  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:37 PM) I would prefer the Sox to not trade for Abreu and remain at least somewhat financially flexible during the season if holes need to be filled. Picking up Abreu's contract not only busts the budget, but pretty much would paralyze KW if he wanted to make an in-season move that would be taking on money. And would almost guarantee Mark Buehrle pitching for the St Louis Cards in the future.
  2. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) Rock...I have forgotten more than you'll EVER know. I can guarantee you that. I am not advocating putting the Sox in debt...let's just use up more of the PROFITS to give us the best chance of defending our crown. Its a good thing you edited your post, because at least we can skip over your claim to senility. Seconly, it has already been posted that they have increased the payroll to accomodate the profits. In fact they have made this a rule for the last several years, and thats why our payroll went up over 30 million dollars.
  3. Heres the basics Steve. Any team in the MLB can buy any player. Its possible for them all to go into debt and buy every player they want. Is it a smart move? No. Is it possible, yes. Of course for the next ten years they will be putting a last place team on the field in order to cut costs and pay back the deficit cause by their bad business decision. The White Sox simply will not do this. Our budget is already topped off. You should consider the fact that we wont add more payroll, and try and find a more creative way to add Abreu as an argument. Otherwise you are just appearing to know nothing about business basics, and the operations of a baseball team.
  4. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:26 PM) There is a report going around that there is a blizzard in Iraq, now that you mention it Some people dont know when to stop.
  5. Yet another pitcher for their simulated rotation. Proving once again, the cubs have a volume discount on MRI's.
  6. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:59 PM) No one's been schooled yet! The fact that you dont know it yet speaks volumes. I wouldnt argue chemistry because I know nothing about it. This is the approach you should take in this matter.
  7. QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 03:12 PM) So next year will probably be one of our most profitable years ever in terms of revenue meaning that the FOLLOWING year (2007) is when the "re-investment" is due according to Forbes. If 2007 is when we'd take the bulk of the hit for an Abreu contract, it looks like it lines up directly with the year that we should be able to afford the most salary. (Be back later to continue this engaging discussion ) Yes, just about the year when we owe our young starting pitching their new deals. Abreu or Mark Buehrle? Accroding to the ownership we are already a bit over our budget, adding that much more money is NOT going to happen.
  8. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) cash reserves to finance the deficit, and you expect revenues to grow in the future to the point where they would be able to cover both the increased costs and the repayment of the debt...which simply can't happen here, as the stadium is only so big. We're not talking about a government here which can simply print money. And there is a HUGE point. After this year, the odds are the revenue wont grow so much that we can afford to payback a deficit. Considering we just won our first world series title in 88 years, its safe to say that we shouldnt expect another one. Meaning that this year could very well be our most profitable in years. But that also means that eventually the revenue stream will go back down a bit.
  9. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:44 PM) Got any historical or otherwise sources for that? I have the annual Forbes reports which have shown year, after year, after year, after year, that whatever profit the Sox make in one year, the payroll goes up by that amount the next year. If they post a loss, the payroll gets cut by that amount. Look it up. If you have a better source than a World reknowned financial magazine who does analysis of the worlds biggest companies, please let me know. And the Post King steps in with a royal owning.
  10. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:36 PM) According to Brooks Boyer, they have gone from a 10K base to over 20K. I think that constitutes "double". (I wasn't a math major!) Thats obvious enough. Kal, I like our redundant posts, you were just faster than I.
  11. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:32 PM) Operating on a budget means not spending more than you have. The Sox are FAR from spending more than they have or make. Ok captain no source. Considering your posts, its evident that you do not work in the business forum, nor have any relevant education relating to an operating budget. So I will state this as obvious as possible, so to not confuse you. The members of the board who run the sox are businessmen. They decide what is a good number of money for the team to spend per year. Some of that money is under a category called payroll. The board and its chief officer decided this year to expand our payroll by almost 30 million dollars. This was the number they deemed to be a decent risk considering our profit this year. Of course, since teams rarely repeat winning the world series, we have to take into account that this year, we may make less money, and the year after that, even less. To run a successful business you have to balance risk, with potential reward. They have examined these factors and determined our budget for this year. The aquisition of Abreu would put us over this number, so therefor we cannot aquire his salary.
