impressive. i hope they can hold on for the win in this one. -
Today is about as big as it comes in terms of games with meaning. 6 back with 6 weeks to go vs. 4 back with 6 weeks to go is a huge difference. I am hoping we can pull this one out and can regroup for the final stretch. This season has been quite the rollercoaster thus far. By June 1, I figured 25% of the team would be traded but then they went on a 2 month tear. All led by insane pitching which outpitched all of Ozzie's dumb moves, nothing made me as angry as that Nationals game where he sat his 2 best players and Peavy pitched the CG shutout. We got lucky as hell that day. It seems the past 2 weeks our pitching has gone cold, both in the rotation but even moreso in the pen. If the pitching can regroup I think we have a shot but if Gavin pitches like he did last night and walks off the mound after throwing horrible balls as if he is wanting to leave the game midcount, we are not going to make it.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) Manny's a free agent after this season, so you would only be stuck with his contract for 2010, which probably has somewhere between $4-7 million on it. that is alot of money for a month and a half of baseball.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 13, 2010 -> 10:03 AM) Yes, 2007 was when Jenks retired 41 straight. and 2007 made me stop watching sox games in august because of how terrible they were. the crap they kept throwing out there in CF was horrible that season. at least that year helped us get beckham, gave danks and floyd their first year to work out the kinks.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:55 PM) Luke Scott would make too much sense, wouldn't he? yup or him...there are too many other power hitting lefties to make a dunn deal be an all or nothing. we have other options for the LH power bat available via trade.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 09:52 PM) Who's to say Viciedo might not become an even better hitter someday than Dunn? The guy just rakes line drives all around the park, why would we want to pay Dunn $45 million for 3 years AND give up Viciedo? If we keep Jackson, we have to get some lower cost players in the line-up SOMEWHERE. Yeah, just give up a decent minor leaguer for adam laroche for a much lower price. i love dunn and everything he brings to the table but laroche makes alot of sense.
-
home from work, dont want to read 99 pages....can someone summarize the boards general feeling on this deal? personally, if it is what it takes to get dunn i am fine with it. but trading for him and to pay that much money for a 5th starter seems crazy when we could of gotten lilly instead.
-
listening to the pregame on the score, farmio was interviewing ozzie before the game and asked him about getting jackson and about harrell getting the start. ozzie completely avoided mentioning anything about jackson. it just made me think he is on his way to washington. maybe reading way too much into it, but i would think the manager of the ballclub would answer a question about a new player added, not the minor leaguer called up for a spot start.

QUOTE (ICP! @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) Isnt this that time of year that Paul Byrd is available? LOL God, I would hate to have that man on my team. Always disliked his face. That is the right mindset though, not Byrd obviously, but getting a SP who is in the final year of his deal who can put up .500 type numbers and be reasonable cost wise for 1/3 of the season remaining. So that brings it to Dave Bush, Doug Davis, Brian Moehler, Kevin Millwood, Brett Myers, Nate Robertson, Ben Sheets,Livan Hernandez or Ted Lilly realistically as guys who could help. The rest of the guys in final years of the deal are either on contending teams or are real, real, real bad. Then you have guys like Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, etc, who could help for 2 months if those type of guys really wanted to come back and could still be effective. I still think keeping Hudson and trading for Adam LaRoche who could be dealt for soooo much less makes the most sense at this point.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 08:09 PM) People talk about various parks being big, cavernous, having a lot of room in the outfield (Petco, Kaufman). Other parks are described as bandboxes (Sox park, Philly, Cinci). Obviously, the infields of all of the parks have the same dimensions, and the outfields don't. Does anyone know of any resource online that simply calculates the area (square footage) of each playing field in MLB? It would interest me more to look at those numbers than it does to hear the broad categorizations of big and small. Another attribute is foul territory. Oakland has massive amount of foul ground making it very tough to keep up a high average.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 06:19 AM) Today the Arlington Heights (Il) Herald says the Nats want Beckham for Dunn. Uh, no. Yeah Adam LaRoche looks much more attractive as a trade option considering what you would have to give up.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) This series actually worries the hell out of me for some reason. Why worry, 2 weeks ago you never would have dreamed the Sox would be above .500...you also wouldn;t have though they would be 2.5 games back of the Twins. Don't worry, be happy.
