  1. Listening to a show on 890 here in Arizona and the topic turned to pitching and said that AZ and Josh B would look into one of the Sox's starters. What was not said is what the Sox's might want in return. AZ does have a very strong system so which players might the Sox's be interested in?
  2. During our classes last week we looked into this case from a legal aspect. First conclusion highly unlikely that Oswald would have been convicted. Ruby done a favor for the state of Texas because the murder case even in 1963-64 would have not been a slam dunk. There was sloppy investigation work to go around by the Dallas PD, FBI, and all other law enforcement agencies. I was assigned the role of EADA for the mock hypothetical Oswald trial. Evidence that I used: #1. Shortly after the assassination, a rifle was found partially-hidden between some boxes on the sixth floor and the improvised paper wrapper/bag that covered the rifle was found close to the window from which the shots were fired. #2. The windshield in the Presidential limousine was struck by a bullet fragment on the inside surface of the glass, meaning that these fragments came from behind, and not in front, of the President. #3. The Mannlicher-Carcano 6.5-millimeter Italian rifle - from which the shots were fired - was ordered in the name of A. Hidell and sent to Oswald's P.O. Box in Dallas. Alek was the name Oswald used in the Soviet Union and Alek James Hidell was the name on the false I.D. Oswald was carrying when arrested on the day of the assassination. The FBI found Oswald's palm print on the rifle barrel between the barrel and the stock, which could have been put there only when the rifle was disassembled. #4. Oswald was seen with a paper bag/wrapper in a car on the way to the depository. He said, when he was asked, that it was full of "curtain-rods". He said they were for the rooming-house he was living in (while he was living away from his wife) although his rooming house already had curtains and rods. So not a very strong case Defense: #1. Over 50 witnesses who were present at the shooting heard shots that were fired from in front of the President; from the area of the grassy knoll and triple-underpass #2.The limousine was struck in the windshield, in the chrome above the windshield and the chrome arounda n ashtray on the back of the front seat. The windshield had a definite hole through it (Frank Cormier, Dr. Evalea Glanges, Dallas Police Officer Stavis Ellis, and Dallas Police Officer H.R. Freeman all saw a 'hole.' #3. William Hess of the Ford Motor Corporation said that having worked with glass for 40 years that in his years of experience, the shot that caused the hole came from the front. #4. It is impossible for Oswald's rifle, the Mannilicher-Carcano (Hurt), to be fired more than once in less than 2.3 seconds (Thompson). According to the Zapruder film, for the first two shots to be fired by Oswald, they would have to be fired in rapid succession (Thompson). Top rifle experts of the FBI were incapable of making the rifle fire two shots in the 2.3-second time frame. #5. Death Certificate located the bullet at the third thoracic vertebra which is too low to have exited his throat. Moreover, the bullet was traveling downward, since the shooter was by a sixth floor window. The autopsy cover sheet had a diagram of a body showing this same low placement at the third thoracic vertebra. The hole in back of Kennedy's shirt also shows the same place where the bullet hit, as does Kennedy's jacket that shows where the bullet hit. Nevertheless, the single bullet theory requires the bullet to move upward when it passed through Kennedy and came out of his throat. #6. Sloppy Investigation, Dallas police detectives failed to take any notes or taping of the interrogation only using there memory only. Dallas Police also failed to keep the body in Dallas to complete the autopsy which under Texas law all homicides must have an autopsy completed in Texas. With the body being moved it allows the entire procedure to be questioned. While none of these things by no means clears Oswald it does provide reasonable doubt. Which made my task much tougher. Personally If I was in charge if this case I would have went after Oswald only for the Murder of Officer Tippit that case was very strong 7 witnesses seen him shoot the officer and a dozen more seen him leave and when arrested Oswald had a .38 on him it was also the murder weapon with GSR on his hands.
