QUOTE(soxfan72 @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:15 PM) Been lurking and watching closely all year. I must make a STAND! Walker actually cashes a paycheck,,,, hard to believe. Sox hitters have been clueless for tooo long! Seen many little league coaches tune up his hitters way better than this loser! We got lucky with just enough last year. This guy has got to go!!!!!! This team is built around power, as was most of last year's team. The White Sox playing small ball is myth. But on the flipside check out Minnestoa's 9th. There were 3 balls that weren't hit hard at all but due to a little luck of hitting where there not by contact hitters who try to put the ball in play as well as some speed from these guys, tehy were able to play small ball to squeeze out the winning run. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:10 PM) So Ozzie pulled a rabbit out of his hat last year, but the Twins players won the game tonight? I know Ozzie gets too much of the blame on here, but tonight was as bad as I've ever seen. The blame, IMHO goes like this: 1. Javier 'I have psychological issues about the number 6' Vazquez who for some reason can't pitch through the 6th whether he's thrown just over 70 pitches (tonight) or 95. Stop sucking so bad. 2. Guillen-For using his 2 worst pitchers. 3. Cotts-He's been ice cold lately. Is he planning on getting someone out soon? 4. Riske-terrible first pitch. Bob
-
QUOTE(Wealz @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) Why are Riske and Cotts on the roster then? Riske has been solid, btw, and you're acting like he's Cliff Pollitte. I think Ozzie messed this up huge. This is a pennant race against the team taht was right behind you. When you have the meat of their order up (including one guy who always seems to screw the Sox) you don't throw your 2 worst relievers in the bullpen out there. While you do't user Jenks that early, you've got to put in your #2 or 3 bullpen guy--McDougal or Thornton. Let's assume one of those guys in and did their job. Now you have a 3 run lead going into the bottom of the 6th. Sure the Twins big guys are coming up, but who says the Sox can't score more runs. All I know if me and the guy next to me placed a bet when Riske came in. It wasn't on if Hunter would hit a HR, but rather where it would go. The closest location one. I called the Comcast Sports sign in LF and lost. It's sad that we were betting this but me and this guy both had a gut feeling. I don't normally bet make bets like where a home run goes let alone betting against the Sox on whether one would be hit or not. Bob

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 11:01 PM) The only way were getting in the playoffs is if Detroit tanks it. Minnesota will be looking at us in their rearview mirror the rest of the way................As much as it pains me to say that, it's true If we keep playing the way we have, we're screwed. Bob

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 24, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) Seems things have changed, Borass is going to be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised.... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2559736 Good. Screw Boras. Lee doesn't even need Boras to get a big contract. One could argue that Magglio needed to hire someone to pimp him out after possible being damaged goods. Lee is going to get his money. Bob

QUOTE(cgaudin @ Aug 24, 2006 -> 06:57 PM) Detroit series is done. The Good news is we're coming home to play the Twins. The bad news is....we're coming home to play the Twins. They've had our number this year, and each series looms larger as the days tick off the calendar. The worse news, however, is that Detroit is likely to widen their lead over the Sox as they travel to Cleveland to face the Indians' absolute horse crap pitching, especially loser extraordinaire relief pitcher Carmona. The division is still a very real possibility, given the Sox still have 3 more games with the Tigers at the Cell in mid September. They need to hang around where they are, 5 games back, and hopefully close to a couple of games by the time we see them again. I'm of the opinion that the Sox need to put distance between them and the Twins. I don't know how I can survive that last series of the season if the Sox lead by less than 3 games. It's time to step it up against the Twins. Sure they have a very good team. But last I checked, the Sox are no slouches. Minnesota can be beat, even if Farmer makes them out to be the '27 Yanks. They've been hot lately. It's time to figure out how to get the Punto's and Bartlett's of the world out and cool them off. Bob
-
QUOTE(stretchstretch @ Aug 24, 2006 -> 07:20 PM) Everyone knows about Mauer and Morneau, but Bartlett hitting 351 and Tyner 317, add Punto's 314 and that's five?? There's almost no sports media coverage of this lineup, just wondering why with these stats, seeing that we have only 2 regulars over 300 (AJ and Crede just under) and the sports media drools over our offense But are Bartlett and Tyner really for real? Is Bartlett the next Boggs? Doubtful. Bob

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 12:19 AM) I thought this would be a fun topic to discuss, the best teams since 1980. We could do all time but this is a lot easier for now. Here are mine 1. 1998 Yankees 2. 1984 Tigers 3. 1986 Mets 4. 2005 White Sox 5. 1989 A's But if Ditka were playing for the 2005 Sox, they would surely be ranked #1. Bob

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) Ive heard the Cubs connect to both Carlos Lee and Soriano... that would be something else if they ended up signing both. Add those two into a mix with Derek Lee and Ramirez.. not 2 mention a plus hitting catcher in Barrett and they could have a pretty nasty lineup. And no pitching Bob

