  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 12:07 AM) I feel like this deal isn't true and espn messed up It does seem too good.
  2. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 12:00 AM) SportsCenterVerified account ‏@SportsCenter BREAKING: A's trade Jeff Samardzija to White Sox for Marcus Semien, Trayce Thompson & Chris Beck. Holy crap. That is stealing from the A's.
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:32 PM) I t hink he can multi-task and talk to a few gms at once. I told you he can work on more than one deal at a time.
  4. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:29 PM) I agree. I would think Hahn would want to get this done ASAP, so he could work on the next deal fresh tomorrow morning, and not think about it all night and then wake up tomorrow to "Well, Cherington sent me a text last night offering Jackie Bradley Jr. and Raunado, so I've got to go with his offer" or some s***. I mean, it's not even 10 pm there yet. I t hink he can multi-task and talk to a few gms at once.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:24 PM) Whoa.. mlb network has been talking about the white sox for over 3 minutes now. Not only that but gave them a compliment andsaid they would be contenders for the division.
  6. Nightingale on mlb just said that the deal right now is semien and a minor league piece.
  7. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:54 PM) Yeah, we're comparing to the "average replacement" player, which means that lots of replacements will be better or worse than 0 WAR. I think the main thing about WAR that is counterintuitive is just that it's not going to give any one player a ton of credit for winning a game. You're not going to play so well in a single that game that you get anything close to 1 WAR. But, in our minds, we might be thinking, "this game was won by THIS guy." But WAR says no, all kinds of other guys had to not f*** up to make that possible so they get some measure of credit (even if credit = not being docked WAR). But it also seeks to remove context, so that if Clayton Kershaw played for teams that aren't nearly as good, we still can compare him to players that are on great teams. Pitching WAR is a little more debatable. Over small sample sizes, including at the level of a single season, FIP-based WAR is generally more accurate. Over longer stretches, though, RA/9-WAR is better...you can think of that as an ERA-based WAR. I usually look at both. Actually from my analysis of various stats I like SIERA for pitching. It relyydoes the best job of isolating the pitcher's responsibility for runs scored which really what is all about.
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) Lets look at this another way, Kershaw was 21-3 with a WAR of 7.5. Did the average starter who made as few starts as Kershaw, did the average replacement level starter win that many games? I know there are other aspects that contribute but then go as far as the average winning percentage, etc. I don't know the answer just posing the thought. However, I'd also point out that you can't just add WAR's and say that is how many more games you will actually win. I know you just can't add WAR. This is also part of the problem as its too abstract. You also cannot use the average players as it doesn't pertain to the average player When the cimment was used it was said that lester couldn't provide 15-20 more wns because kershaw only had a 7 WAR. So this would assume lester woud take the place of the cubs worst or 5 starter not even an average starter Anyway this is discussion for another day.
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:40 PM) I would venture to guess that WAR has more correlation to actual wins than any other statistic I really can't see that. Supposedly WAR looks at "just another guy" that can be acquired but not an average. Kershaw is only 7 wins better than him and that is the top in the game? Sorry to derail the discussion Ill stop but using WAR as the only justification to refute a comment whenit is so abstract always irks me.
  10. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:34 PM) 5-7 pitching wins? I have no idea, because pitching wins are largely random. Quintana had a 5.3 WAR last season and had 9 pitching wins. Eric Stultz had a -0.6 WAR last season and had 8 pitching wins. They don't have any impact or correlation to WAR. Exactly, so the WAR is abtract enough that how will you know if it actually is a good thing to help your team. So how does a GM build a team based on something that has no correlation to actual wins. Especially when the elusive replacement player doesn't exist either.
  11. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:26 PM) If that #5 pitcher has a 0 WAR all season and is considered replacement value. And 0 WAR would be what? 5 wins 7 wins?
  12. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 10:15 PM) What Dempster just described is not an ace, it's whatever superlative is used to a player who has a season 2-3x that of what Clayton Kershaw and his measly 7 WAR produced last season. I realize he doesn't know he just suggested that, but saying a single player will add "xxx" amount of wins to your team is just asking for WAR to be used to evaluate your assertion. This is where WAR loses its value. Does it say that kershaw would only contribute 7 more wins than the #5 starter from the white sox? So when your average 5 starter only goes 5 7nnings and kershaw averages 7, he doesn't save the pen and more wins because better pitchers pitch more often.
  13. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) Umm he is a lefty 2B I thought hewas abbreviating michalczewski as someone rumored him in the trade. I didn't see the rumor of johnson. Iwould MUCH rather keep johnson and trade semien.
  14. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:53 PM) Micah is actually the one I think we could end up regretting trading, more so Semien. Agreed. Potential switch hitting 3B.
  15. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) Plus if Hahn does get to trade Danks to say PIT, that saves money for a guy like Masterson or a bullpen piece. Sale Quintana Samardzija Masterson Bassitt/Noesi My previous scenario was based on Noesi going in the trade as someone speculated.
  16. QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:42 PM) Couldn't we still sign a guy like Masterson? Shark will not take up much of payroll unless we sign him long term. That works too. I was just stating it, if the sox put the rest of their resources into the pen or LF
  17. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) Dealing Noesi doesn't do much for us. You do upgrade that spot in the rotation A LOT, but now the Sox would have a major hole at the #5 Sale Q JS Danks Bassitt/rodon I'm good with that.
  18. QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:33 PM) Sounds good...we'll have to stop for food though. Getting pretty hungry right about now. Deal. Now if we can get Beane to fall for this deal. Hopefully we can keep bassitt. I was impressed when I saw one of his starts in person
  19. QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:30 PM) My new Ford Focus doesnt have a windshield I can see through right now unfortunately I'll pick you up on the way if you really want to help.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 08:21 PM) They can hop in my Impala, and I will have them to ORD in no time. Got the brand new Cadillac cts on remote start ready to go.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) If John Danks were a free agent, what would you expect him to sign for? He hasn't thrown 200 innings since 2010. He hasn't had an era under 4.00 since 2010, even in the partial seasons. His velocity never has recovered. His 2014 was actually lower for average velocity than the year after his surgery. I was on the Danks bandwagon for a while, but the guy has no value, at all. He had the nice flash at the end of the season after some mechanical changes, but I sure wouldn't be willing to pay anything of significance for that after his last four years. I think this was due to the increased volume of innings and he wore down. I fully expect all of this to increase. However, as a GM I wouldn't offer much because there is no guarantee.
  22. Otherwise it can be painful.
  23. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 06:11 PM) One has to wonder how many of these rumors are true at this point. Is there anybody we are NOT interested in? If they are a decent bullpen arm, the Sox are interested.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) Part of this is me being difficult, but it feels like a worthwhile discussion. Some of it may be a moot point because who knows if the Sox trade for Samardzija or who they trade to get him. I agee. It is worthwhile.
  25. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) If the White Sox are an example to follow, that's not exactly true anymore either. Seems to me that in the past 10 years, the Sox have had several front of the rotation starters but only had one above average 2B during that entire time frame in Tadahito Iguchi. People saying that it's easy or that it's not as important have yet to really win me over with that argument. Frankly, if Semien is dealt, the Sox are looking at Carlos Sanchez and Micah Johnson as the internal candidates at 2B. Those two were both less than impressive at both AAA and the MLB, depending on where either ended up. All we can say at this point is we'll see. I think the Sox are the exception to the rule. They have had a awful record developing hitters of any postion not even poor but awful.
