  1. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) I originally thought it was the former, but everything I'm reading indicates that it's the latter. The extreme right wing no longer has any power over him and he can get a CR passed. It sounds like he fell on his sword to protect the country from a shutdown. For 3 months.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 10:06 AM) There is a huge number of products out there that mirror the indexes, depending on what kind of account you are doing, and which specifically you are looking to get into, you have a ton of options. For example, each mutual fund firm offers an SP 500 fund of some sort. There are also many different ETFs which mirror the indexes as well, in the case of the SP500, the biggest and best is the QQQ. The Dow Jones 30 Industrials ETF is the DIA. The ETF's trade like a stock on the open exchanges. For my two cents, if you have a regular old investment account, and are looking to mimic the stock market return, I wouldn't invest in the funds, and instead would invest in the underlying major ETF. The big thing this allows you is the ability to be able to trade into, or out of the stock during any point in the trading day, as opposed to mutual funds who will take your order, but will only execute your trade after the close of trading at a set price. If I am misunderstanding you and this is more of a retirement/IRA account, those things don't matter as much an the typical SP500 fund is probably better as they will allow you to use all of your cash on hand in a purchase and will award you partial shares, versus a stock trade which will only allow you to buy full shares, and the rest of your cash will sit in the account. Thanks! Not a retirement account, just trying to move more of our money out of cash now that we have our house. "For my two cents, if you have a regular old investment account, and are looking to mimic the stock market return, I wouldn't invest in the funds, and instead would invest in the underlying major ETF." This is what I was trying to accomplish. I'll look into this today.
  3. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:27 AM) Might as well go all-in next summer then if Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers can't spend If we do not go over next summer I will be very disappointed.
  4. Hey question for thread. I do not know if I'm asking the write question as I'm searching for the answer, maybe people don't do this. I've been hoping to set up sending a portion of my paycheck monthly into an investment account to just go to an index fund. I currently have a schwab account, doesn't need to be used for this. But do you know if there are typically minimums required on index fund purchases, and if so, what is that listed price called and where is it reported?
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:40 AM) At least I won't have to hear her stumble through updates today. Classy.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:21 AM) Interesting law based opinion on the fallout from the last two days. SI NHL ‏@SI_NHL 1h1 hour ago http://SI.com legal analyst Michael McCann on latest Kane case development http://on.si.com/1OydNJ5 Thank you.
  7. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 08:51 PM) There's a near-zero chance that I'd ever vote for somebody who has never held public office to be President. I think being the CEO of a large business is an especially rotten preparation for knowing how to govern if you haven't been on the other side. I mean, plenty of generals have done this.
  8. QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 06:29 PM) Aside from my uneasiness about the Rose lawsuit, I'm really looking forward to this season. And it's unfortunate that tickets are CRAZY expensive. I used to go about once a season, but went twice in '13-14 and three times last season. I've never sat anywhere but the 300 level at the UC and don't see how I could ever sit downstairs, barring winning a contest or something. I'm doing a game in November this year then saving some room in the budget for a playoff game. Also got some pretty good seats for a Bucks-Jazz game in Milwaukee for cheap. I've never been at 100 level either.
  9. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 08:27 PM) No. There's so much loaded into a criminal countersuit. They would have to prove the woman didn't think she was assaulted and was knowingly fabricating a story. In your reply they are referring to the mother.
  10. I mean...this is Tony's Harding level weird now.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 03:07 PM) Apparently Bulls fans are getting sick of not advancing in the playoffs, and seem to think the Mayor isn't going to change things. I have been contacted each of the last 3 days trying to interest me in season tickets. Kind of shocking to me. They had really great attendance when they were the most awful team in NBA history. I guess the sticker price is getting a bit ridiculous. I think Bulls see higher turnover in their season tickets than the other major tickets in town (probably better than the sox though I tried to get them in 2011 and could have right away. Can't do that with Bears/Hawks
  12. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 03:06 PM) They need a young QB - that's why I had suggested trading for Zach Mettenberger of the Titans. He has good talent and would be a good option to a college guy. That would be a waste of time. The titans desperately needed a good qb in their franchise, and decided he was not their future.