  3. JFK anniversary Been to Deadly Plaza once it has an odd feel to it. I bet it was a circus around there today.
  4. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 07:05 PM) Young did have a significant weakness when he was traded, his strikeout rate. He's since corrected that though. He stopped swinging at those 0-2 breaking pitches in the dirt. Chris also cut down on his swing when behind in the counts which he struggled with last year. Now his K/BB rate is 52/71.
  5. Tucson is still in a uproar over this. The Pima County supervisor is holding a big rally/protest tomorrow at Tucson Electric Park over this. A state rep is pleading with the governor to help draft a bill that would probit the Sports commishion from using funds to lure teams from other Arizona Cities. Tucson link This could get interseting
  6. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) With all of the political discussion, I'd like to know if you have any ideas for making soxtalk.com a more exciting and engaging place? thanks in advance. Sorry post was buried, I think Soxtalk already is the best Sox's board bar none. It is all about keeping our great posters, they make the board great. Our moderating team also does a great job keeping the board civil. These contests like we are doing now are great and maybe we could do more of these types of contests during the year that is my suggestion. It is hard to improve on a site that is already world class.
  7. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 08:19 PM) Thanks knightni!!! You don't like Sally
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:28 AM) This simply doesn't work. The total amount spent in all earmarks in 2005 was $47 billion dollars, and that includes all of them, including I believe many projects that are actually worthy of funding. While this money would be useful if it were saved in the lockbox where it should be, it is no where near enough to significantly increase funding for Social Security. It's not even close to enough money just to pay for the White House's proposed Social Security private accounts plan. So the question deserves to be asked again...more specifically than just saying "cutting pork", give us examples of where you're going to cut spending, and how those spending cuts are enough to offset the price tag, which would certainly be in the $100's of billions per year, of lowering the retirement age or increasing benefits. Good points, What I should have added was cuts in wasteful spending overall not just pork. Looking at figures if we allow non-defense, non-homeland security discretionary spending to grow with inflation. In one year we can save 26.7B the amount increases to 436.5B over 5 years. 2. Freeze non-defense, non-homeland security discretionary spending. One year savings would be 36.2B and 607B over 5 years. 3. Freeze discretionary spending. One year savings would be 47.9B and a 5 year savings of 817.3B These are just a few of the wasteful lavish spending programs in Washington just these 3 programs alone will save 110 Billion in the first year.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 11:04 AM) So, history has shown us that when education is left to the states, the funding for education and most of the control over education has fallen to local districts. This has had the fortunate/unfortunate side effect, however you choose to view it, of concentrating the good schools and good teachers into the districts with the highest amounts of income, as they can afford to pay better salaries and afford better equipment, while the schools for the lowest-income areas tend to be much worse funded and much more poorly maintained. Do you consider this to be an adequate situation, and if not, what would you do to address it? No, everyone deserves a proper education. I would use the independent commission to overview all of the schools strengths and weakness. The commission should set up a list of recommendations for each public school and a time table for these recommendations to be completed. I would also like to see a program which was passed here in Arizona which was a tax on tobacco products that will be placed in special a education fund. The fund can be accessed by the commission.
  10. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) In your platform you mentioned increased spending for social security, are you proposing adding benefits or increasing the existings ones, and how will those be funded? I would like to increase our current benefits for family and early retirement. The money would come from the cuts made in excessive pork barrel legislation.
  11. QUOTE(Soxy @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) With recent standardized test scores showing that students in urban areas are out performed by their peers and the opinion that US students are falling behind in science, what do you think the role of federal government should be in support of strengthening our country's (obvious) floundering in teaching science? Do you support increasing funding to national organizations (Like the National Science Foundation and the National Instutute of Health) or do you believe this is a state's issue? If it is a state's issue, how would you recommend they address this issue? I think this is a state issue. I would like to see the states set up a committee (for all area's of study for that matter) that ensure public school curriculum, textbooks and statewide tests represent the state of the art in science education. It is something like we have here in Arizona. I would like the independent commission to Inform and empower students, parents, educators and other concerned citizens to participate effectively in administrative, legislative and regulatory processes to improve science education in the state.
