  1. QUOTE (gosoxgo2005 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 12:04 PM) This, and his mechanics aren't really that good. He gets poor extension, his delivery isn't all too repeatable, and doesn't stay on top of the baseball well. All of that combined will equate to a lack of command. Rodon literally will lose an entire side of the plate, hitters know it because its easy to scout. Once you cut down strikes on one side its easy to hit.
  2. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) What if the cop's bullets killed the kid in the backseat. I can't believe how f***ing reckless that guy was. "f***, f***, f***, I TOLD HIM NOT TO MOVE! I TOLD HIM NOT TO MOVE!" amateur Seriously, I'm surprised they didnt go right through that seat. He probably would have claimed the kid made a move towards her backpack
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 03:13 PM) Chicago citizens need to do everything possible to make sure the citizen review board changes happen. It's on us. Good luck. Although I am not all that fond of them, I definitely prefer seeing the Oak Park police cruisers around
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:55 PM) I feel like if we were actually able to study police violence we'd end up with a lot of quick wins around scheduling and process that could dramatically reduce things without even tackling the more difficult training out prejudice issues. But, good luck with that. We'll get more blue lives matter laws. s***, can you imagine the chicago PD going through sweeping changes like that? No chance.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:39 PM) College educated are also the ones who are more likely to have better options than policing. And there's the rub
  6. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:17 PM) Not sure (1) this is true, but more importantly (2) whether being intelligent has anything to do with it. Most of these cops committing these acts aren't young and green. They seem to be to be older cops who have grown intolerant/impatient with the people they are serving. They're wrongly ASSUMING that something bad is about to happen or they get ANGRY far too quickly about how the situation is progressing. Statistics prove that college educated officers are less likely to use force than the ones that do not have that education. So there is some correlation there. Policing is almost like social work these days, and lack of patience and understanding is definitely not a desirable trait for sure.
  7. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) I think a big problem is that we have a lot of ex-vets who go into law enforcement. And the way the government has handed down gear and trained local and state police departments, its inevitable that they just take on a military style form of justice. I mean, we are hiring a lot of under educated people (by some measure), throwing them out into the field with the utmost authority and deadly weapons, thats not a great formula.
  8. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:37 PM) Let's get rid of gang related violence in both countries. Where does that roughly leave both in terms of violence? bring us down to about 2 killings a week in chicago.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:17 PM) We're getting on a bit of a tangent here, but I'd imagine most Americans' exposure to news from Mexico (including my own) is just the latest sensationalist crime/murder/cartel bulls*** story and little else. Similar to how I'd imagine most of this country hears about Chicago based on the several times I've been asked "so do you carry a gun when you go to the city?" while traveling to other parts of the country for work. I didnt know about the top 30 cities or so in mexico, shows what I've been exposed to.
  10. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:08 PM) Queretaro is actually one of the biggest cities in Mexico and has a pretty low crime rate, comparable to first world nations. It says its the 22nd largest, and over 2 million, thats crazy.
  11. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:06 PM) Chicago happens to have a violent gang problem that accounts for 95% of the violent crime (likely more than 95%, but I'm being generous). Apples to Apples, please. I can easily say it depends on where you live in the US, too... Also, I didn't "attack your opinion", I attacked your "facts"...you cannot have an opinion on which is more dangerous as data exist to back that up. Mexico is either safer than the US, or it isn't...this isn't an opinion. And, as the facts show, it isn't safer in any regard. But man their cities are so much more populated than the US, its crazy. I cant believe I never knew that was so across the board like that.
  12. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 01:01 PM) It depends on where you live, I GUARANTEE you that Chicago has a much higher murder rate than Queretaro, which is where I and my family live. I don't know why you guys get your panties in a bunch for me saying something THAT I FEEL. I feel safer in Queretaro than I do in San Antonio. Anyways, I don't want to make this about me but I have no idea why Y2HH attacked me for an opinion I posted. We are free to post opinions are we? Damn, thats a pretty big city Ive never heard of, and 22nd in the country in population? s***.
