  1. QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) 1 week away from Training Camp boys. I am anxious to hear how all these new Bears are looking. Not that I think they will be very good record wise but its going to be really interesting to see how they are used and who Fox and Fangio wind up liking . Just got an email that the Bears season tickets are in the mail! Unfortunately, I think their winning percentage will be worse than the Sox. However, the expectations are lower as well. I expected the Sox to be over .500 not so much for the Bears.
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 12:38 PM) JR has publicly said many times that when he's gone he recommended to his family that they sell the team. He's also said publicly that they have no interest in running the show when he's gone for what that's worth. Mark This is a distorted look at his comments. his comments were directed at the NBA teams are much easier and profitable to run due to the different situation ie, CBA, unions, in the individual sports. JR still believes that baseball concedes way to much to the players and costs are uncontrollable. That is why his kids should sell his shares of the team.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 12:38 PM) No. I just don't join lynch mobs. I just wonder why isn't this "historical" lack of offense not blamed on the hitting coach? Why was Ozzie Guillen's stint as a 3rd base coach all the experience anyone really needs? Robin actually did better his first year as a manager with probably a lot less roster. Why were all the moves made this winter praised and Rick Hahn admired, and when they didn't work, then shifted to KW's decisions, and Hahn is nothing but a puppet? And if Rick Hahn is KW's b****, why would anyone think he would have any reasonable chance to succeed as a GM on his own? Exactly. If this situation is true, why would anyone want Hahn around?
  4. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 12:35 PM) There's a theory, don't know if there is any truth to it or not that catchers because they have to look at the game from a different standpoint than other positional players make the best managers. Could be part of the reason Mike is doing so well. Plus I don't think anybody would disagree that the Cardinals are a better organization with a far superior minor league operation. Mark It's a theory that really hasn't proven anything. There have been plenty of good managers that weren't catchers. It's the person not the position.
  5. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 21, 2015 -> 11:45 AM) Dick: Kenny in my view is a big part of the problem but pinning the entire situation on one guy is wrong in my opinion. Do I think the organization would be better off if JR allows him to leave to say Toronto this off season? Absolutely and many of the off season moves have a Kenny feel to them given his M.O. for over a decade. But that won't solve all the problems, especially in drafting and minor league player development. Kenny doesn't have a lot of hands-on stuff in those areas from what I know. Mark So we are back to Hahn being an absolute moron to take a job where he has no power and decline other jobs where he has power. So Hahn needs to go as well since he has no ambition to do the job.
  6. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 06:38 PM) Shark + Cell to Cubs for Wrigley Is the urine smell included or extra?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 10:45 AM) Sun-Times Sports ‏@suntimes_sports 23m23 minutes ago Rick Hahn: Chris Sale isn't untouchable in trade talks -- but he's close. http://chicago.suntimes.com/baseball/7/71/...talks-hes-close … That's the way it should be. With his talent, age and contract a team would need to send an entire infield of MLB ready prospects/young players for him. No one is totally untouchable.
  8. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 03:50 PM) That's what I've been thinking as well. It just seems fishy to me that they're giving him extra rest after he's already been off for a week, but who knows at this point. Not if he is resting some type of soreness. Not necessarily a significant injury, just one of his sore elbow issues or shoulder soreness.
  9. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 05:50 PM) Other than not getting injured not a very good development year for Montas so far. Hasn't developed his secondary pitches and seems like for the most part scouts call his heater "flat" and "straight" even though it's coming at 99-102mph. This is a very Sox move to promote him rather than Johnson. I'm not sure what they are thinking. Possible it's that they want relievers more often than starters. johnson has had enough issues without trying him in the pen for one day.
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 11:02 PM) By the way, if Sale wants to coddle Robin/Coop, whoever made this call, he'll say after the game he didn't quite feel right since his last start and asked for the time off. That will shut up people like me whether it's true or not. Will Sale cooperate and say this? Hmmmmm Or maybe it will be true.
  11. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:09 PM) When has buying old veterans ever worked? Youkilis is the only one I can remember and we gave up next to nothing for him, as Valentine channeled Ozzie in his ferocity in wanting the player off his team. (The subsequent Williams moves for veterans that year didn't help at all.) Aramiz Ramirez is 37 and has an OPS of .692. Difference maker or silly hero worship? Fast Freddy Garcia, Contreras, Hernadez. Fisk was in his 30's when the White Sox got him.