  13. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 03:36 PM) So Romney and Bloomberg were the two most noteably to win it. Romney is probably the best and he was pretty good in his state. Never won as president but did a good job in his state. I never said CEO's would win the presidency easily, I just said, I think a middle of the road CEO is by and large smarter and more successful then a president. Oh, I understand. I read your statement as "as a president". I think it is incredible that people can run a business or huge organization very well, but I think it's a different kind of skill to run a nation too. The energy and emotional discipline required is incredible. I applaud both.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 03:32 PM) There's a lot more similarities between running a campaign (top-down control over everything, fighting for "market share" against competitors, advertising) and being a CEO than running the executive branch. The President isn't a CEO; they have to work with Congress, they cannot hire and fire at will, they have to work with other global leaders, they're not fighting for quarterly profits etc., they have control of the largest army in the history of the world. Right, but it's something they should be good at in that they can run it top down. If they can't run the disciplined communications and messaging in a campaign, that is the one thing that should translate well in the government.
  15. You had Whitman and Fiorina run crap campaigns in California, Oberweis and his perpetual nonsense in Illinois, who can forget Linda McMahon. Rick Snyder in Michigan. Corzine. Then you have Romney and GW Bush, who came from political families. And Bloomberg, who was very successful and ran good campaigns. I would say the Romneys probably the best.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 03:10 PM) She will never win the presidency (and not, not because she was a women, but because of all the layoffs she had, etc...they will hammer her like the democrats hammered her in California). I also would point out I think in many cases a mediocre CEO is probably far better prepared to be a president and far smarter then most of our presidents. But I digress cause most normal CEO's would never want to be president. Possibly, there is a lot of talent in this country and I'm sure many would-be great politicians do not want to risk their families. However, we have seen mediocre CEOs become politicians. It's a much different operation, and they haven't been that impressive. Remarkable to me is how many of them have run terribly run campaign organizations. I think that's the first sign to me if they can be good. If you can run a disciplined campaign, then I think you'll be okay in gov't.
  17. I'm sympathetic to NS's claim on this for punishing shareholders who in many ways were defrauded too. They were not provided with information that the company was going to conduct risky behavior which could come at this cost. But I'm not sure I see a great way out of it. While criminal cases should happen for those directly responsible, those cases are difficult to prosecute. At some level, the shareholders profited from fraudulent activity, even unknowningly. Should that profit be protected for them? I think part of this is just the risk of investing in individual companies. I do think there should be recourse for shareholders to claim penalties, in much the same way they can if a company misleads on their ipo filings or reports.
  18. I disagree that it was unwinnable. She had a firm full of smart people and engineers. It was likely unwinnable to force the PC market to continue to thrive, but finding hardware products to survive? Again, ss, if your complaint is that she's not the worst ceo ever. I totally agree. In much the same way a president lucky enough to be around during an economic boom should not be considered a genius, a ceo taking over a company in a industry in freefall and not thriving is not an example of an idiot. But I also don't think people are being revisionist here. Her tenure being controversial is not new. Compaq being seen as a poor purchase is not new. She was trying to hide poor performance by boosting revenue through a crappy merger...that's a very obvious move to make. ANd it failed...kind of predictably.
  19. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 01:48 PM) True but it also doesn't make sense to read for one. If a stud LT or defensive player that's on the board is way better than the QB that might be, I'd want the sure thing. You have to get studs in the top 10. For example, at this point I'd take Bosa, Jaylen Smith, the DT at Ole Miss, or either of the LT's before any of the QBs. Cook, Goff, Jones, etc could be the right picks at the time but not at this point looking ahead. They could always trade back into round 1 to take a 1st round QB. I don't really care much for hypothetical positions being safer bets. LT has been no sure thing recently.
