It would be great to hear Ozzie go on a rant like this. Except nobody would understand his spanglish.

I don't know if this has ever been posted here, but it's the funniest thing I've ever heard. Just scroll down to 'Earl Weaver goes nuts here'. WARNING: Contains foul language http://tonic.blogs.com/human_tonic/2004/11/

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 16, 2005 -> 01:21 AM) Any plans on what they are going to do with the s*** once it passes through? That was classic.

This show was so bad, it couldn't even take away one of the 12 Best Damn.... or You get to see this slots a day. Good Riddance. He should put his tail between his legs and beg ESPN for a job, otherwise he may end up being a poor mans Olberman. As you can tell I'm not a big fan of Max.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 18, 2005 -> 02:31 AM) The only time I think rankings are worth the paper they are printed on is if I agree with them. Otherwise they are useless.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 04:19 PM) WTF? Twins at 6. Emerging superstars Johan Santana, Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer will become the best in their league at their positions, if they aren't already Morneau isn't even played to be the best first basemen and niether is Mauer in my opinion. I can't argue against Santana though. That is a pretty bold statement for 493 combined, major league at bats.

http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/8194419 I'm expecting a lot of these to start coming out. I figure the Sox will be right about the middle in all of them. Too much talent to go lower, and too many questions to go higher.

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) what i dont get is that they said the sox have really changed our team and have perhaps one of the best pitching staffs in the league, also one of the best bullpens in the league. plus the sox have a really fast team and good defense....then why are we predicted to finish as low as 4th? just wonderg what yous thoght and if yous read it...oh the sox were on the front cover.. This just seems like the trend for national writers. Everyone is drinking the Tigers and Indians Kool Aid. I, like most people here don't buy it, but we are going to hear it until the games are played. It should light a fire under the Sox this year. It is strange, everyone stresses pitching and defense so much. Then the Sox improve in both aspects and we are going to get worse.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) Ok let's agree on this much. This year will be his biggest challenge yet. But he's met that challenge by strengthening the pen. What impresses me about Beane is that he's able to always find guys (even if they just stick around for a year or two) that produce winning records & era's Let's not forget that his teams have not had an easy go at all in the past 5 yrs. Remember the losing streaks & the early deficits they faced? But when they get in the groove they are damn near unbeatable. All of Beane's A's years seem to be weak to start but strong to finish. Not unlike the Twins. We led the division for 57 days before Thomas went down & they zoomed past us. If anything maybe the new makeover will lead us to be stronger finishers. I agree with most of what you say. He does an incredible job filling voids and winning consistantly(What more can you ask for). He didn't have much choice in trading Mulder and Hudson. His payroll constraints force him to get value for players before they inevitably leave. If he continues to win without the inherited big three, I will give him his due credit. I'm just interested to say how this plays out. With that said, I just think ranking their staff top five right now is a stretch. I may certainly end up being wrong.

All these articles always forget Iguchi. Although, not too many people nationally know who he is yet.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 05:02 PM) My List 1. Yankees (RJ goes for 30W) 2. Red Sox (Schilling starting late) 3. Twins (organizational depth) 4. Oak (organizational depth) 5. White Sox (Buehrle, Garcia) 6. Angels (Colon) 7. Blue Jays (Halladay) 8. Cle (CC, JW) The report is unreal. I'm looking at these ERA's for CLE well over 5 & how he places them at 4 & then I look at the question marks on OAK with ERA's in the 4's & he places them at 7. It's a joke. Until proven otherwise Beane knows what he's doing & should produce another fine rotation. Oak SP 2004 65-46, 0 starts by a pitcher w era > 5 2003 67-52, 7 starts by a pitcher w era > 5 2002 75-41, 18 starts by a pitcher w era > 5 2001 80-39, 18 starts by a pitcher w era > 5 2000 71-53, 52 starts by a pitcher w era > 5 It's not all the big 3 (Hudson, Mulder, Zito). Redman, Harden, Lidle, Lilly, Halama, Durscherer, Harang, Hiljus, Appier, Heredia have all pitched starts for the A's over the years & have all had ERA's under 5. Beane has been masteful at finding guys to fill out the rotation year after year who produce winning records & era's Beane has to be among the top GM's in getting the most out of rookie starters the past 5 yrs. Even better than Ryan of Min who has basically been doing it with a 1-2 starter punch the past 3 yrs. Jugger, I'm not trying to downplay Beane, I just think people automatically assume every move he makes is great. I think he gets a little too much hype, IMHO. The potential of their staff is limitless, but it's just that potential. They have ??? in every spot. Will Zito return to his old form? If not, can Harden step into the #1? Can 3-5 perform for a whole year in the bigs? I would take the Sox staff over the A's, this year.