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 08:40 PM) So kids, lets see how things stack up against last year. Are you still believing this team will be post-season, or do you think they are done? No fighting, just a simple "in" or "out", as we did last year. IN

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 06:13 PM) To all of those who are so in love with Ryan Sweeney as a "great prospect" and who think he is major league ready, what is it about his performance this year that impresses you? .349 OBP .449 SLG .798 OPS That isn't at all impressive. If you think he's a great prospect, then how do you explain his underachievement this season? And if he isn't excelling at AAA, what makes you think he's ready to excel in the majors? I would prefer that he shows that he can do very well in AAA before making him a regular in the majors. Long story short, he needs to spend some significant time in AAA next season before getting serious consideration for the major league team. I don't know. I'm still waiting for LTP to be the next Mickey Mantle. Bob

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Mets would like to have garcia or Javy, and because of the money they make they would both clear waivers. On the other side of things, Tom Glavine is one of my favorite pitchers of all time and I would love to see him get to 300 wins. Can't the Sox use this opportunity to put Vazquez on waivers (if he hasn't already) and see if the Mets claim him. This is the Sox chance to get out of the contract. If the Mets (or another team) claim him, just give them to him. To me this has 2 benefits: 1. It frees up $12 mill in payroll next year. 2. IMHO, it frees up a spot for McCarthy. And let's assume McCarthy doesn't have time to build arm strength fo the end of the season, I have zero problem throwing Tracey in there. Honestly, can Sean Tracey be that much worse. Vazquez is good for his 5 runs in 5 innings. That's a 9 ERA. BFD if he's a vet and he's 'been there'. He's 'there' now and not helping anything. Bob

QUOTE(Grindersrule @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 04:23 PM) I think this doom and gloom is a little over the top. We are on pace to win 95 games, only 4 less than last year. If we have a good (3 or 4 win ) series in Detroit, we still have a decent shot at taking the division. If we can step up our winning pace just a little, we have a reasonable chance to finish with the best record in the AL and home field through the WS again. Sure this is optimistic, but it is not out of the realm of possibility. Even if we fall short of this success, in my opinion we are still over 50% to make the playoffs. Garland is looking good and if Mark and Jose are on at playoff time we CAN repeat. It's gonna take some work, but this is still one of the 5 best SOX teams in the last 30 years. They can be champs again. I agree with you. It's amazing how people are upset about a team that is on pace for 95-96 wins. If before each season started a baseball god came up to be and told me the Sox would be guaranteed 96 wins a year for the next 10 years, I'd be giddy and making my plans for the playoffs. Now back to reality. Every team has holes on it. This team is still a very good team. Before I hear whining about how bad the starting pitching is, I'd love to see people's reactions if the Sox decided to dump Garcia and Buerhle over this past winter. They'd be up in arms. Kenny went out and got a starting pitcher more as an insurance policy of having 6 starters in case someone got hurt. No one here expected such a big drop off from the starting pitching, but if you did then please show me the date of that post. What KW did is upgraded the offense a lot. It's the reason we are where we are. So before anyone else cries about how bad this team is and how the starting pitching sucks, what would you have been saying if before the '06 season started KW decided to dump his starters? Bob QUOTE(jphat007 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) The Sox have been 7th in the AL in pitching the last 30 days. 4.62 ERA. Not great, but not brutal. And certainly not one of the worst performances in the league. That seems to be another big problem of late. The perception of what is happening and the reality of what is happening is also out of wack. You can say that again. I can't believe how some fans are wilting under the heat of a pennant race. The reality is on pace or 95/96 wins. That's pretty damn good. Bob

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 07:18 PM) Personally I'd like to see the Sox get creative and throw tradition out the window. Sure, stealing bases is nice and all, but I"ll take the 40-50 times more per year a good OBP leadoff hitter will get on base over what Pods is giving us. Sox really don't have a lot of guys that can take a walk outside of Thome though. Obviously it will have to come from either a trade or signing this offseason. I'll start the speculation. I think the Sox will pursue Juan Pierre. Not saying it's a great move, but based on his history with Ozzie and the fact that he may only requier a $5-6 mill per season contract makes it interesting. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:22 AM) This is the first year Beane can take any credit.... all those other playoff teams were thanks to having 3 aces on your pitching staff he never drafted. Not true. He was GM when 2 of the 3 guys were drafted. Bob

To have any chance of winning the division...
gosox41 replied to Harry&JimmyRocked's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 12:15 PM) So if we lose 1 game this weekend, we are mathmatically inelgible for the Central crown?? This division is far from over, and nothing is going to be decided this weekend. We may not be mathetmatically eliminated, but if the Sox do the unspeakable and get swept this weekend I'll bet you they don't take the AL Central. Wild Card is a completely different story though. Last Night's Loss per Baseball Prospectus

