  1. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 15, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) I suspect the trade talk has started to make an impact. The guy is human...how could it not? Plus as per usual, they can't score runs for him. That may finally be bothering him more than the trade talk. Mark If he is truly that weak mentally, he is not a #1 pitcher.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 13, 2017 -> 11:36 PM) If the White Sox were in the World Series for 2 of the last 3 years, you don't think you'd be hearing about it constantly? Especially when it took them 29 years just to get back to the playoffs. Agreed. I like homers for game calls. It's annoying from the outside listening in but for fans of the team, that's what they should do.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) This is interesting stuff on Giolito: http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/comm...AB8sTHxRs1K5.97 Thanks for posting that. Interesting that they added a slider. I would guess that they are purposely decreasing the velocity to try to improve command. The slider would then give a different look than the fastball/curve combo.
  4. Thanks. FWIW, I really like it. One thing that may be helpful for later on (it's not applicable now) is to add stats line for separate levels as they get promoted. That way people can compare their progress.
  5. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 14, 2017 -> 12:49 AM) Yes I was. Swarzak had just completed a great inning looking very strong and sharp And it wasn't his last outing as you say but the inning before. Strong because he didn't pitch much if at all in the 1st 4 games. Jones had pitched the day before. One guy fresh and strong hitting his spots Made the Indians look bad thats how good he was. I know the whole schpiel on Jones is the 8th inning guy with a proven track record as such. During the off season I was in the minority wanting to keep Jones as the setup man instead of moving him to closer after Robertson is traded. I think he is great in that role and didn't want to move him from his comfort zones since he already has established plenty of value. So big Jones fan here. It's not some off the cuff remark. I gave it plenty of thought. The opinion is just based on how damn good Swarzak looked in the 7th and Jones pitching last night. And I didn't second guess the move because Jones came on and almost coughed up the lead. I just thought he deserves to at least come out for the 8th and if the 1st guy gets on take him out. He deserved to be out there again .I think managing is as much intuition and common sense as doing things by the book and sometimes, if you're feeling it, when to throw the book out the window Plus I recall Jones was on the WBC team and had a late spring with the Sox . There's plenty of 8th inning chances for Jones the rest of the year. I have watched many years of baseball and know my baseball. I just would 've done it differently. Play the hot hand . There are two reasons to take Swarzak out. 1. They don't want to use him for multiple innings so that he couldn't be used the next day. 2. Jones is the #2 guy in the pen. They need to get him in and get his issues worked out during a game and that's his role.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 04:39 PM) Those are two separate ownership groups with very different make ups. The JR group owns almost all of the Bulls, while they own somewhere around a quarter of the White Sox. They aren't even the largest single share holder of the White Sox if nothing has changed recently. And the absolute last person on the planet that JR would sell any team to would be Cuban. He HATES the guy, and has tried to block him at every single turn, including being the only vote against him buying the Mavs. The one thing JR really hates is the "he who spends the most money wins." He has fought for years to make baseball a more level playing field. He would never condone Cuban getting a team.
  7. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 04:15 PM) SS2K can correct me but I'm pretty sure it's just a lump sum and that the Padres aren't actually sending the Sox a check every month. If the Sox want to send some cash a long with Shields it will be a lump sum as well. Thanks.
  8. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) I agree that it's been a pretty good week - can Shields possibly play his way into some trade value for an NL contender (if we pay some of that salary) Dare to dream How does the "pay part of the salary work?" Since San diego is paying half of his salary for the Sox, did they get a lump sum up front to cover it? If so then the Sox would be trading the whole contract. Or does San diego pay part each year, so that money would follow Shields to the next stop?
  9. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) He was the low guy on Moncada prior to his big league time. Yes, he was. I'm just referring to his philosophy in general. You'll see the guys like Kopech who are lower in the minors talked about more than the ones in the upper minors. He values the potential more and likes to push it.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 12, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) I agree with you, but this board is insane with the trashing any negative write-ups on players or prospects as biased and chasing any good reports as the "real" reports. He has Moncada ranked THIRTEENTH. He obviously thinks he is good. In general he ranks potential higher. In Moncada's case he flopped in the MLB debut. Kopech still hasn't proven anything but he goes by what he could be. He likes to sensationalize the potential which is what people who follow the minors like.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) I have no doubt the Sox want to sign him to an extension like they did with Anderson but I don't know if Moncada would do that. He'd probably want to test free agency when he's 28 or 29. I'm not sure about this. 1. They waited until Anderson proved something in the MLB. 2. There was complete agreement that Anderson was the type of kid that wouldn't let the contract go to his head and just cruise after he signed the contract. Neither of these has been proven for Moncada. If he meets the criteria fine but he hasn't met either yet.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 09:52 PM) I think people still care way too much about strikeouts. It's like the other posters have said. If it stays at this rate in the MLB, it will be fine. however, high K rates in the minors may have a bigger effect on the contact rate in the MLB if it goes up and the BB rate goes down. It isn't a death sentence right now but it isn't a positive.
