  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 15, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) And we have a GM who we know will be aggressive in trying to fill them. Usually yes. Last year, not so much. Cowley mentioned again over the weekend that losing the Pontiac sponsorship will hurt again this offseason. He said most of the heavy lifting has already been done. There's interest in Figgins (which is no secret) but teams like the Yankees and Cubs are also interested in Chone. The Sox don't win many bidding wars against those two teams. Time will tell what happens.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 14, 2009 -> 01:26 AM) Do you guys see any rational reason Peavy pitches again this season? We're seven back in the loss column again. What would it prove? He's our No. 1 next season. Great. Let him rest up. What good does it do for anybody to have him pitch? I don't get it. He'll probably sell more tickets with the mystery of Peavy still out there. I really really hope he doesn't get hurt during his start or two. Because when I was in Vegas before the start of the year, I took the over on 77.5 wins for the White Sox. Also, I see little harm in having him throw 4 or 5 innings if he wants to get back out there and his arm feels good. If he's sore, he'll take himself out. He's a competitor, but he's not going to risk his career for a few innings of work.
  3. QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 11, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) I like how Flowers was outhitting Carlos Santana at the AA-level... And was selected as the best defensive catcher in the Southern League... Yet was the 5th catcher picked at #20, while Santana was the 2nd catcher picked at #6. More doubles, more HRs, more RBI, more runs, more walks and less Ks for Santana. I haven't seen either of them play (outside of a few innings of Flowers since his call-up), but the numbers suggest Santana is the better player.
  4. USA Today ranks Maine South #16 and Mount Carmel #24 in their Super 25 rankings. Pretty cool to have two nationally ranked teams in Illinois.
  5. Brother Rice didn't do so hot against Morgan Park in week 1, so I really can't see them hanging with St. Rita. I went to Mount Carmel, so I've been following them. I expect a good showing on Friday against Fenwick at Toyota Park. They were ahead 37-0 before the half against Lake Forest Academy, but their 2nd and 3rd teams made it a game as it ended 46-30. Apparently there isn't much depth at MC this year.
  6. QUOTE (Tmar @ Sep 6, 2009 -> 08:40 PM) Well why does he keep bringing his bad glove onto the field then He has the second best fielding percentage in the AL among 3Bs and a UZR/150 of 11.2. In which world is that a bad glove?
  7. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Sep 6, 2009 -> 07:50 PM) I don't know what Fangraphs' calculations are based on, but it's not reality. This is how they calculate a player's worth, "Wins above replacement player converted to a dollar scale based on what a player would make in free agency." I understand that it's not realistic, but it is based on a player's actual production. The point of my previous post is that I think Figgins would be worth signing. He's a runs machine and now possesses a plus-glove.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 6, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) Yeah, after Contreras leaves, we're just not going to have enough really bad contracts. I assume you're suggesting that whatever the Sox would sign Figgins to would have to be a really bad contract? I've read that he'd probably sign for 4 years $44mil. Obviously, that's not chump change, but Fangraphs.com suggests that his output this season alone is worth $23.2mil. He's been an injury risk all throughout his career, but when healthy, he's a difference maker at the top of a lineup. Also, his defense has made major strides at 3B (UZR/150 of 11.2). Personally, I'd welcome that bad contract.
  9. QUOTE (hogan873 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) Maybe a big fight in the dugout like in Major League II. Uecker was great in those movies!
  10. This morning on 670 Steve Stone confirmed that Flowers will be called up. Also, he noted that Hudson is not on the 40man so if he's to be called up, there would have to be another move to offset his promotion.
  11. QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 08:40 PM) Randy Williams is like an effective Boone Logan. Oxymoron
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) Congrats to him. Was he a sox or cubs fan growing up??? He definitely wasn't a die-hard fan of the Sox or Cubs. I actually don't recall Cesar talking much about either team in town. The MLB.com write up from the game last night said he was a Cubs fan, but I never knew that.
  13. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) Didn't the Sox pass up on him and Garza for Broadway or was Cesar picked with Kyle. White Sox had the #15 pick, and took Lance Broadway. Cesar ended up going three picks later to San Diego. Brian Bogusevic, out of De La Salle HS in Chicago, also went in the first round at #24 to Houston. Matt Garza, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Colby Rasmus were all taken after the Sox's pick of Broadway.
  14. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 11:48 PM) Cesar Carrillo with a quality start. Still surreal seeing a guy who lived a couple blocks down from me, not to mention played in the same little league park as I did pitching in the bigs. Slav, he was also an eastsider. He lived over there on 110th. Cesar and I were the left side of the infield for two years at Mt. Carmel It was great to see him get his first win in the bigs. Congratulations Ceaz!

  16. I have tix for tonight, but the forecast looks really ugly. Ironically, these are tix traded in from a previous rainout.
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 04:37 PM) My cousin faced him in high school. Told me he had one of the ugliest K's against him. He was also a hellova hitter also. I actually wished I got a chance to face him.. But he was alittle older than me. Cesar had great stuff in high school so he made plenty of hitters look silly. I faced some terrific pitchers in the Catholic League (six went on to be pros) and I'd say his stuff was second only to Honel's. Cesar was a great hitter too though, like you said. He broke more than a few records at MC. Where did you and your cousin play?
  18. Cesar Carrillo, my former high school teammate at Mount Carmel, is making his ML debut tomorrow for the Padres. He's battled all kinds of elbow trouble since being drafted, but it's still great to see him make it to the bigs! I was able to take the day off, so I'll gladly make the short trip to Milwaukee to cheer him on! Congratulations and good luck, Cesar!
  19. QUOTE (SockMe @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 10:09 PM) Its just awful watching Castro play baseball Except on that 2RBI double.
  20. I just noticed that Saturday's game in Oakland isn't televised. Anybody know what's going on there?
  21. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) This to me is why Steve Phillips works at ESPN and not with the Mets. If JP's superiors are telling him to dump the contract - than the pressure is on him. I get that he cant just sit on an offer but ultimately he needs to take what Kenny offers so he has to sit inthe pressure cooker hoping KW doesn't make him look stupid with the haul he brings in. Now he can play chicken but it's not as though Kenny is desperate for an OF. If we claimed Rios, we are doing one of two things - trying to get him on our club or prevent him from going elsewhere. If he stays in Toronto, we continue on with our full OF and focus on the stretch ahead and then check on him in the offseason. We also know he isn't goign to a fellow contender so I fail to see the pressure. Kenny by no means needs to make this deal. It is a nice opportunity but it will be there again in 3 months without causing any potential hiccups to our club down the stretch. Silly steve phillips. Pure speculation on your part. If they needed to dump salary, then Halladay would have been traded. Nothing Phillips stated is off base if they are in good financial standing.
  22. Rosenthal says Detroit is looking into a Luke Scott deal as well. That would be another solid addition if they could swing that deal.
  23. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 09:27 AM) if Halladay isnt going anywhere, would TOR consider moving Rolen? He was being talked about in a deal that would have sent him to Cincy, so it looks like they'd deal him.
  24. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) Ao anyone who can steal a base can be consider major league quality? I question if Wise is even an AAAA player. You sure overrate stolen bases. I didn't make the decision to keep Wise over BA. That was Kenny and Ozzie. I'm just relaying what Cowley reported on 670 after the move. BTW, where are you getting this "anyone who can steal a base is major league quality" stuff?
