QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 18, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) Personally, I wouldn't call Blalock much of an upgraded bat.. if at all. Yes . . . we know . . . we've been over this

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Dec 18, 2005 -> 01:12 AM) If Garland's record is 9-11 or 7-11 on July 31, either he's had a decision in nearly all of his starts, or he's been drastically overworked. Hey why don't we split hairs here, you know what I mean. If he has a losing record with an era hovering a little above 4 his value will have gone greatly down. And didn't Jon figure in 28 of his 33 starts, i think he figured in something like his first 15 or 16, so not that outrageous for an inning eating groundball pitcher like he is.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 18, 2005 -> 12:53 AM) I don't believe Garland had what will be called a "career year". I think he just had the first of many stellar seasons. Still, I don't think he'll be with the Sox. Since he has expressed a desire to go on the free agent market, it's in the best interests of the Sox to trade him. Going on from that point, I believe that he could very well start off slow, like he had in years past. And at the deadline if he is something 9-11 or 7-11 his value has drastically gone down. And seeing how it seems extremely unlikely that he will resign or even be in our price range after this season it makes sense to me to trade him while his value is the highest. I don't know enough about minor league prospects to know who to want none the less expect, but if we could get some near major league ready talent with high ceilings I would call that a successful trade.

Who do you want to claim the last bench spot?
KWs OK for Me replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(knightni @ Dec 18, 2005 -> 12:33 AM) Ozuna, Mackowiak and Ozuna are pretty much infielder/corner OF guys. Borchard's the only one that can play all OF positions and would be the only power bat off the bench. Mack has played plent of CF in his career. He's played 110 games over his 5 year career. So he is definately a CF back-up. And now that I look he has played 232 in RF (most of any position), so hes a RF back up, along with 46 in LF. So he plays all 3 OF positions. However, I agree with you that we need an OFer who will and can play all 3 positions. Personally I'd like someone who could fill in and possibly bat leadoff, with a little speed if ScoPo goes down again this year. -

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 09:56 PM) Willie in CF? Uhhh, no thanks. Anderson would stay in CF and Mackowiak would play LF if Podsednik got injured. With the leadoff hitter being . . . . I really think the last guy off the bench will be a speedy outfielder who can play all 3 spots. As of now do we have a backup RF? Can Mack play RF? BA play RF with Mack in CF? I really dont know -
Who was the last prospect that panned out?

QUOTE(poorme @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 08:01 PM) in the past 5-7 years i can't think of too many position players that didn't pan out. mostly i guess because most of our prospects were pitchers. Borchard's about the only one i can think of. Jeff Liefer? -

QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 06:51 PM) I chose Willie because of that base hit he got in the Series. Are you going around to all the threads and basically posting the same lets keep this guy because he helped us win a championship line? I think I counted 3 of those in trade winds and now the first thread I looked at in Pale Hose is the same kind of garbage. Joe Crede is not going to become Brooks Robinson/Ventura, Willie Harris is useless on the bench as solely a 2B/CF backup with Mack and Ozuna on the bench, and we will not have the money to resign garland to a 5/60 deal that he will command in the offseason. There, I said it, now absorb, let it sink in a little bit, and realize the reality of the situation. Alright, I'm done now. -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) And that was what 2 games. The Astros tried offering Taveras to the Yanks to help solve their CF problem, and Brian Cashman said no, that should say something right there. Remember all of the "I don't want Juan Pierre because he's terrible defensively with no arm!!!!!!" talk a few weeks ago. Well that's basically Taveras, except for the 103/25 K/BB ratio with a .325 OBP. Even Willie Harris when he led off for us had a better OBP. I'm not advocating a Tavarez deal here, but from everything I've read and seen Tavarez is supposed to be an above average center fielder. He gets decent jumps but his speed alone gives him great range and he has a plus arm. I think he might of lead CFs in OF assists this year? He's not the same fielder Pierre is.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) The chances of the White Sox winning the world series in 2003 rested on Josh Stewarts health? wow. I never thought he would have had that kind of impact..... Well to get to the World Series you have to make the playffs. And with him in the 5 spot we probably would have . . . smartass

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 03:28 AM) Until he took that line drive in chest, he was doing an acceptable job as a 5th starter. Afterwards, he never could get back to that level. If he didn't take that ball of the chest in '03 I really think that season would have gone completely differently. I honestly think we could be celebrating our second World Series if he hadn't. He was doing what you expected out of the fifth starter and keeping you in the game. And with Loaiza, Colon, and Buehrle as the three headed monster of that staff we would have been tough as hell in the playoffs. Oh well, we have the trophy now so who really cares.