  13. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 07:50 PM) Some of you guys have terrible sarcasm or tongue in cheek detectors. That post was just poking fun at Levine and his non-information. Millenials........
  14. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 05:31 PM) There are also roughly 100,000,000 more things people can do now with their free time vs. watching a s***ty team. This is true for the casual fan but not for the season ticket holders. I would guess there will be a few more available but not a substantial amount. Of course, it could be just my section of season ticket holders.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 04:29 PM) The no-shows in 2016 tell a difference story. Yes, but they still bought the season tickets and there was little turnover. People may not go to all but they won't give up the season tickets.
  16. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 04:02 PM) None of those players...yet Remember Torres was dealt recently from the Cubs when they were in contention and really needed Chapman to solidify the back of their bullpen...a similar situation could happen at the deadline when a contender needs a starter Torres however is far away from the MLB. To be considered equal to the Sale deal, the primary piece would need to be close to MLB ready. Torres was not. He is much more of a question just due to the fact of how far he is from the MLB.
  17. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 11:55 AM) That's where you're wrong. Maybe not quite the return, but it will be in the same ballpark. Q is 90% of sale and is signed for another year. Their overall surplus value is similar. I still disagree with this. Quintana is not viewed anywhere near the value of Sale, otherwise a deal would have been made. People keep saying it but the lack of a deal indicates otherwise. Edit: I should have read some of the subsequent posts. I'm going my answer to: Yeah! What he said.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 03:53 PM) It isn't the first time, but it is starting to add up to a lot of bad years in a row now. The Cubs winning isn't doing anyone in Chicago any favors with giving fans patience with their organizations either. Did you live through the teams in the 70's? This stretch is nothing compared to that. If people didn't give them up then, they probably still won't now. The patience factor might matter to other teams, but I think the Bears are a little different.
  19. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 03:36 PM) I've been asking that for a month. There no upside. He fulfills none of the requirements for being on this roster. He's not someone who can be peddled; nor is he someone who has a future. I think it's likely an extension of a FO bad habit of loving proven veterans, no matter how bad they are (although they usually favor the ones who were good at some point in their career; not always though - they had a long love affair with DeWayne Wise, e.g.). So pick someone who does meet the requirements from the minors. He needs to have completed his MiLB development. The team needs to think he is ready to make the jump to the MLB.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:47 PM) if you aren't a fan of the Cubs, there really isn't a worst time in recent history to be a fan of Chicago sports in general. While the Hawks are on their run, they are a long way behind the Bulls/Bears/Sox in terms of popularity and relevancy. The Bears are the #1 team in Chicago, and are absolutely surrounded with mediocrity right now. They have to be blowing through their season ticket waiting list at a record pace. Not really. The season ticket holders are a pretty dedicated group. The has been a few but not many. We've had the same group around us since the 70's and the Bears have had some really bad runs in that time. I've seen many children grow up coming to game as people around me have seen my son grow up. This year will be interesting but I bet there won't be a huge turnover.
  21. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 01:40 PM) Epstein went over slot amounts in the draft for years but teams weren't technically penalized for doing so. In this case, I believe it's a lot different. That's not really bending the rules. That's following them. It would be the same today for the "salary cap." They can go over it's just that you have to pay for it. It's not like he "bent" rules suffered a penalty decreed by the commissioner.
  22. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 12:50 PM) Theo made a living by bending the rules. Do what you have to do. Theo made a living by drafting (and trading) well and out spending everyone else for FA and international FA.
  23. Yesterdays win 94 posts. Today's loss 148.
  24. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) Meaning? (stating the obvious)
  25. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 11:16 AM) Blister was a recurring issue a lot of last year for him. freidman (sp?) said in an interview the other day that he doesn't consider a starting staff to be 6 or 7 pitchers he looks at 9 to 10 with injuries and fatigue.
