Cubs conflict of interest shows up again....
gosox41 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 19, 2006 -> 05:45 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/output/sneed/cst-nws-sneed19.html Interesting Maybe Cubs brass should catch up on the First Amendment. Bob -
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ May 20, 2006 -> 08:17 AM) One has to wonder if the devil finally came to collect from George Steinbrenner, ever since he won those 4 titles and started throwing around top dollars at every free agent on the market, the Yankees havent been the same. Pavano is a puss. Not cursed, just old. Bob

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 19, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) The mock was posted on John Sickels minorleagueball site; Andrew Miller (Royals) Evan Longoria (Rockies) Brad Lincoln (Devil Rays) Greg Reynolds (Pirates) Luke Hochevar (Mariners) Drew Stubbs (Tigers) Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers) Brandon Morrow (Reds) Tim Lincecum (Orioles) Daniel Bard (Giants) Joba Chamberlain (Diamondbacks) Max Scherzer (Rangers) Bill Rowell (Cubs) Matt Antonelli (Blue Jays) Jeremy Jeffress (Nationals) Travis Snider (Brewers) Kyle McCulloch (Padres) Jared Mitchell Phillies (NYM type A) Kyle Drabek (Marlins) Chris Marrero (Twins) David Huff Yankees (PHI type A) Hank Conger Nationals (OAK type B) Brett Sinkbeil (Astros) Brett Anderson (Braves) Colten Willems Angels (CLE type B) Kevin Mulvey Dodgers (LAA type A) Chris Parmelee (Red Sox) Justin Masterson Red Sox (NYY type A) Chris Tillman (White Sox) Ian Kennedy (Cardinals) Is Kyle Drabek related to Doug? Bob QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 19, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) Since it is a subscriber only article, I'd rather not post who Callis has all thirty teams drafting (go to minorleagueball.com if you really want to see all 30), but he has the Sox taking Chris Tillman, a high school pitcher (righty) out of California. He also says the Sox have some interest in Clemson OFer Tyler Colvin, along with other guys (no first name provided, so the first names might be wrong) Jordan Walden (who can hit 99 MPH) and Kasey Kiker. Thoughts? Some don't like my thoughts on drafting and the minor leagues, but to bad for them. My only real opinion (and it will probably be ripped) is not to draft a HS pitcher in the first round. I can live with a college pitcher with more experience who had time to grow and develop (physically and emotionally) but I think, in general, HS pitchers are a waste of 7 figure bonuses. If the choice is HS pitcher or getting some immediate bullpen help, I'd take the bullpen help. If I were the Sox I'd go for the OF'er. There track record for drafting and developing pitching is anything but stellar. Bob

QUOTE(SnB @ May 20, 2006 -> 08:54 AM) Yesterday on the way to the game, I was listening to some show on the score and cubs fans were just calling in and absolutely ripping their team and organization. It is really a mess over there, not just on the field either. Maybe if they'd stop selling out every game, some sort of message would be brought across. "Interesting theory. I wish to subscribe to your newsletter."---Homer Simpson Bob

QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 8, 2006 -> 03:01 PM) A guy in my office said something about cubs fans protesting outside the stadium on an upcoming game. Its even posted at cubs.com message boards, and apparently was mentioned on the Score. Anybody heard about this pathetic mess? Cub fans care if there team wins or loses? They must be actually protesting the unfair May weather they've received. That must be it. I mean drinking isn't nearly as fun when it's 41 and raining as it is when it's 75 degrees, sunny, and the girls are in bikinis. That must be what they are protesting. Because paying a lot of money for an inferior product year in and year out and then complaining about it isn't protesting. It's ignorance and whinning. Bob

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 12, 2006 -> 04:36 PM) Yep. I've never been to Cooperstown, but I'm certain that I'll make the trip for his induction. As is the case for several others, he's the reason I am a Sox fan. I plan on being there when he's inducted. I can't wait. Bob

QUOTE(UC76 @ May 6, 2006 -> 09:17 AM) With the Royals in town, I thought this was an interesting take on the owner, David Glass, who sounds like a real piece of s--t... Of course, I hope the Sox rout the Royals every time out, but that said, it's a shame that wastes of space like Glass get to ruin all the fun for people in Kansas City. I remember when the Royals used to be consistently good in the '80s. Maybe the change is that he'll sel to someone who cares about the team. Bob

QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 10:26 AM) So far we have seen some pretty sloppy baseball in the first 4 games of the season, yet some people here are acting that instead of being 1-3, we are actually 1-33. Granted I know I don't post here often considering I'm so busy at school and with work, but this is one thing that all you naysayers need to be aware of. There are 162 games in a baseball season, so far we have played a whopping total of 4. So by the numbers we've played 4 games out of 162, which means we have played a total of 2.4% of our season schedule.....I want everyone to keep that in mind IF we do we happen to lose today. Sure we should have won that game last night it hurt, but in no way or form am I worried. If we are under .500 after playing 20 games, then I'm going to start getting concerned. Ozzie is still trying to figure out his bullpen situation, it's going to take some time for him to get a grasp on when to use guys in certain situations. Until then, just ride it out, and eventually things will be fine. CWSOX45 Sure the season is early and I'm far from panicking, but we are playing KC. It's not going to get much easier around the AL then them. Bob

Not going to panic yet, but something bothers me

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 03:43 PM) 2 blown eighth inning leads. Plus Garland blows a 6 run lead, albeit because Ozuna apparently needs more experience in the outfield to catch a flyball. This is all in 5 games. If that doesn't tell you it isn't 2005 anymore, nothing will. Maybe the Sox should carry a natural OFer on their bench. Most OFer's with a lot of experience would have vaught that wind blown ball yesterday. Bob -
Cubs, White Sox, & Red Sox scouting Juan Gone
gosox41 replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) Well if healthy, I'd like him to DH so we could give Thome and PK complete days off without having to do a thing without sacrificing our lineup. I'm against Juan Gone. He's a bum. But for those that want him, let me understand the logic. The Sox need an old rgiht handed power hitter? Why didn't they just being back Frank? Juan playing defense is a joke. Both are injury prone. Juan is washed up, but if Frank is healthy, watch out. Bob -
Phil Rogers is out with his annual article regarding the chances of a city World Series. I swear he's been doing this evey year since at least 2000. I like Phil, and if he lives a long time he may be right, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Bob

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 12:07 AM) They don't care. He made the move due to the principle behind it, sending a message to the rest of the team that if you do not listen, you will be released or moved. How much of an effect did Timo Perez's $1 mill have on the team last year? Hardly any at all. The reason people were pissed was the principle behind it...you don't give a player arguably twice as much as he's worth...if anything, $750-$800K would have been much better. In the Hancock example, he didn't listen to what the team wanted him to do. Besides, I'm sure their desired weight for him was not 207...they probably didn't have some off the wall number like that. He might weigh less than 224...perhaps 222 or even 217. Or perhaps it was at 210, and he weighs 227. Or it could be some off the wall number like that, and he does indeed weigh 224. I'm not sure how much Cincinatti cared...like I said, and YAS said, they released him to send a message. The question is, does this guy have a decent future, and if so I think the sox should grab him. Bob

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2006 -> 06:24 PM) The A's won't be out of it...but it's entirely possible that they may need pitching more than they need a bat later in the season. It's at least plausible. If Thome were to go down for the season, and somehow, Frank was having a fine, healthy season over in Oakland...and the A's were willing to take on extra salary and hurt their offense in exchange for 1 more dominant pitcher...sure I'd do it, but I doubt that's even possible for these reasons: 1. The only way the Sox would want to reacquire Frank is if Frank is having a very good, healthy, Frank Thomas type season. To me, this means he'd be on pace for 30+ home runs, playing most days of the week, and hitting .275 or up. If he's only playing 1/2 of the games each week...he's not going to be that useful or worth the price. 2. If Frank Thomas is playing at a level which would allow us to reacquire him willingly...he'll make at most $2.5 million. Billy Beane will not give up that kind of bargain unless we throw in everyone and their grandmother (would he like Buehrle?) 3. Our best bargaining chip, Contreras, could very well be more available at midseason if BMac continues to dominate and no one else develops any obvious health porblems. But Contreras also is still being paid a lot of money this season, and if the A's were to let Contreras walk at the end of the year...they wouldn't get draft picks. They would if Frank proved he was healthy and was offered arbitration. I'll give a fourth reason: As long as KW is GM, Frank isn't coming back here as a player. Bob

what reporter does the best job covering the sox?