  13. Man, are we hiring the wrong police officers? Less than half have college degrees and that half is less likely to use force. Do we need to up the requirements to be an officer?
  14. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 09:01 AM) Here's the thing that irks me about America. Americans boasts about this being the greatest country on the planet. That's fine and dandy but that's a f***ing reality if you're a white person. I think it's easy to get caught up in this s*** doesn't happen all the time which has some merit. That being said, as a black male with no criminal record and I still have utter fear when I see cops. Most black males feel similarly because you never know when you might catch one on a bad day and end up six feet under. This is reality for a black male in America. So yeah it might not happen often but if it happens to you, it won't matter. If you could live a day in black man's shoes, you might have a different perspective. I always feel like I have emasculate myself so that I don't scare the s*** of white people. This is exhausting but it is what it is. You probably don't get people clutching their purses when you get within a certain vicinity of them. You don't have people see you as a dangerous human being even though you'd never hurt a fly. If I ever have decide to have kids, it'll be tough to have to explain to them why they could be in danger due to the color of their skin. We've come a long way in certain aspects and havent moved an inch in others.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 09:57 AM) Tasers are also pretty ineffective as they're a one and done. If you miss, or the prongs don't penetrate, they're effectively useless, and in situations where the person is nervous, odds are they'll miss. If they put some R&D into tasers, maybe this wouldn't be an issue...but there isn't much money in that, I'd assume...or we'd have some advanced tasers. What ever happened to that military grade mace?
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 08:47 AM) I'm glad that police murder is getting more attention if it means police will commit and cover up fewer murders going forward. I don't particularly care if it "represents" "America" or the ratio of good/bad going on in America, this is still a s***ty and horrible and too frequent thing. Agreed. Police officers need to be held to a higher standard and you should know that going in. It cannot be a job for people that are looking to be in a position of power or just looking for a job. We cannot hire just anyone to protect and serve the community.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 08:38 AM) as bmags pointed out, there's no reliable statistics one way or the other on this. Police departments don't always track this and don't track it in the same way. If they can, they will hide it. Clearly, at least where we live, people shoot other people a lot more frequently than cops do.
  18. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 08:32 AM) So sad. That video is just the epitome of america today. This type of thing has been happening for decades, the only thing different is now we can simulcast it happening.
  19. I like keeping him as a starter to work on his command and overall rhythm. He has been showing some real signs of promise down there, leave him be unless somehow we are in real contention. Burdi on the other hand, keep rushing him up.
  20. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 08:12 AM) You guys are white. It must be lovely to be able to tell a cop this and not get blown away. Absolutely an issue. Race among other factors have a definite effect on how you are treated by police officers, especially when carrying. General appearance of you, your vehicle, your behavior while driving and pulled over are all major factors in how officers respond.
  21. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 07:36 AM) My CC instructor told us best way to not escalate things with a cop is to hand them your CC license along with your normal one... Saying I have a gun can trigger someone into being trigger happy. Mine said something similar but in a different way. Identify yourself as a lawful CC permit holder and then when asked disclose if you have it on you and where it is all while not moving. Do not reach, do not try to show.
  22. In concealed carry class the instructor taught us to make sure we identified ourselves as possessing a weapon to officers and awaiting their orders. It seems he at least did some of that. Identifying yourself as a lawful carrier is supposed to put the officer at ease.
  23. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 06:35 AM) It's the 24/7 in your face news cycle. Without bothering to research this statement, I'd be willing to bet these types of incidents are way down from their peak, but you wouldn't know it based on the endless bombardment of these stories. It's a lot harder to cover up when people can live stream the aftermath or the actual shooting. Police have been shooting and harming people for as long as they've existed. Putting people in a position of power over others is a pretty well known psychology experiment and its changes people.
  24. Without social media these killings have been going on for decades. Nothing is "crumbling" you are just able to hear and see them actually happen now.
  25. This is obviously a bridge season to the big spending offseason. I'd like to see if Valentine can be a deep threat on this team but I still think they need some shooters as role players moving forward.
