  1. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 4, 2005 -> 10:31 AM) What? Sometimes I see AJ looking into the dugout for every pitch. Maybe it's Cooper calling the game? Ozzie (or Don) probably call pitchouts, but not pitches.
  2. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) Yes! I was thinking Karma Bums--but I knew it was wrong. You're wicked well read. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 3, 2005 -> 12:34 AM) You're spending too much time on the east coast Soxy. Can I offer you a pop to help return your normal midwestern drawl? This is the funniest thing I've read in at least a week. I'm reading a lot more history than is healthy right now -- just reread At Dawn We Slept which is very relevant to these times. I have too much fiction in the queue and too little time to read any of it. Life gets in the way, doesn't it?
  3. It is very easy to second guess any manager. I have no doubt that most, if not all, of us were muttering and shaking our heads (or worse) during the 9th yesterday. I thought Ozzie probably should have lifted Mark a batter earlier, so he wouldn't have been exposed to the loss. However, whenever a manager does something contrary to "The Book" and it fails, he gets roasted. The major problem I have with roasting Ozzie here is that "The Book" isn't codified, isn't written down. It exists in the minds of all fans, announcers and media people, all of whom have a different take on what it says. If Ozzie had brought Cliff in to face Quinlan and Sciocia (sp?) had countered with Erstad and Erstad had gotten a hit, we'd all be complaining that Ozzie should have had Damaso pitch to Quinlan. Frankly, I like the (paraphrased) thoughts of Whitey Herzog here.
  4. Cal Tech is pretty much the MIT of the West Coast, except for the fact that it's smaller and tougher to get into.
  5. It's incredibly difficult to choose, but I had to go with the switch. The shrug is Numero Dos.
  6. I had a time, The time of my life. I met a man, He danced with his wife. In Chicago, Chicago, my home town!
  7. The name of Carrasquel figures in a Kurt Vonnegut short story -- unfortunately, I cannot remember which one. I'll post an update later, after I look it up. Another great story, which I'll have to post an update on, since I'm nowhere near any source material: Then-Vice President Richard Nixon traveled to Venezuela in 1959 (I think) and was treated to a rather hostile reception, things being thrown at him, and such. When hearing the reports, a prominent member of the Chicago Baseball media supposedly said, "If the rest of the Venezuelan people hit like Carrasquel, Nixon shouldn't have a problem." A fine shortstop and, according to those who knew him, a better man than a ballplayer. He will be missed.
  8. QUOTE(sec159row2 @ May 23, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) and they are releasing a "best of" album?????? "best of" what??? Damnit, man, you beat me to it!
  9. I cut the grass often... and mow the lawn not so often.
  10. Agreed, lcr. Gorshin ruled.
  11. I was always told that although, technically, tie goes to the batter (or runner), the batter (or runner) is either safe or out. There is no such thing as a tie. Safe or out. If the play is close enough to be a "tie", there is obviously going to be some subjectivity. Umpires, especially in the majors, think about black vs. white -- not in terms of "ties". Like strike or ball -- there's no such thing as "outside corner".
  12. Top nine, here comes Nathan.
  13. Here's a little more fuel for the fire... http://story.news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20...n/132550/nc:742
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 18, 2005 -> 02:18 AM) Addressing concerns is one thing, but thread after thread of curse filled ranting and unflattering "nicknames" for our players when this is, so far, the best White Sox team that any of us can remember is nuts. Well said, YAS. Let's all take a deep breath and realize where we are -- 5.5 games up, 28-12. We have a group of 25 human beings, 30+ including Oz and the coaches, all of whom are flawed in some way or another, working wonderfully with each other and, so far, achieving great things. I know it's not in the nature of a White Sox fan to accept praise or be content with what we have, but, I for one, am determined to enjoy this fantastic 2005 season.
  15. Great thread, this. My family moved to the midwest from Connecticut when I was 9. I hadn't really settled on one team yet, so when my Dad started taking me to Comiskey (at the time officially known as White Sox Park) it was magical -- 1973. Loud, boisterous, passionate fans. Too passionate, sometimes. You could count on a fight or two during the second game of a doubleheader, more in the bleachers. Bill Veeck bought the club, restored the Comiskey name and Bob Lemon somehow kept the Sox in contention into September in 1977 with the Hitmen. What a year that was. I seriously doubt that any regular on that team could play for this one. Maybe Zisk. Tomy LaRussa took that 1983 club into the ALCS and we won Game One. But the O's pitching was too much. A few years later Hawk fired Tony, which pretty much showed everyone that Hawk was a better announcer than a GM. I'm getting way too sentimental here, but I feel I should echo some of the others' advice: enjoy this ride. This group is a joy to watch. Their collective selflessness is tremendous to behold. GO SOX!
  16. I was watching Tyson-Holyfield II (the ear fight) in a ballroom in the Sox Team hotel in Minneapolis when, lo and behold, Frank took a seat right next to me. We chatted about boxing for a little bit, then watched the mayhem. Genuinely nice guy. Another nice guy was Jim Abbott. I let him and Kirk McCaskill, who's nice himself, hang out in the bar I worked at when they both pitched for the Halos. That bar then became the Angels' pitchers' bar whenever they came to town. The pitching coach for Cleveland, Carl Willis, pitched for the Twinks in the early 90's. I got to hold his WS ring the night he got it. That was pretty cool. The one that got away, though, was drinking from the Stanley Cup. I had to pick up a shift at my bar the night that Tom Chorske, who was with the Devils at the time, brought the Cup to one of my fav bars in Mpls. Chorske still gives me crap about it.
  17. Jones lost a ball in the lights! 7-6 Texas!
  18. Nathan just bare-handed a hot grounder and gave up a one-out single.
  19. Twinks-Rangers going to extra innings, sixes.