  12. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) Ha, reunite him with his other brother now. That'd be cool Here's something to think about, though. Imagine how much fatter and slower he'd be after sitting out a whole year. Frankly, there arent that many catchers I would prefer over Molina. Moline batted .295 .336 with 15 hr in reduced time this year. Plus he basically shuts down the running game of the opposing team.
  13. It did seem like a simple formula. Then again, Delhomme did not look like the same QB as he had in EVERY playoff game before that.
  14. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) And you were holding back so well..... Hahaha, he has been too busy voting for himself for most likely to get flamed.
  15. I would take Molina if I was any team at this point. Hes better than just about every catcher in the NL central, why dont they go after him?
  16. QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 11:39 AM) 1. We'd be adding a Gold Glove. 2. It's not YOUR money! The Sox can more than afford to add Abreu! s***, lets get Palmiero, he won a gold glove too!!!! Its called a budget, look into it.
  17. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jan 23, 2006 -> 10:18 AM) I realize that, but he was the most touted and farthest along in his development at the time. IIRC he was one of the top 10 prospects in baseball, and he still hasn't done anything of note. Thats because for every top prospect than pans out, there are 5 that dont. Look at our "cant miss" guys over the past 5 years. s*** Joe Crede was an MVP, and Borchard was the 2nd coming of Babe Ruth. You cant never tell until they get there. I will take KW's approach of trading these "studs" for proven players all day long. I cant even believe some people in this thread wishing that KW would act like the twins or cleveland. You want to talk about fleecing? How about Aarond Miles for Uribe? How about getting a clutch playoff pitcher (Garcia) who won us our clinching game 2/3 rounds in the playoffs for bascially a bench catcher and a still unproven OF'er? Indians fans may hate or love this trade, but frankly, if Marte was so "cant miss" he wouldnt have been traded. No matter what a team needs, if you have the opportunity to have a player, who performs at a high level, for a low cost, for several years, you dont trade it.
  18. QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jan 22, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) but i thought Grossman was the savior. I thought he was supposed to be this great QB. If Grossman's stats aren't better than Orton's why make the switch. Grossman was not an upgrade over Orton and I watched every Bears game this year. They were the same. They both sucked. But if you have a QB who has started 14 games vs a QB who has started no games and he will at most have 6 quarters to play you pick the one who has started the 14 games. I know they rested Grossman against the Vikings however if you are that concerned that your QB is gonna get hurt he shouldn't be your QB. Hell even career wise there isn't that much of a difference. They both suck right now. Come on Josh, there is a reason that everyone in the world knows Grossman is a better QB than Orton. Dont you take a look at your opinions on sports: Hart is a heisman favorite, Edwards was the rookie of the year, Desmond Howard was a successful NFL WR, Kyle Orton is better than Grossman, and wonder to yourself: "Self, how is it that everything I say about sports seems to be the direct opposite of what really happens in the real world. Do I really know what im saying, or am I just making it up as I go?"
  19. QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Jan 21, 2006 -> 07:44 AM) Got my vote. Its hard to vote against a buckeye fan. you know it, we are a rare breed on this board.
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 04:18 PM) Pete Rose can get his face in the Hall of Fame right after Shoeless Joe does. egg-zactly.
  21. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 03:13 PM) Owens led the Southern League with a .331 average with a .393 OBP, which was higher than Anderson's numbers last year. Yes, it's a small one-year sample, but Anderson didn't have a spectacular 2004 either. Personally, I think adding Owens in the 2-hole will allow us to move Iguchi down in the order without a hude drop-off. I'm not sure Anderson is a #2 hitter. Now, our offense is stacked, and while praising Owens in December (Ozzie said he would let Jerry and Brian compete for the CF job in ST) - Ozzie also said that defense would be every bit as important as offense. So who knows? First of all, Uribe is going to be the #2 hitter. His numbers in the 2 hole were comparable if not better than Iguchis were this year, nobody ever mentioned Anderson hitting #2, read up on your team. Second, Owens is not a CF'er, he is a LF'er and placing him in center makes the defense worse. Third: One year sample. Exactly. Anderson has proven it at EVERY level, Jerry has not. Keep predicting Owens as this stud CF'er and you will be flamed every time its proven otherwise.
  22. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 20, 2006 -> 03:54 PM) Got to be redandwhite. He can't post without someone calling him out for his antics. See sig. My sig as well.
  23. Im casting my vote for addy, for my awesome sig.
