The official "Greg Oden vs. Kevin Durant thread
SleepyWhiteSox replied to Steve9347's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Feb 9, 2007 -> 02:23 PM) Basically. When talking about the Celtics. I'd rate Jefferson, Green, and Allen as great young talents. Gomes, Rondo, West, and Perkins as good talents who haven't been able to show consistency. Problem is you're probably all alone on those ratings... -
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 9, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) Bruce still should have had a backup plan though, it was obvious Gordon was gone for a while, and Darquavis Tucker could have been had. Maybe, but probably not. I commend Coach Wainwright on his ability to recruit so far and how he's gone about forming and building relationships to do so. He did well in continuing that Michigan pipeline to get Dar Tucker and the Boys to Men relationship for Mac Koshwal and possibly Leon Freeman in the near future.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Feb 9, 2007 -> 12:17 AM) You're just being ignorant if you disagree. The Bulls have good young players, just not as many that could be used as trade bait, unless of course you want to disrupt the whole outlook of that team. But good one. You remind me of John Amaechi. So you're calling me ignorant and gay...Nice, good job of staying classy... No need to resort to silly name-calling just because you're flat-out wrong and too immature to realize it. -

US Defeats Mexico 2-0

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 03:48 PM) They said during the telecast that a lot of Mexican-Americans will wear their Mexican gear on top and their American gear under and switch to the American gear if the US is winning. How loyal is that? I heard that but didn't believe it. Never seen or heard of that at all. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) I dont know. Here is another thought. What is worse. The casual fan that roots for their country for a show of nationalistic pride. Or someone that was born here, and roots for someone else which is obviously what I see when we watch a US game in America. I never see the red white and blue outnumbering the opponent. So did an army of people here on Visa's or were born in other countries just happen to show up. Maybe. Or is it children of immigrants who seem to love it here, except for when the teams play. I was born in Ireland. However if the US were to play the Irish I would wear my red white and blue and root for the Americans to beat Ireland. This is the only country I have known. I am an American citizen. Its somewhere that I have been since I was one years old. Dont get me wrong if Ireland is playing anyonje else, I root for the Irish. I own a Duff and Keane jersey. But there are plenty of people in this country that seem to identify with another country, even thought they have never been there for most accounts and forget why we all came here in the first place. My father used to get mad at me when people would ask what I was and would say Irish. He told me, you are an American. I think part of that is many of us will root for the team our dad rooted for, taught us to root for, and watched as we were growing up. When Mexico plays here in Chicago, you're going to see a lot of green. When Poland plays here, you're going to see a lot of red. 1st and 2nd generation Americans still have connections to their country of heritage, and there's still that sense of pride to be of that particular heritage. Another factor is that the sport is secondary in this country. There isn't the same history or passion for it that other national teams get. Not much to get excited about. I bet a lot of those same Americans who prefer rooting for another country in soccer still have a favorite NFL, MLB, NBA, and/or college team. And also, US soccer is kinda bland and boring. Again, not a whole lot to get excited about. I'm not ashamed to say that I'd rather watch Brazil or Italy play... I consider myself patriotic and luv my country but don't necessarily feel unpatriotic about not really fully supporting the soccer team. It's just a sport and I can kinda equate it to those who prefer to support teams outside of their city or colleges that they didn't attend because maybe they like that particular style of play better or for whatever other reasons... -

2007 Fantasy Baseball Sign Up

Wow, already?? I was in a league last year but can't recall. I prefer head-to-head. Baseball is my weakest fantasy sport and I'm not extremely experienced but do set my lineups and stay active. I prefer not to be a commisioner. -

My game notes: - Mexico's new adidas jerseys were terrible...I hate how adidas is taking the nike college cookie-cutter approach of giving all their teams the same design... - bruce arena hurts my ears... - Both teams played pretty bad most of the game. Same recent formula and result in the end, though. - Stupid, ugly move at the end...wynalda made a nice comment about the goalie losing his dad before the World Cup and him coming out and playing well, and then he goes and does something stupid like that... - Boring game overall. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 31, 2007 -> 06:40 PM) The road game at DePaul is going to be a toughie, even though I didn't list it. I know the DePaul season hasn't been 'ideal', but I still think they're capable of beating anyone in this conference if they play to their potential on any given night. Are you gonna be at that February (13th? 14th? It's a Wednesday game, I know that) game? Nope, I won't. Can't really make it to weekday games nor do I want to witness the potential garbage play in person. The team is too maddening to watch. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 31, 2007 -> 10:11 PM) DePaul turns a 21 point 2nd half lead into a mere 3 points at the 1 minute mark of the game, but holds off UConn 66-58 behind 26 points from, of all people, Draelon Burns. We were beyond awful to start off the game, only scoring about 10 points in about the first 13 minutes...luckily uconn is really, really down this year...came out very strong in the 2nd half and almost gave it away, of course, at the end... burns can score. Averaged in double figures last year. We could use more of that with sammy deciding to take conference play off and not show up much this season. -

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jan 31, 2007 -> 11:41 PM) It's REALLY early to say whether they are wrong or not. Right now Durant appears to be better, but that's not what they're worried about. If 10 years from now Durant is basically McGrady and Oden is basically Duncan, the big guy is going to win out. It doesn't really matter if they're wrong or not, they have the ultimate say on who goes #1, which is the whole argument. Yes, Durant can easily be the better player, just like Jordan was better than Olajuwon, but that doesn't change who went #1 in the draft. That's an entirely different argument. Most GM's are going to take the guy who could be the next great center because those guys are in pretty short supply, especially a guy that is already as good defensively as Oden. Great centers win you championships...Jordan was an anomaly... -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 31, 2007 -> 02:58 PM) Wow -- Marquette a #3 in that latest Bracketology. There's still a lot of time left in BE play, though -- eight more games, with some real toughies at Georgetown, along with Pitt coming to the BC. I hate you... -
Immediate family gets a pass, I'd say, considering the news and the fact that it wasn't too too late, although I think how early one works should be a bit of a factor. My dad has started his work from 2-3 am for many, many years so any calls after 9 have always been very much frowned upon at our house. How close the sisters are should probably be a factor too..
