QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 10:33 AM) I don't see how anyone here culd criticize Mariotti for changing his opinion on how the team will do in the playoffs based on how they are playing at the moment. Everyone does that here and we aren't two faced, trying to cover our butts. lol... There's a few other valid reasons for disliking mariotti before I even begin to get into the way he flip-flops...

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 10:03 AM) Ok then, so let's just extremely overpay for say a Raul Ibanez by giving up Chris Young and Brandon McCarthy. The fact is, the market DICTATED that there would be hardly any trades this year. Any other season, you know KW would have made a move, he's proven that time and time again with the Garcia trade, the Everett trade etc. Teams that don't have winning records aren't going to give away their best players just because they may be overpaid. They want to win now too, they're sick of losing. Great post. How can anyone knowledgeably say KW should be fired when he practically built a new team this year, which has exceeded expectations? How can you call him gun-shy when he has previously made plenty of trades to show he isn't afraid to take chances?

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:47 AM) And I'm sure our hitters will teach themselves to hit in the following weeks. The irony would be if our hitters did great in the postseason and our pitchers choked. How about just hitting like they did at the start of the season?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) Is that statement actually implying Robinson is good? Yeah...just not at being a WR. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:43 AM) We could of gotten better, however. But we didnt. So now we have to hope our hitting gets their act together in this next month. Or the playoffs will be an issue. I honestly don't think it was because of lack of effort, and I do think Kenny was ready to overpay.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) So, why have they played better as the season progressed and we've played worse? The players they already had started playing better, not because of their marginal additions. Same with us. No more timely hitting=more losses.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:35 AM) Don't forget Small, who has also been great for them. Jenks >>> small

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 09:26 AM) Chacon has pitched pretty well for them up to this point. My point was, that a rotation of Johnson, Mussina, Chacon, ?, ? is not as good as Johnson, Mussina, Brown, Wright, Pavano, which is the rotation they had obviously hoped for all season. As far as how were playing, yeah, we had a bad month. But I don't think one bad month overshadows the fact that we had the best record in baseball for 4 straight months. Even without Frank, this offense is still capable, and I stress capable, of being good enough as long as the pitching and defense are up to par. Apparently picking up Graffanino makes up for the injuries to Foulke, Schilling, and Wade Miller and adding a few decent Chacon starts makes up for Pavano and Wright being hurt, along with both teams having subpar bullpens. Yeah, they got sooo much better. :rolly

QUOTE(The Critic @ Sep 1, 2005 -> 07:07 AM) He's not incorrect, but this article just falls in line with what Mariotti does. He just writes enough articles on both sides of a topic so that he appear to be "right" no matter what happens. As a columnist, he's supposed to write about what's going on, but the annoying thing about him is that he over-reacts with a tinge of anger in his tone, as if he cares what happens to any Chicago team. He clearly doesn't care, except I will suggest that he might enjoy when teams lose because he gets to trot out his own stupid nicknames and smarmy attitude. Hard to treat a winning team that way. Thank you. I'm glad there are others who don't fall for the mariotti bulls***. This column was as expected, in my opinion: blatant shots at Sox players and other members of the organization, subtle shots at the fans. It sounded as sports-unintelligent as I've come to expect from him.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 11:09 PM) Geoff Blum has a hit or more in 9 of his last 12 games. Why so much hate for this man from everyone? He's just about the least of our problems. I was thinking the same thing...I looked at his numbers and they haven't been as bad as the hate he gets... I mean, we have high expectations for someone playing in place of crede, especially at the plate???

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) Where is everybody getting ripped for being negative? How come I just don't see it? Fathom has managed to stick around and he at times is the most negative fan you're going to come across. Sometimes people go over the top with their negativity and are called on it, then claim they're getting flamed or blasted. I just don't see it. Thank you. GREAT post. Nobody has ever bit their tongue when being either negative or positive. If you can make a statement and factually back it up, you'll have no problems. It's only those that are overly-negative or overly-positive with very little logical proof to base it on who are blasted, and rightfully so. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 10:20 PM) Bears fans remind me of Cubs fans, only less annoying. Everyone was saying if no one got hurt this would be the Bears year. Now, even without Grossman, the Bears can win the division? Or even win 10 games? I'm a Bears fan and I don't think that. We aren't winning the division nor will we win 10 games, but we won't be the worst team in the NFL as stated by these rankings.

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:10 PM) Ok this dismal and s***ty month of August is behind us. Let's get behind this team. I am sick of reading this boo hoo crap. This division is ours for taking. Get behind this team and root for our boys.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) Perhaps I'll take a stab at it. Sanders has an ERA of 3.02 and has been a key lefty out of the bullpen in Charlotte. Diaz has an ERA of 4.95 and has been very inconsistent this year. Munoz has really struggled lately, including tonight. Perhaps they feel Casanova is a better defensive catcher than Burke?? Burke only played 46 of his 96 games this year at catcher, so it seems obvious to me they don't really see him as a catcher, but more as a utility player that can catch. Note he played most of those games at catcher while Casanova was hurt. Then again, perhaps it is simply because Casanova is hitting .314 with 7 HR and 18 RBI in the month of August while Burke is hitting .244? While I don't always agree with Sox personnel decisions, why is it so necessary to criticize decisions made with input from coaches who see these players daily? I personally don't have a feel for Casanova, but I do know that Sanders is tough against lefties, as evidenced by his 2.45 ERA and .216 BA against them. Thanks a lot. I knew someone could put it together like that to further clarify the moves.

QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:01 PM) GAME OVER: Cleveland loses to the Tigers 4-3. The Sox have a 7 game lead. We are NOT blowing a 7 game lead this late in the season...
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:03 PM) Yep, they all count as a W or L in the standings. There have been a lot of "if this, then this" that have happened for the Sox. For the most part, it's all been positive. We could easily be like 3-10 vs KC this year....but no one mentions something like that. We coulda been undefeated this season if...

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) KG was lobbying hardcore for Finley to Minnesota. Thanx. But at Finley's age, you go where you are most likely to win a ring.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:43 PM) So what Sanders ahead of Diaz and Munoz and Casanova ahead of Burke? Ugh. Can those that follow the minors give any sort of valid and/or logical reasoning for these moves?
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 08:46 PM) Yet another reason for KG to get out of Minny. Miami prob would hav had him, if they would actually be able to play him from that logjam. Can I ask how you brought about KG into this thread?

QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) How is this mentality acceptable in the city of Chicago? How is it acceptable to say "well, that's just the way things are, we can't afford it..." Bulls***. I'm so sick of feeling like a second tier baseball team because our ownership group refuses to spend more than 80 million dollars. It's f***ing horses***. Me too. I wouldn't mind adding without giving up so much talent. QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) Meanwhile, the fans keep squinting trying to make Scott Podsednik look like Alex Rodriguez. No matter how hard you look, they're not even in the same f***ing atmosphere. And yeah, I hate A-Rod too for what it's worth. But he's a damn good baseball player, and he's a damn better hitter than anyone we got. But that was a horrible comparison, in my opinion...
