  1. slick willy was at Mizzou today. Long line. Missed it. I wouldn't much care at all for him talking about Hillary but I would enjoy seeing an Ex-President speak. Instead I went to get Barbecue though. Fantastic barbecue.
  2. my great uncle lifelong soxfan hates bill veeck for shipping some 1basemen to washington for a couple nobodies. I forgot the story.
  3. I am in disbelief we beat Kstate. I was fed up with Anderson after that Hannah incident, but his response with suspensions and how his team has responded has boosted him up quite a bit in my book.
  4. I don't know, I don't feel like juries follow that 'beyond a reasonable doubt' thing anymore.
  5. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jan 31, 2008 -> 05:40 AM) <!--quoteo(post=1566653:date=Jan 29, 2008 -> 02:34 PM:name=Heads22)-->QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) <!--quotec-->80-44 w/Pods in 2005 19-19 without. I got as fed up with Pods as everyone the last couple of years, but it's borderline retarded to say that he didn't have a big effect on that 2005 team. That is not a scientific analysis. It seems as though in the years you were fed up with Podsednik, he had a greater impact on our win total (using your method) than he did in 2005. We should get him back from the Rockies and start him no matter what, we would probably take the division. to be fair, at the start of 2007, he was literally the only offensive highlight for us.
  6. what's funny is I looked at that after I wrote it and wondered whether to shift it to gender...I decided not to. Shame on you Jim, shame. haha.
  7. I don't know the answer to this question, but I feel like in the political world, it would be easier for a black male than a female to lead America - America being key. In the corporate world, I have no experience. I know as a 21 year old student that I'd have no reason to care about sex if I was hiring. In any accelerated classes I've had they were dominated by girls in high school, and in the journalism school women have been the hardest working in the newsroom. In any light, I feel like they are a lot more included than the black students at the journalism school, who I feel like have a burden to be used as a voice for the black community. This is possibly true for hispanic students, they do have Adelante` to work for, but there are so little hispanics at Mizzou, I don't have an opinion. But I feel Hillary feels a need to appear overly strong in her politics to contrast the thought that women are weak as rulers, and that scares me, as a leader. I don't really think America has the right to be as controlling in world politics with our military might as we once were able to get away with, so I'd like the opposite approach. So politically, I feel sexism prevails further than racism, if both candidates are considered having crossover appeal. but in one note, damn it's easier being a woman and trying to find college housing. That is some straight sexist s*** they pull on dudes in college. We had a house lined up, they said it was ours, then they found women tenants who applied and they gave it to them. Bravo, women, for your less destructive sisters to my caveman brothers.
  8. i'd take aramis ramirez over joe crede.

i was thinking about it today. I'm less upset. It was probably a lot of early teenagers getting into a pg 13 that is kind of raunchy and silly. It fits their age group. This offends me less than norbit being up for an oscar.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) Owens is not such a good CF that the difference here will be very large, unless Swisher is just godawful out there. He has to be Mackowiak level, where him being out there costs us a run or two a game, before it really catches up with us. If we were talking the difference between Anderson and Swisher defensively...ok, that's pretty big, but the difference with the bats is even bigger. I haven't seen a scouting report on swishers D in CF since he has been acquired. a handful of people on this site have worried about him being mackowiak bad because of his lack of experience and the # of games making it seem like he was just shoved there like robbie. But, i kind of feel like the silence about his D means it wasn't awful, but nothing to talk about. That I can live with.
  11. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 09:05 PM) My apologies for not engaging in the fantasy world where Owens is going to hit .310/.380/... We can do that with just about every player -- it'sbasically like saying, "if X was good, he'd be a good baseball player!" Yes, obviously if Owens could sustain a .380 OBP the Sox ought to find a place for him. I'd say that about any player who could do that -- I don't see how a statement like that raises the level of discourse on this site. No -- not at all -- but you go ahead and think that if you'd like. I say that, b/c consensus snowballs on this site. And the general consensus is owens ceiling is .270, because of his rookie season he hit around there. His power is awful, his home run was comical, but there seems no thought given to what owens #'s would need to be for him to overcome that power. And his obp in the minors was high. And his average was around what I posted. And his OBP was a good .50 points higher and sometimes more in the minors. And while you say SB don't matter, for owens they do. He can't hit doubles, so he needs to convert his singles into doubles. If he can convert at a 85% percentage and is getting on base at a .360 clip, that helps negate his power. I'd love to have grady sizemore too. I'd really love if Quentin was a CF, or we were confident in Swisher in CF. But we're not. And owens hasn't been handed CF. The notion though, that if he enters the season at CF, we are screwed, is stupid. If he's there, it's because he showed he is gonna produce at a high level.
