Joe doesn't seem like an "LA type of guy". At least now it is just about a 6 hour or so drive home for him. Perhaps that will make him change his mind and sign an extension. I know I am reaching here, but I really want to see him in Chicago for a long time.

If go with an acoustic, try to get something with a solid wood top, not laminate. It will cost a bit more, but it will sound much better. If you get an electric, I would recommend something with out a tremolo(whammy bar) which can make a guitar hard to keep in tune and be frustrating for a beginner.
