  1. This is one of the better articles that Downey has written. Usually I find his articles unreadable.
  2. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 03:26 PM) Understood, but thats not going to be the case. We are the team that people love to hate. We are the fans that get no respect. We are the team that is going to have to prove we are good. And thats fine, no coverage is better than what they are doing now. The cubs will be the loveable team until they blow up even more than they are now. When they flop, and the fans start bailing, then you will see an interest. We are the best team in baseball, nobody likes us because of that. f*** em Right on.
  3. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 08:11 PM) I agree but i think Bmac needs to start in the minors then. Bmac isnt going to get any expiernce pitching every once and awhile in a situation where you need a long realiver. I disagree. I think he should be given his next start, then put him in the pen. I think he is ready for the big leagues, regardless of what his current numbers say. He needs some major league experience and I think putting him in the old Cotts-Viz role would work well. The bottom line to my thinking is that I think we will need our best pitchers up here later on in the season. He is gonna be in that role eventually this year, it's inevitable, so you may as well do it now.
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 12:06 AM) Clemens also has just a 1 year contract...the Yankees are stuck with Johnson until he retires. That said...he'd cost too much, he'd hurt the chemistry, he's just not the antidote this team needs. Just remember this; in 2000 we won in large part because of team chemistry. That was a big part of it. Then we added David Wells (and Clayton) and look where that got us in 2001. If we got Oswalt or Clemens we would win the World Series. Having said that, I can't imagine there's any chance it would happen. I would trade ANY 3 prospects in our system for either one.
  5. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 08:13 AM) As the season grows shorter and our lead grows wider the need for a 5th starter becomes less and less. Unless El Duque goes down completely and BMac just flat out can't cut it, we should be able to get by with a combo of those two the rest of the way out. What we need to do is solidify our chances of winning the other 4 days and since, IMO, there is no bat we can realistically go and get to assure that(in fact it can be argue that we just got that bat with Frank's return) then our best bet is to get a quality BP arm. I agree 100% with everything you said. I say let BMac have another start. I think we should keep him up here for at least a little while and do what you said. With the lead we have, a 5th starter is not that important. If we can get BMAC some confidence with some spot starts and long relief along with keepin El Duque healthy and fresh (if thats even possible, hell he may be like 42), I will really like our situation late in the season. If things start changing and it is clear that neither of them can be counted on, then maybe, but not now and no time soon. We need a bullpen arm.
  6. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 10:46 PM) The manager is in the AL East so I expect Halladay and he would be deserving. I would go with Halladay too. I just hope it's not Garland. Like others have said, there's a slim chance he could choke under the pressure and go in to funk. I want Garland right in the middle with as little attention as possible.
  7. Seeing Jason Phillips' reaction to it happening again was priceless. Great win.
  8. I luuuv Aaron Rowand ( in Hawk voice). I think it was the great Steve Phillips who called him a marginal 4th outfielder. What a chode.
  9. That guy can really go and get it. Damn good.
  10. Yesterday's game was awesome. I happened to be driving for most of the game so listened to it on the radio. I was hoarse by the time it was over. I wanted to say though that Ozzie got really lucky. There's no way Garcia should have been out there after the double in the 8th. Our bullpen was fresh. I know he has his style of letting players work through stuff and he definitely did that with Freddy and it worked out. But he should have taken him out after that double. Ozzie needs to realize that at a certain point, his job is to get wins not get pitchers' wins- especially Freddy. I wanted to say this because it is after a huge game and it's not fair to just second guess when they lose.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 01:11 PM) If we go into the playoffs with a guy who's started 33 previous postseason games (with a 16-9 record), and there's not some health-related reason he shouldn't be pitching, then he better be starting. I'd put him in my playoff rotation ahead of any guy not named Mark Buehrle, assuming he's able to go and not totally falling apart or something like that. Whoever other than El Duque has the worst September goes to the pen. I see where you're coming from, El Duque is money. But, it seems like he is ALWAYS having to pitch with runners on and almost any inning has the potential to turn into a nightmare. I think he would be better used getting the huge outs you need in the 7th or 8th inning. If anyone on the Sox can handle that pressure, its El Duque.
