  1. QUOTE(Wedge @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) I agree his average and slugging % isn't terrible, but that's not why this is funny. What's funny is that Billy Beane's stated philosophy is that OPS is the most important statistic in baseball: you want hitters with high OPS and pitchers that have low OPS against. What's funny is that consistently his teams rank in the bottom 10 (typically bottom 5) for OPS. Billy Beane is basically a fraud. His theory may be true, in fact, it appears Boston's team last year applied it and reaped the benefits. However, Oakland has won with the formula we're all familiar with: "put a better starting pitcher out there than the other team every 3 days out of 5 and you'll win a crapload of games". (by the way, Miles's OPS looks to be about .414, which isn't what we like to call good. For all the emphasis placed on OPS by Beane, why does he have a role on that team?). Actually, Beane (and it may more accurately be attributed to DePodesta) believes that OBP is the most important offensive stat in baseball. They actually believe 3OPS (OBPx3 + SLG) is a better indicator of offensive production. Also Miles has NO role on Beane's team because he plays for the ROCKIES!
  2. QUOTE(T R U @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:18 AM) I dont know what you have been watching but Tampa Bay is far from a good team.. They are 12-21 and have pathetic pitching (team ERA of 5.94) I just dont get how thats not a picture perfect example of bad team I think the kool-aid may be starting to take effect. Even the Royals will beat good teams. They'll likely beat us once or twice this year, too (hopefully no more than that ). No need to start elevating teams just because they beat us.
  3. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 10, 2005 -> 08:53 AM) Yeah I don't consider Tampa a bad team. 2nd in AL in average...good speed at the top and a great manager. Their pitching is why they suck and to be honest any major league pitcher on any given day can just flat out get it done. So you will lose to teams like the D-Rays sometimes. I truly believe the only real easy team we played so far was KC. No. The Devil Rays suck. The Sox just lost.
  4. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 10, 2005 -> 07:45 AM) I'm sure Brian Sabean wouldn't want to be left out either. John Schuerholz should retire the award of "best GM". Beane a close second. DePodesta is off to a good start but still needs a few more years of a track record.
  5. QUOTE(trexer @ May 9, 2005 -> 09:07 AM) We already have 3 proven closers on the team as it is. There is no need to trade for another one. Exactly. Plus Mesa is not known to do well in high profile, pressure situations. And please don't tell me being a closer for the Pirates qualifies as either. Then again this is the "pay attention to me" White Sox (some fans, NOT players).
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) And it was a very short amount of time, as Hernandez came back from injury, and not to long after that Contreras became a southsider. Yep.
  7. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 9, 2005 -> 09:45 AM) How many years did they play for the Yankees at the same time? I ask because I keep hearing that Duque has been is kinda 'coaching' Contreras this year. I believe last year was the only time.
  8. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 6, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) Whenever someone posts a new thread, and I notice someone complaining, it becomes irritating. Whenever this occures, we're creating a WSI environment in which members are reluctant to speak their minds on an issue. Well spoken Flash Tizzle! Speaking up about criticism of the media is what got me ceremoniously BOOTED from WSI. The fact that this place is more open-minded and objective (as a whole) is the reason I post here. I didn't mean to discourage anyone from posting their opinions, I was just commenting on another poster's words. You won't find me jumping into a media post and criticizing the posters for criticizing. I just ignore it or read quietly. I love the open atmosphere here!
  9. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 6, 2005 -> 11:11 AM) My impression of Burke at first was he was a butcher. just from what I saw in a couple of games Thus my "it would seem" qualifier, seeing as Ozzie put him there the other day.
  10. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ May 6, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) Also, White Sox Josh, be weary of creating threads which illustrate the local and national media biases of our club. Several outspoken members dislike this. Personally, I feel it's hilarious when members get worked up over such a trivial issue, but some feel it's necessary to enforce imaginary message board guidelines. Trivial indeed. The media is irrelevant. BLK (Be Like Kenny) > "We don't care!"
  11. QUOTE(Capn12 @ May 5, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) Hmm...would we rather carry a 3rd catcher until AJ's toe is 100%, or keep a backup infielder. That third catcher can also play 3B and 1B, it would seem. And has a better bat than Ozuna. Don't forget Gload is out.
  12. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ May 5, 2005 -> 07:32 PM) Yeah, that's why I said IMO but I'd also say he didn't endear himself to some of his former teammates on the way out. I didn't hear anything about this. What's the story?
  13. QUOTE(redandwhite @ May 3, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) I don't post here anymore ... Why not?
  14. Maybe Burke can play 3rd, allowing Ozzie to put Crede back at SS (assuming Uribe is DL'ed)! NOT!
  15. Jester, you continue to impress with the avitars!
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 29, 2005 -> 07:59 AM) I wouldn't be so sure of that, especially as we get to the trading deadline. JR went on the air a while back and said that there is still money in the budget. Plus if we can keep winning and increase the attendance, we will add someone, just like we have for years now. Lets not forget that payroll has gone up 50% from the end of 2002 until today, and JR has always added players for a team in contention. No way are we gonna pay a bench guy $4.6 mil. And that's what Polanco would be since I don't see them benching Uribe, Iguchi or, believe it or not, Crede. If Crede falls back to form, or more accurately, had always maintained previous form, then Polanco could be inserted as the starting 3Bman. But with Crede's hot start, any chance of benching him, remote to begin with, is now nil. I always though Polanco would have been a good offseason pick-up in lieu of Iguchi but so far Iguchi has impressed.
  17. QUOTE(Cali @ Apr 25, 2005 -> 12:12 PM) Lip is that you? LOL!
  18. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Apr 23, 2005 -> 09:00 PM) I heard McCarthy hasn't looked good his past 2 outings. He hasn't.
  19. QUOTE(MinnesotaBoSoxFan @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 10:19 PM) The AL East seems to be rejuvenated by the Blue Jays and Orioles, and of course the Red Sox and Yankees. The AL West will be competitive while containing the 2004 AL and NL MVPs. Here's the question: with the White Sox and Twins poised for strong seasons is it at all possible for the AL Wild Card to come out of the AL Central? MinnesotaBoSoxFan out. I believe Ryne Sandburg in his Yahoo column predicted the Sox to take the wild card. If the Sox pitching holds up and the Twins are as good as all the pundits say, I think it's definitely possible. It would be really funny to watch Georgie implode if the Yankees don't make the post-season.
  20. That was pretty funny. It's always interesting to get an opponents point of view. I'll have to bookmark that blog and check it out late in the season when we (hopefully) are putting the final nails in their coffin.
  21. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) I hope everyone doesnt get ahead of themselves, we need to FINISH a season, I have seen us start well many a time. Amen to that. Talk to me in September.
  22. QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) Throwing the other teams home run ball back is the greatest thing ever, and I wish more people would do it... thats awesome Please. :headshake Give it to a kid and make his day.
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 11:33 AM) Do you also not drive with your kids unless you have a guarantee some asshole isn't going to crash into you...? I have to drive. I don't have to go to Monday night baseball games. I've got 6 other days to choose from.
  24. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) I always took 1/2 price night to be for families and kids. It's not for people over 21 who can most likely afford to go to any game. So a simple solution would be to cut off beer after the 4th on those nights. That's enough for dad to have a couple beers and enjoy the game...and its not enough...(at least I hope) to get all the idiots drunk. Yes people will b****...and some won't come to the game anymore, but those are the fans we don't want there anyway. Great idea!
