Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
bmags replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
I'm looking for my AP style guide, it's not electronic, and that's the hold up. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) NO ONE has questioned Barack Obama about leaving two young children at home for extended periods of time. Why is it assumed that the wife has to raise the kids? For real this is an odd assertion, but on the otherhand it's coming from women that's she's trying to court.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:03 PM) Most people west of New York? Oh bollocks. Everyone in this forum knows he was a democrat, everyone in this forum is west of new york. The TV, newspaper, radio media all was covering him and all knew about them being democrat. what makes it more relevant when they are republicans with gay sex scandals is that often times they were opponents of gay rights bills. And that's funny. You have to admit. -
QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) No way. Obama's race is predicated on the illusion that a McCain regime would be a third term of Bush/Cheney, and bringing in one of Bush's top people would've completely validated that criticism. McCain needed to reach as far away from Bush as he could. It's sad because, under different circumstances, I agree that Condi would've been an excellent choice. McCain also needed somebody who isn't a multi-millionaire, which is most likely why Romney didn't get the nod. As for Palin undercutting McCain's "experience" argument, I think that much of that argument died when Obama chose Biden. And it didn't work very well for Hillary, either. McCain will go after Obama on accomplishments, judgement, and his liberal voting record. Even at the convention they are still hitting his experience though. BUt I agree, I'm still shocked he didn't pick Pawlenty though. He's not connected to Bush and is very popular in a democratic state, a state that McCain is pushing towards tossup (no way in hell though)

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) OK, it's not AP, but let's go with the NY Times. When talking about former govenor George Ryan, it takes 4 paragraphs to mention he was a Republican governor. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/08/us/08ryan.html But when talking about current mayor Kwame kilpatrick, the mention it as a 1 line sentance, 3rd to last paragraph. If you are in journalism, you know that most people don't always finish stories, which is why important facts are mentioned early in the story http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/us/03det...&ei=5087%0A Spokane mayor is sex scandal! First sentance names him as a Republican http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/223201_west06.html AP story about McGreevy, a pretty sorid affair itself, not one mention that he wears a D. Not even a throway line at the end. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/08/...in4333300.shtml Laziness, agenda, both? In the last post about this I linked to 2 stories by the same writer, one about a D and one about an R. Guess where the R was mentioned? I am sure this isn't 'official', but it doesn't mention anything about political designations and how to do them. http://www.scribd.com/doc/2664713/Associat...uide-the-basics Okay. now here's the thing alpha. For one, this would've worked if you used one source (NYTimes), but you spread it out over 4 sources. And the one source with two entries, you mirrored my exact point, state v. local. Individual papers have their own individual styles. Perhaps in Detroit where the city is bigger and more aware of parties for local gov'ts, their paper would acknowledge these attributes. For instance, here's how the seattle times: When a married politician resigns after allegations that he had sex with a young man in an out-of-town hotel room — particularly when he tips off the cops himself — the obvious question is: "What was he thinking?" In the case of state Rep. Richard Curtis, a 48-year-old Republican from La Center, Clark County, no one knows — yet. Curtis, who resigned Wednesday, has declined to elaborate, on the advice of his lawyer. But because cases like his are becoming so familiar, experts in politics, risk-taking behavior and psychology have plenty to say. They recall the indiscretions of former President Bill "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton; former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, who announced on live television in 2004 that he was a "gay American"; and the late Spokane Mayor Jim West, who last year was ousted from office after a scandal involving alleged gay sex. Congressman almost always are identified right after, then the author gives out three examples, two democrats and the spokane mayor, without mentioning parties. Now what's further, with this Jim West character, don't you think it is part of the story that he ROUTINELY voted against gay rights bills yet was in homosexual activity? Don't you think that is part of the story? And further, lets look at the liberal new york times on mcgreevey "Gov. James E. McGreevey of New Jersey disclosed on Thursday that he was gay and had had an affair with another man, and announced that he would resign on Nov. 15, more than a year before his term would have expired. In a somber and unexpected announcement, while his wife and parents stood with him, the governor said his decision to step down from office was prompted by the conclusion that the circumstances surrounding the affair would impair his ability to govern. Aides to the governor, a Democrat, said the affair was with a former aide, Golan Cipel, who was hired by the governor in 2002 as an adviser to the state Office of Homeland Security. He resigned eight months later as a special adviser to the governor, at a salary of $110,000. The aides said Mr. Cipel had threatened to file a lawsuit accusing the governor of sexual harassment." and you are right, that wasn't official. -
I'd also argue about whether Diddy has fans beyond those trying to become his assistant.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 05:00 PM) Two things: Pawlenty has something in his backgound that was going to get hammered, even worse then what we're seeing now. . telecomm stuff?

