  1. A paperweight in the shape of a five-pointed star with a clock in the middle.
  2. This is beyond pathetic -- I really think it's going to backfire on Her Inevitability.
  3. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 04:54 PM) After a weekend at the beach surfing, my feet are absolutely burnt and red, and it really hurts to walk at the moment. Have tried soaking them in cold water and putting some aloe vera cream on them, does anyone else know of some possible remedies? If you can find some lidocaine gel, that works wonders.
  4. Hey! I drink bourbon. Not as much as I'd like, though. Vodka is good because it mixes with anything and you can't taste it, really. I'm surprised more of the college crowd hasn't mentioned anything with Red Bull.
  5. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) Twins are freakin pissed God, it's fun to read the comments from the Yanks fans. What a bunch of tools.
  6. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 2, 2007 -> 11:25 PM) It's a shame Hawaii and Kansas made the BCS by avoiding playing anybody, but hey this system does suck, so it happens. IIRC, Hawaii had Michigan State on their schedule, but Sparty bought out the contract. I think they also tried to get a game with Michigan, but UM played App. State instead. So while it's true that Hawaii didn't play anyone, it's not true that they avoided playing anybody. Two things that should happen, but never will -- a playoff and no polls taken until the first weekend in October. Oh well. Great regular season, lousy postseason system-- NCAA Football in a nutshell.
  7. Stoli is far better than Absolut, FWIW. I agree with the Ketel recommendation, because it actually has some flavor.
  8. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 10:14 AM) Any advice to give for someone who's about to fire an employee for the first time? Everything Los said, plus keep your cool. Letting people go truly sucks, but it has to be done sometimes.
  9. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 1, 2007 -> 03:32 AM) It's rained pretty much all day today, well actually a steady drizzle, with an occasional shower. That might not seem like a big deal, but we got more rain today than they've seen around here in a few years put TOGETHER. Kind of amusing to see everyone spinning out on the roads. I woke to the trickling sound of running water this morning and I thought one of the toilets had overflown. When I sat up I realized the room was still dark at 8 am. I opened the blinds and there was no blazing sun in my eyes. It was raining, so I stood outside and just watched it for about 15 minutes. I missed rain. Welcome to Palm Desert!
  10. I have that Ripken card, too. It's the only card I still own. I also have a ball signed by Bill Veeck and 1977 World Series and ALCS tickets printed by the Sox.
  11. I remember all the hullabaloo during the summer of 1974 (I was 10). During some of the coverage, someone asked the ABC science correspondent if he thought Evel would make the jump over the Snake River Canyon. I was thinking, "Didn't we just send men to the moon? Of course he can make it." I seem to remember an incident where he snuck out of Hinsdale Hospital after an injury sometime in the mid 70's, too.
  12. Alpha, in response to your question about drivers honoring picket lines at other places, I would imagine that they had union meetings at their own places of business and the members voted to honor the picket lines. In that case, management would eventually have to fire all of their drivers, since none of them would cross. In that case, it's easier to hand a manager keys to a truck and have him cross.
  13. It's already been pointed out that Letterman, Leno, et al. are members of the Guild and therefore have a union obligation to strike, but their shows are also dependent on the writers. They couldn't possibly put out anything resembling the same product with replacement writers, so why bother?
  14. QUOTE(hi8is @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 06:29 PM) believe it or not... nothing. Good for you! Keep at it, every day, man. Good to see you around these parts.
  15. It was a stupid vicious "hit" from a stupid man. I know this isn't what you opened this for, but Charles Martin, a nonentity it the NFL, waited until he was in the backfield with Jim, and about three seconds after McMahon threw a pass, he sidled over to #9, lifted him off the ground (nice effort, thug, you're only about 100 pounds heavier than Jim) and slammed him to the ground, right shoulder first. Frankly, I have never seen a worse move in the NFL. It was not a "hit", it was a predetermined effort to severely injure a player. It was a pathetic attempt to end a man's career. They showed a picture of Martin on the sidelines after the cowardly thing he did. On his towel, there was a "hit list" of Bears. Charles Martin is about one level above blue-green algae.
  16. QUOTE(Linnwood @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 02:20 AM) Hunter lives, as I understand it, in Texas. So it doesn't matter what the income tax is in IL or CA, as he wouldn't be paying it. (This is the reason so many professional athletes, as well as members of the military, claim Florida as home. They have no income tax.) Regarding the article, It bothers me how both the White Sox and the Rangers made concerted efforts to convince Hunter that they were teams that could win and would be good fit, and in the end Anaheim invited him to a fast food restaurant, threw a pile of money at him and said "So?" I'm just glad KW didn't try to out bid LAA. If I'm not mistaken, many, if not all, states (ones that have an income tax, that is) have laws that tax performers and athletes for their performances in that state. So playing in a non-income tax state would be beneficial to any athlete, since he'd only have to pay state tax on half his games.
  17. Rock is the best choice in the last box. Unfortunately, he played at the same time as Rickey, and that comparison will detract from his chances, since leadoff men often get short shrift from the voters. Blyleven is by far the best choice in the middle, and Gossage, Morris and Mattingly are the best of the top bunch. I don't see any of those guys getting the nod this year, though. Maybe Blyleven -- or maybe East Coast Bias puts Donny Ballgame over the top. Could we be looking at a year where no one gets elected?
  18. QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) no love for jaeger yet either? that stuff is like candy. Guilty Pleasure time.
  19. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) Ah, the Schwartz is with you. Kostritzer is a long-time favorite of mine and the schwarzbier style is my favorite German dark lager style. Gooood stuff. I should have known! We've got something here in Mpls. that you'd like, if you're into hops. The Furious, in particular.
  20. Maker's Mark, on the rocks or in a Manhattan. Bombay Sapphire Martinis, shaken, up, one olive. Jim, try some Kostritzer if you can find some. It's worth a search.
  21. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 11:22 AM) By "Scrooge", I assume you mean the 1951 Christmas carol adaptation with Alastair Sim in the lead role, and not Bill Murry's "Scrooged" (which is itself quite fun). The Alastair Sim Christmas Carol is THE Christmas Carol, and I'll have words with any man who sez otherwise. For anybody who hasn't seen it, the Matt Goening and Drew Barrymore animated adaptation of "Olive the Other Reindeer" from a few years back should be a classic by now but I know lots of people have yet to discover it. The Alistair Sim Christmas Carol is the only one worth watching. Period. I've got your back, Jim. I love A Christmas Story, too. It should be on every Sox fan's list of favorites. Jean Shepard was a dyed-in-the-wool Sox fan, after all.
  22. QUOTE(bighurt4life @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 12:05 AM) why doesn't Happy Felsh ever get the respect he deserves for being a great slugger? Um, because he was a crook?
