QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 16, 2014 -> 06:28 PM) Danks has nothing yet again. Huh, Danks gave up as many runs as Buherle yet pitched deeper into the game.

The point is moot. The Sox have never and will never hit soft tossing lefties well.

Harrelson, predictably, taken to task by media
ptatc replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 11:40 AM) Everyone knows the kind of talk that goes on in NBA/NFL/MLB clubhouses. Just read all the transcripts from the Dolphins' situation with Ignito and Martin...that's just touching the surface, undoubtedly. Or remember Beckham calling Getz "gay" written in the dirt? All that stuff with Ozzie and Mariotti? However, just because Harrelson was/is around that kind of talk, IN THE CLUBHOUSE...doesn't mean he shouldn't make some type of effort NOT to do it, or we should simply accept the excuse "that's just the way he is, he'll never change, etc." He can at least TRY. I don't recall him ever doing it before so maybe he does try and it slipped out just this once. -
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) Love baseball but I'd stop watching MLB as I'd feel betrayed. I could see that. I would probably go to more minor league games. But I couldn't stop watching baseball entirely.

"Relic" Reinsdorf takes a direct shot from Passan
ptatc replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/rob-manfred-w...-233553559.html The article refers to Reinsdorf and his plans a "rich guy" politics and billionaire myopia." Does he realize that all of the owners are rich guys or corporations? He also refers to Reinsdorf as old school and out of date. Reinsdorf want a salary cap. Last I checked this is a new idea that all other professional sports have adopted. The cost control on salaries may be why the other leagues like basketball and NFL are passing the MLB by. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) Im curious if any of the few Expos fans continued to follow the Nationals. Good point. I know 1 that did and 2 that didn't. The 2 that didn't switched to Toronto to stay with a Canadian team.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) I've been a Sox fan for over 40 years now but if ownership decided to remove the team from Chicago, my interest in the team would be removed as well. For me, following the cubs is not an option and seeing as how I'm looking to move to Colorado in the next few years anyway I would refocus my attention on the Rockies and never look back. Those are my retirement plans so I would probably do that as well once I got there.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) If twenty years from now, the average age of a baseball fan is closer to 33-43 and not 53-73, then the commissioner will have pulled off an amazing trick. Gammons said it this morning....about baseball being too focused on promoting the history of the game and ties to the past, while NBA and NFL is all about superstars and action figures. With Jeter leaving the game, guys like Trout, Stanton, Puig, Kershaw, Abreu, Sale, McCutchen, Cabrera, etc., have to be promoted much more effectively and strategically. A lot of the momentum from the World Baseball Classic has stopped....how are they going to continue to build up revenue streams from Mexico/Caribbean/Venezuela? Brazil? Colombia? Central America? With the distance to China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan being a prohibitive hindrance, how to continue to expand in the Asian market, besides just simulcasting games over satellite? Will Million Dollar Arm move the meter AT ALL in India? Unfortunately, I think this is the way they need to go. I'm old and I prefer the team promotion as opposed to the individual, however for marketing and the younger generations, this seems to be the preference.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 06:50 AM) How many Manfred Mann jokes do you think have been made since the vote last night? I'm pretty sure most of them have a form of "blinded by the light" in them Springsteen! Can't let that go without a reference to the Boss. Especially since baseball has a new Boss but he isn't the Boss.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 05:05 PM) Hurts right at the top of the kneecap where I'm holding it and under the kneecap. That's more the patella femoral pain then. Follow the exercise program. I stated earlier in the thread for greg775. He has a similar issue. You need to get the pressure out from under the patella. The exercises will for lack of a better way to explain, help the patella to track better. -
I'm surprised how many people said they would stop watching baseball if they moved. Are there that many fans of the team that really aren't fans of the game in general? As for myself, I remember thinking about this when they almost moved to Tampa. I would still be a fan of the Sox but probably only go to local minor league games.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 04:48 PM) And yet most football games only have 3-4 minutes of ACTUAL action. Yes, but wagering on football with a point spread is much easier. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) I will go on record as disagreeing with you both. Fales will be the #3 quarterback on the team. They drafted him to develop him not to play this year. -
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) Ah, like how they wear skirts in softball He was referring to collisions. No one has a sense of humor anymore.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 05:09 PM) When was the last time a broadcaster angrily and sarcastically referred to players wearing skirts? I'm going to guess 1955. In this case it's somewhat appropriate. This implies playing sports like females. In collision sports such as hockey or lacrosse there is far less hitting because the rules dictate that hitting is less tolerated. So if the new rules dictate less hitting. It is more like the female version of these sports. Sorry for the sarcastic humor. This game really makes me angry at the game of baseball, which I truly love to watch.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) I think Hawk is embarrassing himself. I'm not referring to this particular tag play The difference between "the good old days" and today is that medical science knows a lot more about the longterm effects of concussions on the brain. There's, you know, a lot of guys committing suicide because of it. He said (paraphrasing) "what, are they gonna turn football into a girls' game?" He said that out loud and it was broadcast on TV. This has nothing to do with it. The rule was put in because Posey fractured his ankle on a collision. Concussion had nothing to do with it.

Tony Stewart purposefully ran someone over?
ptatc replied to Steve9347's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) Neither do baseball teams, but that doesn't stop anyone on Soxtalk from knowing more than anyone in the organization about how a club should be ran. True again but at least most "people" on this site have seen a few baseball games. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) And it's fairly common to sit a guy before an off day so he gets two full days of rest, but I guess the Sox playoff hopes depend on every single game so Abreu must play. It's not like he isn't hitting. I think his ave. and OBP have been going up recently. Maybe pitchers are adjusting to him and he is in the middle of an adjustment period.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) Yes, but everybody it talking as if they are experts on how NASCAR should deal with the situation and how they shouldn't let their drivers drive at dirt tracks, etc. NASCAR has done a pretty good job of growing their sport in the last 20 years and doesn't need advice from the peanut gallery. True. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) you say that like its a bad thing? Hey, what's wrong with watching people make many left turns and drive in circles for a couple of hours. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) I think "When the announcing team calls out how he looks at the plate, whether from exhaustion or injury, it is an appropriate time to give him a day off" is a reasonable standard to me. They've done it twice this year. The last time, he played until he couldn't walk. That's why I'm calling this out now. It's time again. That was due to an injury not just because he was tired. Don't get me wrong, he could probably use a couple of "mental days" but the two scenarios aren't the same.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) And would you say playing while over-tired could also have negative effects? Of course, but what does that have to do with taking aspirin?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) This is a hilarious thread. My guess from reading all of this is that none of you have ever watched more than 2-3 NASCAR races in your life, if any. Yes, you caught me. Never been a racing fan. By the way, this happened at short track, dirt track which is really different than NASCAR. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) It's like taking medicine. When your doctor advises you to take an aspirin a day, he might complain if you don't. He might also complain if you take a thousand aspirin in a day. Those complaints are just the doctor complaining about something and should be ignored. Maybe because one isn't enough to take effect and 1000 can destroy your liver. These should not be ignored.