  12. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 05:01 PM) Yep -- Owens is all of (~)4 months younger than Nick Swisher, to put things into perspective a bit. And no, it's completely unreasonable to think Owens is capable of a .370 or .380 OBP. His minor league OBP was .362, and that's despite the fact that he was old for his level every step of the way. That doesn't even mention his terrible slugging percentage. He's nothing more than a 4th outfielder, but for some reason Sox fans seem to equate 'speedy' and 'slap-hitty' with 'good'. his minor league obp was .08 points off of .370, and his completely incapable of that because that was only because he was older than everyone. Forget that everyone else probably had more baseball experience than jerry owens at every level. It was almost unfair that they let owens play with them at that level, because being several years older than them he was probably like 2 times the size, capable of physically dominating them, like a 14 year old v. a 9 year old. "sox fans" don't seem to equate 'speedy' and 'slap-hitty' with good, they recognize that if owens can get on base at a high level at the top of the order it won't be a tragedy to have him starting. Do I want him to start? No. I already stated that, you are arguing against a ghost you've created in your head, kind of like how you've decided on who owens is already. But if Owens plays at the level I'm speaking of, considering he can play CF, and makes it out of ST the starter, it will not be this end of the world that some hyperbolic sox talkers claim it will be just b/c they've already decided on how owens will produce. His speed and base-stealing abilities would help make up for his utter lack of power if he can get on-base consistently. Once again, I'm not saying that Owens is this all-star CF, I'm saying that if he does play himself into a starter on this team, it is likely because he is hitting at a higher level than has been designated for him by posters on this site.
  13. i'm not so sure he gets ignored, he features a pretty prominent column on the biggest paper in town.

meet the spartans #1 in the box office. good god.
  15. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 10:51 AM) I'm pretty sure everyone would be fine with Owens starting if he could put up a .360-.380 obp. That isn't happening though, ever. I disagree it couldn't ever happen. He showed a good eye through the minors and here in the majors. If he hits .300 and up I see that as a realistic possibility, and I don't think it's so set in stone that he's a .270 hitter like many on the board have given him.
  16. even though ideally I do not want owens starting, b/c i want to see quentin in our OF, I think some people's opinions of him are a little too exaggerated for the amount of time we've seen him. His power is a big issue. But he does have a good eye and makes contact. And while he likely will only be a 4th OF, if this kid can hit over.300 while getting on base another 60 to 80 points above that, with his speed and who's behind him, he would have quite a few teams bidding for his services in my opinion. And I don't think those numbers I mentioned are out of the realm of possibility by any means. edit: and that last statement, to clarify, was my way of saying he could find jobs starting on more than a few mlb teams.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Jan 28, 2008 -> 01:47 AM) Saw The Savages on Friday. A pretty good dark comedy. Laura Linney and PSH were amazing--as could be expected. The script was also really well done. Basically it is a movie about a (rather dysfunctional) set of siblings who must cope with their absentee and abusive father who has slipped into serious dementia and is dying. The ending is surprisingly upbeat for an Indie film. There were some awkward moments, though, in the theater. My friends and I were easily the youngest people there by 35 years. And apparently, this movie is not funny if you are old. So, be warned. interesting. I was pondering going to see this at our independent theatre, I think I'll give it a shot. I'm in a college town so I don't think the age thing will happen. This week they have the diving bell and the butterfly, if I have the title correct, about the editor of French Elle who suffered a massive stroke paralyzing all movement except for his one eye, which could blink. He then writes his whole autobiography by blinking. It sounds fascinating to me, to be trapped in your body like that. I can't wait.
  18. he has a hard time naming a better third baseman than joe crede when healthy? I have a hard time believing that, hell he only has to look some miles north
  19. yes, he looks like a oklst cowboy.
  20. Buerhle's rookie year was so great. In a very painful year to watch barring that 22-7 stretch, he was so excellent. edit: first year as a starter, not rookie
  21. clearly Phil Rogers and his +/- system propelled him to best columnist in Chicago.
  22. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 02:57 PM) Obviously trading Sweeney, Gio and DSL hurts our chances of adding a super starter like Bedard... do you guys think we still have enough in the system to get him? Would you guys trade Danks, Egbert and Uribe for him? WOuld it cost more?? Do you guys even think KW is going after another SP? hahahahaha YES
  23. jon rauch ain't bad, good as advertised? i don't know, but he ain't bad. I'd take him now.
  24. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 10:37 PM) I'm not too worried about the D as long as Moore comes back. Keck, who was their best recruit a year ago, was hurt this year and should step in to a starting spot somewhere on the defense (DE/LB). Temple is almost certainly gone and it's not a huge loss IMO. He had some great games, but struggled with consistency. Derrick Washington is going to be amazing, he showed some serious talent this year and he should be solid enough with the pass heavy offense. In two years with Chase gone and Gabbert stepping in, Washington will be a key part of the transition. see the thing that was amazing about temple is all the sudden the second half of this season he was not only a beast but stopped fumbling. My biggest problems with the rb's my first 2 years was they fumbled, a lot, it seemed. I'm not ready for those giveaways again.