QUOTE(SadChiSoxFanOptimist @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 07:02 PM) In this article, Joe Sheehan of BP says the game was lost in the 7th by poor approaches at the plate by AJ, Cintron and BA, against Villone who was on the rocks. Kinda makes one wonder why a Greg Walker wouldn't be advising his hitters to be more patient. Good reading for Sox Talkers. I've been disappointed all year with the Sox inability to hit sacrifice flies. It seems like there's been a lot more DP's and pop outs with the bases loaded this year. Bob -
QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 11:13 AM) who is overrating the white sox right now? Ozzie? He said today the team is playing good but not great. That's debatable. The team has had some great individual games (ie beating Halliday on Friday night) but if they we're playing great they would have swept the most recent road trip. Good is 7-2 or 8-1 when you consider they played 6 games against sucky teams and 3 against a team that is fading fast. Also consider they had the lead late in the game in 2 of the 3 losses. That's not good. Bob

QUOTE(S720 @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 10:01 PM) Stick this in your mind. Anderson CAN NOT play 162 games. There will be games when he NEEDs to be replaced, and if we end up losing those games, so be it! And stop blaming every fishing thing on Ozzie. But does he need to sit twice in a week? He's young, in shape, healthy. Let Anderson play more often. In this 'old school' basebal Ozzie keeps gabbing about, players were expected to play everyday or risk losing their jobs. Now we coddle and hold hands and let a player play out of position so Anderson can get some rest. While Anderson can't play everyday, he can play 140 games a year easily. If he's not capable of that then he has issues. And furthermore a 'tired' Brian Anderson is a better option then a well rested Mackowiak when it comes to defense. So pretty please, Ozzie, with sugar on top, play BA in CF for at least 95% of the remaining games. Can you do that? Bob

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 6, 2006 -> 03:19 AM) I watched Saturday's game and caught myself wondering why I dislike Pods so much. His batting average isn't horrific and he swipes bases. He takes pitches and seems to have a clue at the plate. So is he underrated? Do you all like him and think he should be our leadoff hitter the next couple seasons? Or do you find yourself like me disliking the guy for some reason? Scotty is good for one thing--stealing bases. If he's not stealing he's useless. His OBP isn't that good. He has power. His defense is below average. IMHO, he should try to bunt for hits more because with his speed he could beat a lot of them out. He could be a better bunter. Bob

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 5, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) Here's a list of prospects/players we've given up since 2003: Jeff Liefer Rocky Biddle Delvis Lantigua Royce Ring Edwin Almonte Andrew Salvo Anthony Webster Josh Rupe Franklin "Let's Throw Chairs at Spectators" Francisco D'Angelo Jimenez Gary Glover Scott Dunn Tim Bittner (We just signed him as a FA) Tim Hummel (Likewise with Bittner) Aaron Miles Matt Ginter Jeremy Reed Miguel Olivo Mike Morse Jon Rauch Gary Majewski Brad Murray Alex Escobar Ryan Meaux Gio Gonzalez Daniel Haigwood Chris Young Jeff Bajenaru Joe Borchard Javier Lopez B.J. LaMura Tyler Lumsden Daniel Cortes Bolded players have reached the bigs. Now out of all of those players, who has had a significant or just mediocre impact in the bigs? Francisco, Jimenez, Miles, Reed, Olivo, Majewski. The former prospect that has come back to hurt us the most is.... Gary Majewski. Yes, after depleting our minor league system, the most valuable player we gave away was Gary Majewski (thus far). There's nothing saying that Gonzalez, Young or Lumsden will be better or worse than Majewski, but the past several years have shown us that we've given up very average players from our minor league system. So it says KW is good at making trades, but what does it say abour our minor league system? I keep hearing about all this depth we have. Is it true? Bob

QUOTE(Wealz @ Aug 5, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) Looks like the Sox have a real chance to reach 3 million in attendance this year. I was talking to a season ticket rep at the party last week and he said they've started selling SRO tix in order to help get to that mark. It's a remarkable turnaround for a franchise that most local media had written off as recently as 2004. I remember hearing George Ofman that year say they'd never draw 2 million again. I'm still waiting for the barrage of stories chronicling this attendance boom, ya know to offset all the stories over the last 10 years about how no one went to the park. Ofman's a dip. At least we can talk attendance here. Bob

Anyone hear the latest batch of radio spots the other Chicago team has started? It sounds like it's imitating Sox pride. They have one about why Cub fans stay for the whole game--because it allegedly means something. Also one on why they throw back home run balls. Maybe it's me, but they're 'What it means to be a Cub fan' concept is similar to the Sox Pride. I guess it's a good sign that they think highly of our advertising that they wish to imitate us. Bob

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) The Astros' payroll is that high? $18 mill to Bagwell, $12.5 to Clemens (after being pro-rated), Pettite is like at $10 mill per, Lidge is $5 mill. That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure Biggio is up there. Bob

QUOTE(Jake @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 10:05 PM) Ring turned out to be a not too terrible player. He could be a reliever somewhere, although he probably wasn't worth a 1st round pick. I didn't realizhe was still around. What a wasted pick. Bob