Honestly, if he picked pawlenty he'd be having a much better convention. With Gustav clearing it would all have been been about the republicans right now. The media would still be talking about the successful economy up in Minnesota, the media had already largely vetted Pawlenty themselves. Instead, they bombed the media with a new governor from a state that has NOOOOOthing close to a media outlet that anyone pays attention to. And they are surprised the media is doing hardcore digging? They can't have been this blind, unless they hope this gender card they are playing is going to work.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) Well said. however, even in the newspapers, is it laziness or willing deceit that they forget to mention that Kwame Kilpatrick is a Democrat but blare in the first sentance that Larry Craig is a Republican. And yes, I know one is a Senator and one is a mayor, but there isn't an official style sheet that says only list party designations if it is a Senator or US Rep. Some reporters truncate quotes, or use the infamous 'some say' to bring up a point that they thinke needs mentioning. Some are lazy, some have agendas, some have favorites that color their writing styles, some ask softball questions to people they like, some are just plain idiots. I disagree with you, there is an official style sheet for the AP. I don't think I've ever put affiliation for local politics. State level, yes. But local, even if they affiliate themselves to a party sometimes it's meaningless. Obviously for detroit it is something, but at the local level I've never seen us put party affiliation. I've never seen it on articles of Guiliani or Daley either. -

more than that, Edwards then was a former senator, former presidential candidate when the story finally came to light. Right now there is a huge election going on, situation in Georgia, situation in Afghanistan and Iraq, how reluctant would you be as an editor to waste precious resources on a sex scandal reported by the enquirer? -

QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 05:03 AM) I think Genius hit it half on the head. From the left, the media looks conservative, from the right, it looks liberal. It is impossible to balance a story about Monica Lewinsky or Larry Craig. With those kinds of stories it may be impossible to balance the newspaper that day. They have to take the stories as they come. What I think has hurt our journalists is we've allowed the business side to get into the newsroom. Ratings driven stories abound. How much time was devoted to Natalie Holloway? Was that a liberal or conservative story? So to make profits, the media is forced to cover a 17 year old girl because without the story, viewers and readers will switch channels or buy the other paper. / thread. -

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 01:45 AM) Well most people in the buster follow politics at least mildly so we have heard about Rezco to some extent, especially us living in Chicago. However, there has been more coverage of Bristol Palin from the MSM the past three days than there has been about Rezco in 19 months. Theres no doubt that there are significantly more people that dont follow politics that know that she is pregnant that probably have no idea who Tony Rezco is or why he is going to jail. I guarantee you people in Illinois know more about Tony Rezko than they know about Bristol Palin. And the difference between Rezko and Palin is timing. If all of this came out about Obama's home purchase yesterday, there would be a frenzy. But it came out in december 2006, before his candidacy I believe. And since then, it really hasn't gained steam. And don't tell me the Tribune didn't try to nail him on Rezko. There was the day reporter after reporter from the tribune grilled him and he walked off the stage. But then, you have to say this effectively killed the story: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion...0,7855333.story If there's nothing illegal there it's hard to merely just state that he knew him over and over. It's a bad connection to have, but it's not 24/7 coverage sustained over however long these many months have been bad, you must concede. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:44 PM) Imagine if Daley was running for president. lolz. The best Chicago Reader article I've ever seen started off with a 4 paragraph story of a boy taking his mother home from the hospital after their stepfather had beat her. He asked her why she keeps going back. She replied, "It's not that bad". And then it proceeded to talk about the s*** that Mayor Daley was doing. It was excellent.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 2, 2008 -> 10:43 PM) Honestly, there really is no convincing you of any bias, so as far as you are concerned nothing could ever be proven as far as a media bias. You think the NY Times is a complete unbiased news source. I'm not trying to insult you, I just think you have a very skewed view of what is appropriate or fair journalism. There is no such thing as a complete unbiased news source. But what you believe is fair journalism (pro-right) and what I believe is fair journalism (call it as is) are two different things.
