QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 6, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) The Cubs just lost 3-2 in the 9th. Again. Hawkins blew another save opp. The season is falling apart for the Cub because they have no closer & a weak bullpen. On the S Side it's the opposite. The Sox have 3 guys who are probably just as good as the next to close in Hermanson & Marte. But the S Side has a struggling Konerko in his last yr before FA. D Lee would give the Sox a bonified run producer & good defender at 1B for the next couple of years. All at a reasonable price below Koney's. Getting Shingo would allow the Cubs to then entertain trades with the NYY"s to get rid of Hawkins. The Cubs might be able to do a Hawkins for Karsay trade. Both had far greater success in their former leagues. Marketing wise the WSox would be giving up a player they built a theme around. Not an easy thing to do. But D Lee could make his own name on S Side as well. If the Cub think D Lee is worth more than Shingo + Koney then they can keep him & keep their losing ways as well. guess I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue

I'd pick pauly based on sexon will probably spend some time on the DL this season, and I think paul will be a consistent bat in the lineup.

QUOTE(quickman @ May 6, 2005 -> 11:00 AM) This is an interesting topic. Two things will play out during this month. We will find out if good pitching beats good hitting. We will also find out if the Sox will break out of their collective hitting slump. Both actually need to happen if we want to prove ourselves out. In my opinion we cannot continue to win like yesterday, we need to hit the damn ball. No pitching staff is better to break out of a slump against than the O's, they are terrible. I think we can face some bottom tier starters coming up, and that may drive us to pour in some runs.

QUOTE(Finkelstein @ May 6, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) I agree that it should be on Kenny's long list of things to get done, but not before you deal with PK, Frank etc. The last thing that we need is for AJ to get a long term deal and stop feeling the need to prove his worth, although this should be a pride issue regardless of contract status. That being said, AJ has done a wonderful job with this staff and I would love to see him here for years to come. Plus, what would we do without his speed on the basepaths? I dont mean to make a huge tangent here. This may draw some criticism as well, but I dont think we should re-sign PK. I know it sounds a little over the top, but as far as kenny making a big deal, alot of people have mentioned Huff, and I think Kenny can pull the string on that deal, then we can unload PK. Heres to wishful thinking

QUOTE(YASNY @ May 6, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) That's a stretch. And even if one of these kids can make the team in 2 years, are they going to be the starter? Highly unlikely. Agreed, I just dont want to be locked up into a contract with AJ in case one of these guys turns out to be a stud.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 6, 2005 -> 09:28 AM) Francisco Hernandez and Donny Lucy won't be ready for 3 years minimum. Lucy struggled at rookie ball last season, and Hernandez is only down at low A Kanny as we speak. I just see a 19 year old, maybe he is 20 now down at low a can possibly be scraping the top of the system in 2 years. I see him at least at W-S by the end of the year.

I'll tell you why im against a long term deal of AJ. First I think a 2 year deal would suffice, but signing him any longer than that may cause a log-jam of catchers in our system. He have several catching prospects in A and double A ball that will be ready in 2 years. I wouldnt want to be forced to get rid of that talent simply because we signed AJ to a long term deal. its been quite awhile since we have had some catching talent in our system.

Lets hope the attitude stays positive, thats all I have to say
