I really thought LSU was going to pull another rabbit out of their hat. -

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I spoke to a friend of mine yesterday who was on the field at the end of the game. He is a blond guy in Stanford red at about the 10 or 15 yard line when Moen has the ball and is running through the band. You can't really tell it's him, of course. He said that whenever Stanford wins the Axe, the athletic department changes the score of the game to 20-19 Stanford and Cal has to change it back when they win it. Fun times, indeed! -
Even before I opened this thread, I thought, "This must be a story from Wisconsin."

I can't find a very good picture, but Torii likes to wear his cap cocked to the side, too.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) ISU a one point favorite over the Goph. Why isn't this on BTN? Because it's in Hilton? -
I acted in High School and in College. I was in an independent ultra-low-budget (i. e.: I didn't get paid) short filmed a year ago that is currently unreleased. If I ever get a copy or find where it's posted online, I'll let you know. Edit: unless I really suck, which doesn't appear to be the case, fortunately.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 10:46 PM) Someone wrote in a book I'm reading, "MASH became a series about Vietnam once removed to Korea." What does that mean? I never watched the show so I know. Is there truth to that? Was MASH really a bad look at Korea? Did it have anything to really do with Korea? The book was about Korea. The film was nominally about Korea, but it was actually Robert Altman's dark comedic take on the war in Vietnam, since it was released in 1970.

YASNY, you're thinking of Cookie Lavagetto, kinda. The guy who robber DiMaggio of an extra-base hit in that series was Al Gionfriddo. -
Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) I couldn't disagree more. C22 is my favorite book. I saw the movie recently after looking for it for years. It was ok, and got the basic plot out, but it was missing so, so much of what made the book so great. Maybe we disagree here because I saw the film before I read the book. A great book like Catch-22 almost defies adaptation, but I felt like the film did a good job with it. It's been a while. Maybe I should refresh my memory. -

Catch-22. Great book, great film. Agree with Big Ed on Jaws. It's amazing how good the film is out of such a bad book. Old (and probably untrue) story. Ernest Hemingway and Howard Hawks were discussing the relative merits of literature vs. film. Hawks proclaimed that he could make a very good film out of Hemingway's worst novel. Next day. Hemingway handed Hawks a copy of To Have and Have Not. There's an example of a film that's lots better than the novel. -
QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 07:37 AM) No. Why would I? Apparently you are too. Didn't Hilter say the same about Jews? Not before factory farming became the norm earlier in the 20th century. Before then, eating meat was not very common for most people. It was expensive and mostly exclusive to the wealthy. Hence the diseases of affluence. Get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?
-
Don't like meat? Or the way it's processed? Don't eat it! As someone who self-identifies as left-of-center, one thing that irks me about some fellow lefties is that they accuse others of intolerance and are intolerant themselves sometimes. The world could use a healthy dose of anti-intolerance medicine. I'll be in line for the first dose, right after my flu shot. Just sayin'.

High School Parents Trying to Ban Book
Mplssoxfan replied to LowerCaseRepublican's topic in The Filibuster
As Flaxx (I think) stated above, most school systems have a procedure in place as to what books are acceptable. I assume that the district in question said, before the class was being taught, that the books by Conroy were acceptable for the class they were going to be used for. I don't think those books would be acceptable for a fifth grade class, but for a class full of Seniors, I think it's ok. Let the parents go to the school board and complain. That's fine. The school board can then point to its guidelines and say that the book is approved. The parents then can sue the school board, I guess, but it probably won't get them anywhere. After the suit, they can run for the school board if they care to. I still do not think that one or two parents should dictate what the school curriculum should be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vandy, if you wish to take a AP level voluntary elective, don't you want it to be as challenging and as rigorous as an actual college class? If I were one of the parents of the rest of the class, I would resent one or two people trying to mess with my child's right to an education. I wouldn't want to take that class and be reading texts meant for ninth graders. It wouldn't make any sense. Also, as Flaxx pointed out, these students probably hear things every day in the hallways that are far worse than the book passages. -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) That's actually an interesting point. But, is it that he can't be President, or that he can't be voted President? If someone is in the line of succession, does the exemption still apply? There is no exception.

Rex, I was just riffing off the fact that a couple of Michigan fans I know (not here) were adamant that Lloyd would lose his job if they didn't run the table in the Big Ten. You have to think his seat got a little hotter today even though, as Brian pointed out, the loss wasn't his fault. I give him about a 1/3 chance of keeping his job. If Michigan loses next week, he might as well put his house on the market. -

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 12:31 PM) They have never passed a real fix, they pass a law every year using stop gap measures. True, but this latest bill is a genuine fix. Unfortunately, it won't get past a veto, even if it's passed by the Senate.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) Question. Is Holtz at the Berman level as far as annoyance goes? Different styles, but neither contributes anything and pisses me off whenever they speak. Those of us who are old enough and are Golden Gopher fans wouldn't cross the street to see Lou Holtz. Hell, we might cross the street to avoid him. -
1984 World Series would have been at Comiskey
Mplssoxfan replied to WhiteSoxfan1986's topic in The Diamond Club
I'm not doubting Uberroth's honesty or memory, but what a logistical nightmare that would have been. The Cubs - Padres Game Five ended in San Diego at about 6pm central time. If the Cubs had won, they would have hosted Game One of the World Series at about 7:15 on Tuesday. 49 hours to get every fan with a ticket for the game a new one plus sell about 15-20 thousand more? Let's say I'm highly skeptical.