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 09:50 PM) Isn't there talk about Wilkerson? I'm all for giving Anderson his shot, but Wilkerson would be a good #2 hitter. Yea he's a high OBP guy, but he strikes out a 100+ times a year (147, 152, 155, 161 last 4 years). Do you really want that in your 2 hole when you are trying to move a runner over? I don't know, thats just something to think about.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) Did this really need its own thread? It just replaces the daily sign Brian Giles threads, learn to ignore any thread started by VAFan

I'm not quite sure if any one else is going to post this article. But, it might actually be the first good, possibly even well thought out article of Mariotti's that I have read, well we'll just say in a while. One also thinks that maybe Jay reads this message board, a lot of similar ideas, especially towards the end. So for one day I think we can back off for a little bit and just appreciate that he actually had something positive to say concerning our Pale Hose. Williams Now Nothing Short of a GM Gem

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) was your buddy James Earl Jones, and did "Moonlight Graham" appear on the board? I swear to god that is the complete truth. No exageration or anything. That is how it exactly happened. Me and my buddy still joke about it and probably will for as long as we know each other. It was the most omniscient thing I have ever seen.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 14, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) Blalock for sure. I love him. That homer off Gagne in the all-star game was legendary...(to me) Creepy story about that home run. I was sitting in the RF stands for the all-star game with my buddy. And Blalock comes to the plate, works the count to 2-1. This 35 year old guy next to me turns to me and goes "2-1 home run count." Puts on his glove (which I thought was hilarious that a 35 year old guy was bringing to the game) and stands up. On that pitch Blalock hits a home run and where does go, none other than straight into the guys glove who was standing up next to me. I will never forget that play. It was just the oddest sequence of events I have ever been around at a baseball game.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) *coughIchirocough* I mean, it did happen in April...and Pierre has never played in the AL...and it also happened in Seattle...so I put 1 and 1 and 1 and x together to get 4, and sure enough, after a little simple algebra, the answer is easy peezy lemon squeezy. Are you sure? I'm thinking of the game two years ago where CLee was on his huge hit streak, I think it was to get the record (28th game?) and someone tied it up witha homerun (Timo if I'm not mistaken) and went into extras where CLee got a double to lead of the tenth, or something like that. I thought that that was the game where Frank got hurt, than he tried to play with it for a few weeks. Thank after the Cubs-Sox series at Wrigley (July 2-4) he was put on the DL? Or am I completely off here?

I have 2 problems with KW considering Owens for a 4th OF spot: 1. He has never played an out in AAA. I think there is still time in his development to take him there. 2. If Owens is the 4th OF, from everything I have heard he would not be able to play RF. Who does that leave as our back up RF? Mackowiak? I think that the 4th OF should be able to play all 3 OF spots. However, the addition of a guy as versatile as Mackowiak gives you flexibility on the bench.

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 09:45 PM) There's now talk that the Milton Bradley to the Cubs deal would involve Todd Walker... so their infield would be Mueller, Furcal, Walker, Kent? eh, not horrible but not awesome (well, in that division it might get it done) Not good? That's a pretty good hitting infield. Walker can handle the bat well, Mueller is a .300 hitter, Kent although getting old is still a great hitter with some pop left in him, and Furcal is a pretty good lead off guy with some pop and a lot of speed. The defense however is a little iffy. Furcal is great, only one with a better arm than Uribe at SS. Mueller handles 3rd well, but would only say hes average there. Kent is getting old and has limited range, along with Walker having no range. Than if JD Drew can learn to hit again, I don't know who their other two starting OFs will be?

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 06:13 PM) Ozzie has said Thome is batting 3rd. It still wouldn't surprise me if Paul or Dye do, but it won't be Tad. Konerko is not a 3 hitter, he won't be all year. It will either be Thome or Dye. I think it will almost certainly be Thome. However, if we were able to acquire Pierre and bat Pods and Pierre 1-2 would we really want a 1-2-3 LH batters with Pods-Pierre-Thome? If that were to happen than something different might happen. Who knows though, I like Thome batting before Konerko, especially with Thome's lifetime OBP of over .400

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) Rob Mackowiak would be a nice pick-up for the Sox. He can play 3B, all outfield positions and a little 2b as well. Probably can play 1B also. A LH hitter with some pop and decent speed, good baserunning skill. And a Chicago guy to boot, he's not a FA though right?

QUOTE(LDF @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 08:39 PM) got to wait for the non tender contract day. i believe it is next week. i think there might some names on that list that will surprise some. some that will be intriguing. Such as . . .

No MVP this year? Really? Thats the only baseball game worth getting and they don't do it after the Sox win. Disappointing

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 08:48 PM) WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE? DAMASO MARTE DOES NOT SUCK AND NEITHER DOES VIZCAINO. BOTH HAD ERA'S IN THE 3's!!!! yes, damaso struggled and vizcaino had a s***ty first half, but RELEASING THEM? they aren't superstars, but id rather have vizcaino at his salary then be paying bobby howry 8 million dollars to put up the same ERA. and what about jeff bajaneru? is he ever going to get any love? oh yeah, and marte is a hundred million times better than munoz.
