The 4 Things That Worry Me About John McCain
Mplssoxfan replied to jasonxctf's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 22, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) The true conservatives will se what he has done down there already and take that as a positive. The true RELIGIOUS conservatives will not be happy with anyone that doesn't fit their narrow mold. As for foreign policy, it could be interesting. However, most negotiating goes on at levels below the Presidency, so it shouldn't come into play too often. Although State dinners could be interesting. I will add, though, that I don't think Jindal takes the job if offered. Why bother traveling to Sedona then? -
This oil supply update is bad news.

Leave it to the St. Paul Saints to have a promotion that could only end up in the Filibuster. Bobblefoot Day on Sunday. Alas, I'm working.

Man, I looked at the second pic of Heather Locklear in CC's reply and I recoiled. She looks like skeletor!

The 4 Things That Worry Me About John McCain

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 20, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) I was merely pointing out that if anger is a concern, there is anger on both sides. I honestly don't know how anyone could go through a campaign for President without getting angry at some point. -
Jesse Ventura is making noises about filing for the MN Senate race between Norm Coleman and (probably) Al Franken. What a wild ride that would be. Latest poll in that race has Coleman beating both of the two Dems still competing for the endorsement.

Before I start, I'd like to say that I really enjoy these discussions, even though I realize I bring a different perspective to things. I'm going to have to dig in my heels here, because it's been a while since I've read Cobb, and I don't trust Wikipedia's list of leadoff men. That list has Joe Morgan and Craig Biggio as leadoff hitters, which is patently untrue. Those two hit out of the two-hole. And look at who they have as the Sox' 2008 leadoff man! FWIW, here's a quote from Cobb's Wikipedia entry. I guarantee Sam Crawford wasn't hitting second in the Tiger's lineup, so where does that leave us? Look, I said I wasn't going to do a lot of research for this, and I've already probably passed my limit. If some of you want to assert that Cobb was a leadoff man, that's cool. I agree with Hammerhead that if you were putting together a lineup of all-time greats, you'd put Cobb at leadoff. Where else would he make sense? Every one on that list is a 3 - 4 hitter.

I'm certainly not going to do any kind of in-depth research for this thread, but if you go to retrosheet and look at the box scores from the 1907-1909 World Series, you'll see that he batted cleanup in every game in 1907 and 1908 and third in 1909. I, personally, have never seen much evidence that Cobb was a leadoff hitter. I'm certain that he did hit in that spot from time to time, but I'm sticking with my assertion that he was a 3 -4 hitter. If Williams or Musial hit leadoff, they'd be the best leadoff hitters of all time, too. Same with Bonds or Ruth. They are much more valuable in the spots in which they actually hit, though, just as Cobb was.

I'm a little late, and I hope you haven't gone in yet. Whatever you do, do not go in either drunk or smelling of liquor. That means that you shouldn't have one last fling the night before you surrender. If you want to have that one last fling, do it a couple of nights before. If you only have to serve 10 days of a longer suspended sentence, you run the chance that the suspension will be revoked and you have to serve the entire sentence.

Cobb was a better hitter than Rickey, but he didn't bat leadoff. He was a 3 - 4 hitter. Therefore, I stand by my statement earlier in the thread.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 15, 2008 -> 01:54 PM) I called it pop as well. Great map. I remember being at a McD's in Macon GA and asking for a Coke. "What kind of Coke?" "Um... Coke." "Okay, then!"

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 14, 2008 -> 04:06 PM) They could have prevented the book from being published, or at worst they could have asked for a restraining order preventing the sections of the grand jury testimony from being released. Unless I missed some new case law, this statement is demonstrably false. I'm fairly certain that the precedent against prior restraint is well settled, but if you can prove me wrong, please do.

Rickey was, quite simply, the greatest leadoff hitter in history. There are some fantastic stories about him, too. Apparently, he used to take his meal money and put it in envelopes. He'd take those envelopes home and put them in a box, and when one of his daughters warranted a reward for some reason (grades being one, IIRC), he'd get out the box and let them take an envelope. There's another story about a large check that didn't clear the bank for weeks. The ballclub was concerned and called Rickey's agent to inform him that there was no record of the check clearing. Turns out that Rickey had had the check framed and it was hanging on his wall in his living room.

QUOTE (Reddy @ May 15, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) here's why the Edwards endorsement matters and the right thing at the right time: Obama IS the nominee, the math all but proves it. So what did West Virginia show us? Obama has a HUGE problem with blue collar whites. So the smart thing and the right thing to do for the party was for John Edwards to come out for Obama while the media is talking about his blue collar problem. This will help erase that. I'm sure John would rather Clinton won, but since she WON'T this is the best way for him to still make a difference in this election and help this party win in November, which is the most important thing. He needed to come out for Obama and this was the best time to do it. Here's a related piece from Reason on Edwards' help for Obama. Strangely enough, some of the commenters don't seem to like either Obama or Edwards. Go figure.

A funny story, and one that might be laughed at by Sox fans, after the last week. I work in a restaurant/bar and for some stupid reason, I've scheduled myself to open Saturdays and Sundays. When I walked behind the bar yesterday (Sunday), I was greeted by a half-inflated blow-up doll (not anatomically correct and wearing a bikini). The doll's legs were spread and between the thighs were a beer and a shot. Hilarious! It was two women who put this display up, with help from a guy. Seems that ballplayers aren't the only ones who let off steam with plastic!

QUOTE (bmags @ May 8, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) Also, if people watched PBS more for election coverage, a lot of the unsubstantial garbage we are talking about would need not apply. Elitist.

A month ago, gas here was $3.35/gal. Last week, it was $3.47/gal. Yesterday, it went to $3.65/gal. Bear in mind that there are two refineries less than an hour south of here. I saw a guy filling his conversion van and his boat yesterday. He was not happy. I hope that the ice is out on the lake he's going to this weekend. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Talking to a friend in Key West, they're at $3.89/gal., up from $3.65 an month ago. I am so glad I don't drive.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 3, 2008 -> 08:50 AM) This reminds me... having had many similar experiences, I always thought that if I had the capital to invest, I had a great idea for a theater experience. You build a more or less normal theatre, but the entrance has a very small bar. You can only enter if you are 21, period. You only have a very narrow selection of beers, and few seats, and you don't allow the booze into the theatre. You then also have an usher who actually stays IN the theatre for each movie, and actually tells people to be quiet if necessary (and asks them to leave, also, if necessary). You also make the warnings much more pronounced that if you start talking or annoying people or using your damn phone, you will be asked to leave (and then actually follow through). The overage you make on the booze sales could help with the extra usher costs, or you even add a dollar or two to the movie price. What do you get? A theater with adults in it, no kids, and a respectful audience. All for a dollar or two more per person. I would gladly pay that difference for the experience. You could also do this as only part of the theatre - these X number of screens are on the other side of the bar, the rest can be normal screens for families, teenagers, etc. I see enormous Dram Shop problems with this. It might work, but it'd be a problem making money.

I am sober, too. Luckily, I have major experience in fixing such a dire situation.