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jan 22, 2006 -> 11:09 PM) I really think that Jay Mariotti does the best job. He isn't afraid to go against public opinion and really proves that what is popular isn't always right. Is that you, Jay? I've e-mailed Jay before to correct him on some columns when he fails to get his facts corect, and the only response was that 'dozens of people have called to congratulate him on his article.' I once replied and asked them if any of those people existed or were they just voices in his head. He never replied after that. Jay goes against public opinion to generat interest in a story. It's what a third rate columnist does to gain attention. When you have nothing useful to say, just take the opposite of the popular view. He might as well work at the Enquirer. My favorite is when he takes both sides of an issue when it's a couple of weeks apart. IMHO, Jay is a moron. Bob -
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jan 16, 2006 -> 10:33 AM) Probably not because he would be on the DL. I was waiting for someone to say that. We rip Prior now for being injury prone though most of us see the talent and how good he could be. But what makes anyone think he'd all of the sudden be healthy with the Sox? Bob

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 12:35 AM) This hardcover is coming out in March FYI. I see it's written by Phil Rogers. That could be interesting. Bob

QUOTE(LEXNLIV @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 02:38 PM) According to WhiteSox.com Sox season ticket sales have surpassed 20,000 tickets sold per game. They are no longer selling full or partial season ticket plans with post season ticket priveleges attached. Sorry for not having a link, I dont know how to do that. Mark Brooks is hoping for 3 million in attendance. That would be awesome to see the ballpark filled up everyday!!!. Bob

QUOTE(whtsox13 @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 06:29 PM) Just got this from my sales rep: Individual-game tickets to 2006 White Sox home games at U.S. Cellular Field, originally scheduled to go on sale January 27, will go on sale Friday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. online at whitesox.com, through Ticketmaster phone lines at (312) 559-1212 and (866) SOX-GAME and at Chicagoland Ticketmaster outlets. Did they give a reason why? I would think they'd want to have tickets available for sale during Sox fest. Bob

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 15, 2006 -> 04:02 AM) From Rotoworld; If he's going to get a minor league deal, we should definitely take a look at him. He'd be an excellent insurance policy in case Jim Thome doesn't recover from his back injury, which is unlikely, but it's good to keep our options open. We've still got Ross Gload around, so it's unlikely that something will happen, but Gload could conceiveably play in RF for Charlotte (even though he ain't very good at it) if Borchard does make the 25 man roster. I know it won't happen, but if you want an insurance policy in case Thome isn't heathly, there's always Frank. Of couse I'm dreaming and know it won't happen for many reasons, but seeing as how he's still a free agent and will come cheap, I can still hold out some small glimmer of hope. Bob

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jan 15, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) This guy is the quickly becoming the biggest tool in baseball. http://www.post-trib.com/cgi-bin/pto-story...z1_spor_03.htmlMark Prior has spent more time on the DL than the entire Sox rotation, COMBINED. Bobby will get his chance to celebrate in October. That's when the Cubs get their award of an early vacation for winning the attendance championship. Sounds like someone really is jealous and misses the south side. Bob

I apologize if this has been posted, but Phil Rogers made mention of Mark today in his Sunday baseball column. He said Buehrle's arm was sore after the relief apearance in the World Series and that he may not have been able to start Game 6. Has anyone else heard this, other then by reading Phil Rogers? If it's true and there is some concern it makes more and more sense that the Sox trade for Vazquez and that Buerhle dropped out of the WBC. I hope Phil is wrong on this one. Bob

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) I don't blame Owens or Haeger. here they go through a full minor league season--Owens basically his first full one--and are tired. For them to be at full strength next year, they need a break. Look at Arnie Munoz a couple years ago: had a great minor league season and winter league and then the next season, he did poorly. I agree. Winter ball is nice in moderation. Everyone needs a break from their jobs, especialy when too much of it can cause injury and hurt their long term productivity. Bob

QUOTE(UC76 @ Jan 6, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) Link On a seperate note regarding Boston Gammons and the rest of the BooYa crowd, does that ESPN Insider cost money? I can use a good laugh at times with all his BS rumors. If it does, wasn't there a log in and password floating around somewhere? Bob
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 6, 2006 -> 05:31 PM) I thought the Cubs were out of their minds to trade Prior in a package to get Tejada. If this trade goes down, either Hendry is very very stupid, or Prior's elbow is a big problem. I don't get why the Phillies would make this trade and trade for damaged goods. Was there any other player sinvolved? Bob

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 24, 2005 -> 01:41 AM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...cs-home-utility If this trade goes down like this (very unlikely BTW) KW will go back to being the village idiot. No way anyone with half a brain makes a trade like this. Bob