  12. I will try and answer to the best of my ability.
  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) Soooo heading back to Glendale in 08 or 09 then. I'm glad that this has been discussed a bit over the past year or 2, and the wheels are finally in motion for this to occur. I guess it is not a done deal yet but if I were on the commission and you have a deal where one city brings in 2 teams signed committed the works the teams happen to be the 2 highest supported teams other than the Dbacks in the valley. The other deal has only one team the Indians and no way will the Sox's share with the Indians and there doesn't seem to be any other teams looking to move to AZ. So basically one city wants a stadium that will have 2 very popular teams bringing in revenue, the other city wants the same amount of money for the same type of stadium but will only have one team bringing in revenue.
  14. Take the ? out of the sox's part they have signed a tentative deal to play in Glendale along with the LA Dodgers. Now all that needs to happen is to get the grant which should be easy considering the Glendale officer is much better for the city and the State. http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbac...le15-ON-CP.html
  15. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 08:13 PM) So basically, if Tucson and the D-Backs can find another team to share TEP during ST with the D-Backs, the White Sox will probably be off to Glendale right? Sounds like right now it's probably more in favor of happening anyways. From the way I understood it today the city would have to approve which team comes in. Also the Maricopa commission most likely will only fund one stadium (I would say Glendale's has much more upside).
  16. I am really bad at this kind of stuff is there anyone who could help me with a Election sig? Thanks Tom (Bham)
  17. Tucson is not happy about this at all and I think Governor Napolitano might end up vetoing this measure because the Arizona sports commision is meant to get extra sporting money from the other states not from cities inside the Arizona. And Pima county also is her biggest supporter which doesn't hurt. http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/156117
  18. QUOTE(Wanne @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) I would be on Cloud 9!!! I live in Glendale...about 10 minutes from Peoria Sports Complex...and am only about 15-20 from the new football stadium. In a few years...that area around the football stadium will be nice with all the amenities they're putting in. This would ROCK! Not that far a drive to Tucson...just boring as s***. Of course it takes you 40 minutes to get out of town from the NW Valley...and that's with light traffic. Actually looking at the map and the story...it's actually land IN Phoenix that's owned by the city of Glendale. Yeah I read that today. 107th and Camelback
  19. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:39 PM) I know about double jeopardy, but is there ANY chance that if there's some sort of slip of the tongue, if he could be re-tried? If not, he might as well just come out and say it, move to some foreign country, like Maine, and drop out of existence. No he can't be re-tried for the Murders.
  20. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 07:45 PM) It's about 20-30mins North-West of downtown Phoenix, so probably about 2 and a half hours northwest of Tucson I'd say. It's close to 2 hours away it is 130 miles. Last trip took me 1 hour 48 mins I took I-10 to the 101. This stadium would be on the very edge of Phoenix and Glendale at 107th and Camelback.
  21. I am by all accounts a moderate democrat and I am strong believer in protecting the rights given to us in the United States Constitution. 22. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) If Florida is monitoring Anderson, that's a good indication as any he shouldn't be traded. I notice how the article mentions Chris Young as well..... Josh Byrnes was quoted as CY being untouchable. Even in a D-Train Deal
  23. Sounds interseting, Glendale needs 2 teams to get the deal approved it looks like LA part is almost done and the Sox are the other team. If so Sox would have to bring another quality team to replace them in Tucson Sox coming to Glendale?
  24. QUOTE(Reddy @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 09:54 AM) VP maybe... but i think edwards still has to be the favorite at this point for the pres. nomination. and i'm not sure if obama would do it, but an Edwards Obama ticket would be near unbeatable Yes it would be that would be a very nice ticket. Other ideas should be looking at our Governor's around the country. It seems to be a trend toward governors as Presidents. Clinton, Kerry, Gore would not be a good choice.
  25. QUOTE(bmags @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) the dems did need a candi with exec experience. Someone on the state level though.
