  1. Here is an article from ESPN.com...not sure if this was already posted. Basically it breaks down how good we look for the future. I also saw that ESPN ranks Josh Fields as the 4th best minor leaguer. Linky
  2. Should be a great crowd. I could only get single tickets online. So it should be a sellout...with maybe some people standing.
  3. How about cheering for them to bring back the 1908 beer prices. Now that is something to cheer for.
  4. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 18, 2006 -> 10:44 AM) I would say we will outnumber cubs fans at our place in a much bigger ratio than in previous years. The whole lower bowl is almost all season ticket holders. No doubt. How nice is that going to be. And I'm only chanting for the beer man to move his ass... And I have noticed a much better breed of fan this year...thanks to the season ticket sales. The games have been great...and should be this weekend as well.
  5. QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ May 17, 2006 -> 12:54 PM) I wasn't aware of the gambling problem in baseball at the time either. Excellent thread. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when the action begins for Game 1. Arnold Rothstein, the supposed mastermind behind it all, is at a gambling parlor, as the game is being played. The gambling parlor gets the results via telegraph, and then relays it to the crowd. They have a whole scoreboard up, which tells the 'story' of the game. So when a guy gets on base, they move a little runner to first, and narrate the game. It was cool. I will say this, it would be a very stressful way to gamble. QUOTE(SnB @ May 17, 2006 -> 01:16 PM) This era really seems interesting to me, maybe it's because I don't know a whole lot though. I really should pick up some books on it, anyone have any reccomendations? Eight Men Out is the book to read. It is regarded as the best book on the subject.
  6. QUOTE(Beltin @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) I have read that on numerous occassions as well. It is almost too perfect a line to be true anyway. The guy to feel sorriest for is Buck Weaver. He never took any money nor was involved in the fix. His only crime was that he heard about it and did not rat on his teamates. Landis didn't care and banned him anyway. I heard he died a pauper walking the streets of Chicago still trying to clear his name. I think I heard he wrote to the commissioner every year, trying to get his name cleared, because he never took a dime. And he of course was always denied.
  7. See the movie...its a good watch. I don't believe its completely accurate. I've heard that the whole 'Say It Ain't So Joe' was never really said by a little boy. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:51 AM) I'm saying "Poor" because I'm almost positive even without evidence that there were many other players outside of the White Sox organization doing the exact same thing. Maybe it wasn't as high stakes as the World Series but I'm assuming there were others aswell. Yeah, it was a widespread problem, and basically 8 guys took the fall for all of baseball.
  8. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ May 17, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) Poor Shoeless Joe. I wonder how often games were being thrown back then anyways. I don't know about 'Poor Shoeless Joe'. He conspired with men about fixing baseball games. Whether he gave his all isn't really the point. The big problem was the Sox players were some of the best, and they were paid by Comiskey as if they were some of the worst. Supposedly the season before, Eddie Cicotte came within 1 win of a $10,000 bonus, but Comiskey had him benched at times, to make sure he didn't get the bonus. So the owners were part of the problem when it came to gambling.
  9. If I remember correct, from the Book Eight Men out, the next season, the Cubs were going to throw a game, and someone called the league, and the starting pitcher was pulled, and this helped spark the pursuit of Shoeless Joe and the other 7 men. The feeling was that an example needed to be made, to clean up baseball. Throwing games was supposedly a regular occurence.

    Mono....

QUOTE(Brian @ May 16, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) I thought I had mono for an entire year once, just turned out I was just really bored. I forgot what movie that was from...what is it?

  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 15, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) I got a funny feeling about this weekend. This has classic over confident vs nothing to lose written all over it. I really hope this series does not wake up the Cubs, giving them the movitation they are severely lacking right now. I don't like this situation...if we win, we are supposed to...if we lose, its a joke. However, it will be plenty sweet if we sweep them. :fthecubs
  13. I always fall for the Sox killers. It seems like every game he steals a homerun from us.
  14. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 15, 2006 -> 02:02 PM) I just remember hearing/reading something this week that AJ was on the phone with Aaron, and Aaron told AJ that the padding was in some back room waiting to be put up. I found it: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-baseball-print I heard that the padding just arrived, and they were waiting for the Phillies road trip before putting it up. Bad timing.
  15. His nose is probably jello under that nose brace. Looks good on you though!
  16. QUOTE(G&T @ May 15, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) The Yankees will be desperate to get him and will probably pay most of his salary. Maybe I'm over-generalizing the Yankees approach to trades but I doubt I'm too far off. So, they get him and move DAmon to left, or something along those lines? I guess I could see that. As for us getting Hunter, I was thinking more for this year, and not long term. I still like BA, just want to see that average get up there and to see him continue more rallies. Maybe by the end of this year, my concerns will be gone. I hope so.
  17. Not sure if this has been discussed, but if Anderson's bat continues to stay under .200, and the Twins are willing to deal, I would love to see Hunter roaming our outfield. Obviously his glove is unreal...but he is also a pretty decent hitter, and we know he knows how to run over a cather. Ouch! Should we pursue him and what do you think he would cost us?
  18. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ May 15, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) What a sick f***. He just won't go away. If I was him, I'd try and stay away from attention. Thank you. Wow, I didn't think that was bad. Just saying OJ should get what he deserves.
  19. QUOTE(samclemens @ May 13, 2006 -> 02:33 PM) can someone explain what scientology is even about Its about being crazy, weird, odd, etc. See Tom and Katie. It was started by a science fiction writer. The more I read about these two nuts, the more I think they are two nuts.

  21. I say if Brian continues to struggle with the bat, Kenny should look to get his hands on Torii Hunter, come the trade deadline. Then we could look to sign him for 3-4 years. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing what Brian can do, but Torii will probably be available come July. The Twins don't have the horses this year, and probably won't want to pay him.
  22. QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 10, 2006 -> 10:47 AM) I know Jas wants to see these as well as a few other posters who I mentioned it to so here is the link: http://community.webshots.com/user/aboz56 I've also got my pictures from the ALCS in 2005 up there and I'm going to try and add some other Sox pictures today. To see the Anaheim pics from this year just click on the album link. My personal favorite is the picture of AJ just starring at the camera. Thanks boz What do the Angels charge for the screened in area behind home? That looks pretty cool.

  24. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 28, 2006 -> 09:00 AM) The first EP and Out Of The Cellar are great albums. Invasion Of Your Privacy had a great cover, and that was it. They had their songs here and there after OOTC, but that was it. I agree to a point. I was a kid when I listened to this stuff...if it came out now, I would probably think it sucked.
  25. Nuke, I would have to go with Ratt. As much as I was into the harder stuff, I still enjoyed some of the hair and makeup bands. And Ratt was the best of those, for me. Plus they had lots of hot chicks on their record albums.
