Iowa SC legalizes Same Sex Marriage in Unanimous Decision
bmags replied to Heads22's topic in The Filibuster
jeeze can't believe this wasn't covered yet. It makes me especially happy when these measures are done through the legislature and not in the courts. Both are preferred to nothing, but it feels like the legislative route has more permanence and popularity. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 6, 2009 -> 07:05 PM) I stopped reading the user comments on cnn.com a long time ago. They embarrassed me to be associated with the human race. Any mass publication's comments tend to be quite awful, and frankly, shouldn't have commenting. The more niche sites are where comments can be quite informative and actually helpful to the writers and readers.

The one thing that hurts this for news is obviously that you can't get color.

This would do wonders in helping students afford text books.

QUOTE (Soxy @ May 6, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) I am torn on the kindle--on the one hand I could save a ton of money buying books that way. On the other hand I love the feel of a book in my hands. Fortunately I am too broke to afford a kindle--so it's a moot point. I started to get angry with Josh Marshall at TPM when he was speaking to how he was a kindle convert. I couldn't imagine not having a physical book in my hands, the collection of them and giving and borrowing so ingrained in physical books. However, I recently got an ipod touch, and have found myself reading sooo much more news because of its accessibility. NY Times app is incredibly clean and the small size is so much more convenient. (The tribs, on the other hand, is a piece of trash. No paragraphs, really?) The nice thing about the kindle is its ad revenue possibilities. I believe I read that people read the kindle more like a newspaper in terms of where their eyes wander. In addition, NY times and others have been much more effective in helping advertisers create less noisy ads. Overall, I'd love a kindle.

The Jungle meets Brutalism: my first newspaper profile piece
bmags replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in SLaM
Pratt ~ It was thoroughly reported. My criticisms are as follows: • It takes far too long to begin. For instance: "Joel Ebert never believed he would become the student member to the Board of Trustees, and it seems he was right. Despite winning 1,200 votes, 43 percent of all cast for trustee, he will be on the outside of student government looking in next semester, where he started." And the next four paragraphs would work much better lower down. Though in your lede you give us some basic information about them being disqualified, that info would be much more effective once knowing what in fact took place. I'd imagine that the nut of this story is not that the members were disqualified. I get the impression that this has already been reported. Rather, the point of this story is all the questionable events leading UP to the disqualification that had yet to be reported on. In that, I believe your lede should change to more resemble that. For my tastes, I don't believe your transparency in how the new administration (the fraternity ones) hadn't gotten back to you should go anywhere but the bottom. We had not yet learned all the foul play that had happened, so it doesn't make sense in the middle why they should avoid you. ------- So in conclusion, it was well written. I quite envy you in that it is clear you have the ability to write like you speak. Busting through that shell is the hardest thing I've faced. My criticisms are mostly placement and editing. The first half of the story is a lot of tell, and the second half is showing. Perhaps a more narrative flow of weaving in and out of past actions and quotes from the players of the consequences could work as well. But the most important part: the reporting and voice : you nailed. -
well he really has no right to seniority on the other side, and frankly, supporting Coleman, voting against the budget, etc. I'm not surprised at this. You can't say you joined the Democrats on principal and then disagree with EVERYTHING they vote on. He even voted for the B.S. republican spending freeze budget.

It's just that rebuilding years suck.

I have to say, as an aside, Roubini's time in the spotlight has shown me a personal improvement of his to write more clearly to the average reader. His writing has really improved.

being bi-partisan to the GOP means that Obama would make stricter malpractice laws while also not seeking universal healthcare. That's called compromising.

It should be said, in Edison's defense, that Homer Simpson strived to beat Thomas Edison, and not Nikola Tesla
-
I'd be fine if she ever improved her really grating, elementary electro-pop stuff she does, I could handle that, but she seems to be complacent in not improving her beats. If I want a dirty mouthed female rapper I'll head to Amanda Blank.

Billy Mays is our Nikola Tesla

She's outstayed her welcome, I believe.

Banning laptops in a lecture is so stupid: to whoever said that. I'm sure there are a lot who are browsing when talking, but lap tops in small classes have been such an asset for me, especially in news, as we can bring up points and everyone can see what we are talking about.

QUOTE (The Bones @ May 5, 2009 -> 01:18 AM) Wow...why are you comparing any of those movies with Man on Wire? Only one could be considered in the same genre and even that movie has a completely different mood/feel. And why do you find it bizarre/strange? Yes, it's about a guy who pulls off something unbelievable and unthinkable, which many people would think insane, but it's a beautiful film that shows a man accomplishing his dream and all of the thought and creativity and luck that went into it. You hit what I was wondering. Comparing mockumentaries to documentaries?

It's starting to feel a scary amount like 2007 to me.

Mine was kind of a joke, but after two semesters of intense work in 4450 and 4460, I don't weep for the poor ad majors having to develop some pretty pictures.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/science/...amp;ref=science How insane would that have been to seen this (at the time) gigantic building in the middle of nowhere shooting lightning bolts into the sky. Tesla has so many amazing stories.

What grade would you give Obama in his first 100 Days?
bmags replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
The bad: Geithner The banks Daschle Not giving enough to public transportation in stimulus Vets not getting vet insurance if can be on spouses The good: GITMO stem cell torture Cuba relaxation Keeping Gates/defense spending reform Clinton as SOS Foreign Trip/getting IMF money Can speak coherently Stimulus package It's easy to just read the good, but the stem cell/torture/Gitmo lineup was personally a really big deal. Soooo I give them the ole elementary school 'S' -
I gave my capstone presentation on this today. Kicked ass, too.

agree with consensus. The one thing that bothers me isn't businesses acting out of self-interest, it just bothers me morally some of the countries they go to and their track records with human rights. Not enough for me to villify them for leaving, but just an, it's f***ed to give those countries business.