  12. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 11:20 AM) Sale will have 7 days rest if he pitches Sunday. He didn't pitch in ST. Why would they?: a. choose to do such an enormous favor to Ned and the Royals b. choose now, when there's an outside chance of getting back into semi-contention over the next few weeks, to give him the periodic "extra rest", can't that wait a couple weeks? UNLESS, they really don't want to face the conundrum and potential white flag-esque bad pub that would undoubtedly happen if they were to reach .500, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 back for the second WC, and still sold. Similarly, if they choose now to be extra-cautious with Abreu, I'll be suspicious. Never want to believe that a single game of 162 means too much, but it's just possible that Sunday's 2 hit anemia was the final nail in the org's consideration of competing. And maybe Sale will start Sunday - should be interesting. Maybe he is having some of his normal elbow issues and that's why they want him to have more rest. As a matter of fact, that is probably the only reason they would give him that amount of rest.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 09:35 PM) Ptatc: Tell me what other pitchers and players are in jeopardy tonight? Is it just Sale? Why haven't we heard about other teams wanting to hold players out tonight? Is this just a Sale issue? Is he the only big league pitcher susceptible to being hurt if used tonight? Would you have told him to stay home and add a player who might help the AL team win? Without knowing the particular situation there is no telling which manager/GM told them how to pitch their guys. Those discussions happen every year. Maybe Sale was feeling some elbow tenderness that the team doesn't want the rest of the league to know about. Maybe he wanted to pitch even with the soreness and was told no. Before you go accusing people of things just remember you will never get all of the information and most teams do things they need to to protect their own interests. I've had to hold players out from playing. I was once called every name in the book plus ones I has never heard before when I told Don Majkowski he couldn't play in a game. He threatened my family. Sometimes it's for their own good.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 09:25 PM) Then you tell me please why any team has agreed to let their players play in this EXHIBITION game! Anybody could get hurt. How dare anybody be allowed to play. How dare any GM allow his pitcher to pitch. Now he can't pitch the first couple games of the next series!! I can't believe some of you are OK with Sale being babied like this when other big leaguers have to take the mound tonight! Injury history?
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 06:54 PM) I hope Sale is so pissed at Cooper and Ventura for making a big deal out of this. He should be FURIOUS. He knows his body. This team is four under and KC 18 over. Yeah that's sure a big series coming up ... NOT. Sale should be so mad at this joke of an organization. Pitching Saturday then Tuesday is a big deal??? Why not just shut him down a month so he doesn't get hurt? Players rarely "know their body" that's why they get hurt.
  16. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 08:38 PM) Is this list limited to post 1950 guys? Even then it's not close. Aparicio, Fox, Pierce ....... I'm one of Harold's biggest fans but he is not in the top 4, neither is Konerko. Were pitchers not included?
  17. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 07:11 AM) Winston-Salem Dash ‏@WSDashBaseball 13h13 hours ago Nate Jones' 2nd rehab appearance: 4-3 GO Infield 1B 4-6-3 DP 9 pitches, 7 strikes. Once again, he hovered around 100 mph with his fastball. Hopefully, he can stay like that. Command was always his issue. Maybe they smoothed the mechanics a bit due to the injuries.
  18. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 11:49 AM) This is why MLB teams have minors league affiliates. To help players learn, make adjustments and allow players to progress at their own pace while under the watchful eye of the major league teams FO. Jumping from college ball to the majors is a huge hurdle. Fulmer will not be a starter for the Sox this season due to his inning totals so far this year and he is not needed in the pen. Another thing to keep in mind is Fulmer's season started in mid February which means he likely started throwing around the first of the year to prepare for his last season in college. It's already been a long season for the young man so it would be best to see how he fairs against tougher competition in the minors while monitoring his innings. Fulmer's progression should be determined by Fulmer's performance and not by others that came before him or overly eager fans and FO that do not want to wait. Patience. I'm not saying which way is better. There are choices. If the Sox feel his pitching is beyond the minors, he would benefit fit from exposure to MLB hitters. No amount of time in the minors will get you the same experience of facing MLB hitters. There is that step from AAA to MLB that is it's own hurdle. If they feel his is at the AAA level, it may make more sense to go to the MLB earlier. The innings limit is another story. They may pitch him a few games to see him in person then shut him down. After the sox see him pitch they will decide if time in the minors is needed or if it's more like Sale and Rodon where his learning needs to be at the MLB level.
  19. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 09:46 PM) No need to start the clock on him this year, give me the extra year of control everytime Not at the expense for learning. Look at it this way. The sox may have one less year of control but they get one more year of an effective pitcher in the mlb.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 05:37 PM) I agree. Can any person convince me why it is a good idea to pitch Danks in Game Two of that DH? What you do is go with Shark and Sale and see if just maybe you can stick it up the Royals' backsides and win the DH. Now you are guaranteeing a loss in Game Two and one of their lefties just might connect off Shark. You are right, though. It ultimately is a charade, we don't have the team this year. I did think we might want to go with our top guns one final series to see if we can knock off the Royals and maybe contend for a WC. This is such a dumb move, I do question the common sense of Coop/Robin. And this is coming from a Danks lover like me. I truly love the guy. Danks will need to pitch one of the games in the series. Why does it matter which one ? Sale will have pitched in the AS game. Give him an extra day or so.