How do we know Beane can produce a staff? He didn't draft the big three. I know Beane has done well with his payroll, but it's not like he's won a WS.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 04:43 PM) My list. 1. Yankees 2. Red Sox 3. Twins 4. White Sox (We have a lot of question marks fellas, sorry.) 5. Angels I totally agree with this list. Until we prove differently, I think 4th is a fair assesment.

Marc Stein Breaks down the Baby Bulls

Nice article, it's good to see the Bulls getting some pub again. Not that they've deserved it for a while. -
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writ...ions/index.html Ahaheim, Toronto, Cleveland, and Oakland? The A's have three minor leaguers in their rotation. These moneyball freaks will always hail Billy.

Petronas Towers take that!!! Someone's getting yelled at today. If they figure it out. I can't remember the name of the anchor woman, but it was also channel 5. During the fire at the Lasalle Bank building she claimed "This is the worst fire Chicago has ever seen."

I writer who actually recognized the Sox filled their needs... White Sox Team Report Scott Merkin / Posted: 2 days ago SPRING TRAINING PREVIEW CHANGES THAT FIT:Without a Central Division title since 2000, general manager Ken Williams placed the offseason focus on reshaping his team from power-packed and station-to-station to a group based on speed, defense and pitching. In the process, Williams developed a unit that is better suited for the aggressive managerial style of Ozzie Guillen at a relatively cost-efficient price. The signing of Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez gives the White Sox a much needed five solid starters, after eight hurlers combined to finish 5-16 last year in the fifth spot of the rotation. A.J. Pierzynski provides a significant offensive upgrade behind the plate, and Scott Podsednik and Japanese import Tadahito Iguchi present the White Sox bona fide basestealing threats and on-base potential to set up the order. CHANGE THAT DOESN'T FIT: Some of the same moves that appear to have helped the White Sox on paper eventually could hurt them in a home ballpark that plays small, such as U.S. Cellular Field. Although the White Sox still have plenty of power remaining, with the likes of Paul Konerko, Aaron Rowand, Carl Everett and newly acquired right fielder Jermaine Dye, the team will miss the production provided by Carlos Lee, who was part of a four-player deal with Milwaukee that included Podsednik, and a healthy Magglio Ordonez, who left via free agency. Pierzynski seems determined to prove that past reports of clubhouse problems were greatly exaggerated, but on a team looking to foster a more cohesive overall chemistry, the signing was a bit of a risk. TO-DO LIST: Glaring needs, such as completing the rotation, upgrading the bullpen and team defense and adding speed, were identified and filled during the offseason. The White Sox are left to find a utility infielder who will primarily play shortstop and a strong righthanded hitter off the bench. They also need to gauge the health status of Frank Thomas, currently rehabbing from surgery on his left ankle in October.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball sign ups!!!
shakes replied to southsider2k5's topic in PTC/Contest/Fantasy Board
I'm interested. I've played before, but not on soxtalk. I would prefer a live draft, h2h, active league. But, I'll fill in wherever there's a need. -
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 12:48 PM) Because the NFL sucks. Don't just say "it's the NFL." That holds no value to me. You work with a bunch of egotistical punks. College players listen a helluva lot more. I can summarize this saying what i heard Taylor say after Saban got hired. Sunday night NFL game, and they ask him about Saban and he says "i don't care about Saban." They are bunch of pricks. The college game is more fun, more rewarding. To keep developing players and winning national championships is still something you can prove. It doesn't just "end." I also disagree that it's time to move to the next level always. You don't see carroll going anywhere do you? College and NFL are both highly respected leagues. Hell, i put them on the same prestige level. I don't like when everyone jumps ship to the NFL. Saban leaving, Chow leaving, etc, that's bad for the game. Hmm, why is Spurrier coming back? Overall this is a money move IMO, i think it's disappointing. I don't think this was a money move. He was rumored to be making nearly a million at USC. He has openly stated his goal is to become a head coach and he thinks this is the best path to get there. The only thing I disagree with, is if he ends up taking a the first head coaching job that comes along after a year or two in the NFL.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) Espn's John Clayton reported last night on SportsCenter that the Patriots will likely franchise K Adam Vinatieri. Kind of odd franchising a kicker but he is a Hall of Famer. I believe they've franshised him before.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) He has the Bears taking Braylon Edwards of Michigan, said Edwards has the size, speed to dominate and significantly cut down on the dropped balls/mental lapses this year. He still has Derrick Johnson too low at 12 going to the Chargers. He has my sleeper Troy Williamson WR up to 13 now. Has Antrelle Rolle all the way down at 20 to the Cowboys Has my Steelers taking Heath Miller the TE at 30. Has Channing Crowder amazingly as the LAST pick in the 1st round. Thanks for the update. I am hoping, it won't happen, that Miller would somehow slip to the Bears in the 2nd round. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:29 PM) Tee Ball stand takes his 7 ERA road show to the tigers. LOL One born every minute. They also signed 37 year old Mike James. To bad Mike Jackson is retired. It's also too bad Rick White got picked up by the Pirates.