  12. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 12:17 PM) I think we shouldn't even be thinking about this yet. We've blown it the last few years, and we certainly aren't locks for the playoffs. Secondly, we should decide who starts and who goes to the pen by how each starter is performing when the playoffs roll around. If both of those guys are rolling, it should be another starter that goes to the pen. I am well aware that we have blown it before. If the playoffs started tommorrow, what would you do?
  13. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) im gonna make gretzkys head bleed My favorite part in my favorite movie. Swingers is so money.
  14. I know there's a long way to go before the playoffs and anything can happen, but if the Sox make the playoffs, who do you have as a 4th starter and who do you move to the pen- El Duque or Contreras? I like Contreras starting and El Duque in the pen. Even though El Duque has come up huge in playoff starts, I think Contreras is better suited to start. I like El Duque's makeup better to come in with men on and a 1 run lead better than Contreras. El Duque has had to battle basically every inning he has thrown this year because at this point he throws all junk.
  15. QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 10:14 AM) You say they don't need another SP right now... but its only June, and I don't want to have to depend on Brandon McCarthy. Why wait until El Duque gets hurt?, or until the Trade Deadline when everyone in contention is going to be looking for pitching? That's a good point. El Duque is gonna some more starts this year. I've always like Redman too. I just think that the Sox have bigger needs right now than a SP who like someone said may help GET you to the playoffs but won't really put you over the top.
  16. I can't stand Boers. I have long hated their show. It is awful. It basically sounds like a couple school girls giggling all the time. They both are know-it-alls who think they know everything and everyone else's opinion is just a chance for them to rip on that person and tell them how it really is. This is especially bad with Boers because it amazes me he still has a job in sports radio. He really does not seem to know very much. I bet at one time he did, but at this point he is almost clueless. Boers is a piece of crap.
  17. The guy who brings a smile to my face everytime is Matt Karchner- for obvious reasons. Also: Norton, Steve Lyons, Scott Fletcher
  18. QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) Uribe has spent enough time in Colorado to not be tempted by it. He will just continue to be a free-swinger. Crede is in for his defense which was pretty average today. Any hits he gets are just a bonus. Uribe still thinks he's in Colorado.
  19. QUOTE(Stocking @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 09:10 PM) sat in 158 today, leftfield. throw it back chants were loud, god i hate casual fans. Yeah, I hate that too. I guess all you can do is try to correct people and tell them that we don't do that here.
  20. I think Willie and Timo both suck. I like Ozuna better than both. I think I'd rather have Timo up than Willie. He really doesn't bring that much to the table other than that he is younger. He's fast but doesn't make much out of it.
  21. I only read the first couple pages of this thread, and I'm sure it has already been talked about, but... its the Cubs. This winning streak does not help us. I think regardless of how they do our attendance will continue to rise, but the worse they do, the more it will help us. Need to get the casual fans.
  22. QUOTE(sayitanitso @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) I like that idea better. I think we should keep both. I think we need Frank. He should get his 5 starts a week and try to get Carl 3 all over the place. He's just gonna have to deal with that. Carl really seems to be the type of hitter who would do well coming off the bench to pinch-hit. This all depends though on exactly what Everett could get us in return. I think if we can get a really good bullpen arm, that would benefit us more than Everett once Gload comes back.
  23. QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 12:26 PM) Ummm, what did Brantley say that was wrong exactly? Exactly. He did his job. Ozzie has had some bad games lately and he let him have it. I'm glad he did it. On the other hand, Ozzie definitely has the right to defend himself. I don't really put Brantley and Phillips in the same category. Phillips is 10 times the douchebag Brantley is.