  21. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 01:39 PM) The Sox have depth in the pen now and for 2016 so theres zero point in bringing up Fulmer this year and maybe even next. If the Sox really believe Fulmer will be a starter then keep him in the minors to get used to pitching in a five man rotation. If at some point during the 2016 season Fulmer shows he is ready then call him up. Otherwise let him get used to starting every fifth game and build up his innings. Fulmer should not be called up until he's ready, period. There are advantages to bringing him up this year if they think he is ready. 1. Get him used to the mlb coaches. 2. Get him used to the routine. 3. Expose him to mlb hitters to start the learning process.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 01:39 AM) Exactly. If KC wins 3 or 4 I'd expect the Sox to act immediately ... finally in terms of trade(s). We should have traded him 3 weeks ago. The fact he has only 1/2 a year or less is the Sox's fault. With our luck, they'll go 2-2 against KC somehow and think they're in the WC race. Actually there's no way they can split with KC so it'll be interesting to see what happens after the 1-3 or 0-4 series. They are waiting too long if they wait for all 3 series. I guess if they split with KC they could be forgiven by most fans for staying pat a little longer, but I want action. I think you are right. Like one poster said the offense is too lousy to be a WC contender. I have a sneaky feeling Saladino is not more than a .200 MLB hitter just like our second baseman. Teams weren't looking to trade at that point. Teams were and still are trying to decide if they are in it and how much that want to trade for it. Was any team making trades at that point? Even if they did try to trade him, the point is still the same. He is a free agent at the end of the year and the Sox will not get as much for him. You are just going out of your way to tear apart anything they do or don't do. Action for the sake of action generally leads to poor long term solutions.
  23. QUOTE (BigFinn @ Jul 12, 2015 -> 09:36 PM) Adam LaRoche's batting splits for 2014 from Baseball Reference: 1st Half:.279/.383/.457 (BA/OBP/SLG) 2nd Half: .236/.336/.453 Fangraphs suggests that Jose Abreu as a better fielder at first base than Adam LaRoche. LaRoche is here to paper over the fact that the Sox organization does't have any LH power in the pipeline. Here is a summary of our offensive woes using OPS+ (thru Saturday's game): OPS+ Player Starters 136 Jose Abreu 103 Adam LaRoche 101 Avisail Garcia 99 Adam Eaton 90 Tyler Flowers 86 Melky Cabrera 82 Conor Gillaspie 64 Gordon Beckham 56 Alexei Ramirez 31 Carlos Sanchez Bench 97 Geovanny Soto 94 JB Son Beckham 83 Micah Johnson 55 Tyler Saladino 1 Emilio Bonifacio Looking at the raw data, I could see the Sox playing Soto more frequently than Flowers over the next 2-3 weeks. Although Alexei Ramirez is showing some signs of life over the last 2 weeks (.306/.342/.361) and I like what I've seen from Tyler Saladino during the Cubs series, the White Sox need to find some help for catcher and the left side of the infield. Soto will not play more than Flowers as the pitchers very comfortable throwing to Flowers.
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 12, 2015 -> 04:11 PM) White Sox have been on a run that last 2-3 weeks based mostly on pitching and improved defense. Despite a few here frustrated with Sanchez hitting, he has stabilized the D and I see no evidence that he will be replaced by Micah Johnson any time in the near future. Gillaspie is seeing less and less time because of his D . Bonifacio is barely used because he hasn't hit or fielded well in his opportunities. Beckham has fielded well and got some big hits but overall pretty much we we always get or worse from him. Management seems to have adjusted slightly on the fly, perhaps on the urging on Ventura and his pitchers, using Sanchez and now Saladino to plug holes defensively . Of course it's not so easy to fix the hitting which remains a huge disappointment. Will the Sox trade Samardzija ? Are Bonifacio and Gillaspie on the hot seat to be released/traded ? If Samardzija is traded do the Sox also trade LaRoche or some bullpen pieces considering Jones may return along with Albers ? If Samardzija is kept do the Sox trade once again from the minors further depleting any talent they do have down on the farm in an effort is get a more productive offense ? The 4 game series at home against KC after the ASB should give the Sox one last chance to show they can do better within the division since that will probably be the key to moving up in the standings . Frankly I think holding onto Shark would be an epic failure. The Cubs got a boatload for him . Oakland got 3 ML ready players from us plus another player that fit Oaklands style . I don't expect 4 players but should be at least one guy who looks like a decent prospect or more if Shark is packaged with a bullpen arm. don't expect as much of a return this year. He only has 1/2 a year for the next team. Also, the players traded may have been MLB ready but they had serious flaws. They weren't really highly regarded prospects.
  25. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 12, 2015 -> 03:42 PM) Reasons might include he's been brutal. Yep, that could be one. There may be others, who knows.
