QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 10:12 PM) Fantastic deal for Jed and Theo. I disagree. It really risky trading away MLB pitching for hitting suspects no matter how good they may be. It's probably a good deal when you need to factor in how they will acquire any pitching. Although they will get the best pitcher in next year's draft now

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 12:28 PM) I'm guessing this was Hawkins' first concussion. While it's true that only one can mess you up, 99.9% of the time you're fine so long as you let it recover. Morneau had 100 when he was in hockey as a teen. That number isn't exactly, but it's a number that is not in binary code. The other thing to look at is vision problems. These can change it as well.

I found the SOB. It was in a fake microsoft named file. It was sitting in the middle of a bunch of microsoft folders on the C: drive.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 11:20 AM) That seems very odd as we don't have any pop-up adds. Only ads that exist are the one at the top, slighltly below the navigation banner. Might need to clear your cache. I think one of the kids downloaded a free game and it came with the ads program. There is now another spot above the top banner ad from the same group. I just can't figure out where the program is and how to delete it.

Supreme Court strikes blow to public sector unions

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) I'm not sure how it works in Illinois, but I don't think you're required to actually join the union necessarily. The union can still collect some amount of fees from you for services rendered on your behalf, though. When they're negotiating the IT dept. contract, they're representing everyone. If you have a grievance, they'll represent you even if you're not a member. In return, in non-RTW states, they can collect some amount of money from you because of that. It's less than full union dues and excludes political funding. This is how it works. You pay dues and are represented by the union but don't need to join. The only reason to join is to vote on union issues such as contract approval or strikes. Everyone pays the same regatdless as you are still represented and are part of the negotiating body and get the advantages or disadvantages of the negotiated contract. -
QUOTE (spiderman @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 05:55 AM) Is he going to be able to play the field or will they just DH him? If so, Adam Dunn would need to be moved. If that's the case, they are sellers (which is likely the end result) and caution could end up being the best course of action for Garcia. There would be no reason that he couldn't play in the field.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 29, 2014 -> 10:53 PM) Recovering from a torn labrum is not something you want to push. Pitchers are instructed to start at 80% throwing after 3-6 months of recovery. That being said, I don't see why he couldn't DH to end the year. The labrum has much less bearing (if any) on Garcia at the plate as it does on his throwing ability. I would love for him to be able to DH the last month if he were cleared by the medical staff. EDIT: When I made the post, I wasn't thinking of the affect the broken shoulder could have on his return. I know next to nothing on the return process of a broken shoulder. The surgery was on his non-throwing shoulder I thought. The fractured would have healed a long time ago and he would be farther behind if they thought it would impact the repair. The problem he will have is that the left shoulder will need to go from a fully horizontallly flexed position (across his body) to a horizontally extended position (away from his body). So he will extend the full range of the capsule and "grind" on the labrum. The repair will need to be tight enough for support and loose enough for the range. It will also depend on the extent of the damage to the long head of the biceps tendon and what they needed to do there. Overall,if it's healed and has the full range, which I'm assuming he does as they are going to let him hit, as soon as the strength returns he should be good to go. It will just depnds on when it will be strong enough to handle the violent motion of the swing.

In the past week, i have been getting ads from suprasaving ads that show up in the middle of the threads and off to the bottom left. They are videos that play and slow down everything. They happen everytime I click on anything on this website only. Any ideas on how to stop them?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 29, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) "Marquette" is an old Native American term for "Notre Dame wait listed" Well at least they had enough balls to keep some native american reference! -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 10:08 PM) But what I am saying is they still had roles. They had an idea before each game when they were coming in. It may have changed an inning with the injuries, but they still had roles. The problem is the pitchers in the bullpen aren't very good. Some waiver claims, some non tenders. Definitely. As I said before. The defined roles, comfort zone idea cannot make a bad pitcher good. however, it can take an average or good pitcher and make him lose confidence and be worse. It has a lot to do with the mental make up of eilte athletes. If you want to talk about other sports track athletes are even worse on an elite level.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) They still had reasonably defined roles when Beli was the closer. They just couldn't handle them. I really don't know why it would freak a major league pitcher out coming in during tje 8th inning vs. the 7th, but if it does, that isn't a guy you want on your roster moving forward. The game will dictate when these guys come in anyway. It's not so much the 7th vs. the 8th. Those are the "set up roles." It's more who is the first guys up, which could be the 5-7, who is the set up guys, who are the specialists and who is the closer. I don't necessarily disagree with the concept. I'm just saying that is the way it works in MLB bullpens. I've been around 2 different ones on a daily basis and that is the way it is and how it's explained. When I worked in the minors this is how they are instructed to prepare to come into the game. It's all about making sure they are properly prepared and can last for the full season, both physically and mentally.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 08:12 PM) I haven't heard the players say it either, but it comes up around here constantly NOT as a byproduct (as you described), but as some sort of solution. Such as caulfield's post that spawned my original tantrum: The solution to our bullpen issues is to have better players, not to find a mystical order in which to line our current players up. The goal is always to have better pitchers. However, the better pitchers will also pitch better with confidence and comfort in the roles. Whether people want to believe it or not, these are people and they will perform better in comfortable situations. Even if it's in their own mind, it's what they think. Baseball players are people of routines and habit, usually superstitions as well. There is an order where people feel more comfortable and roles where players feel more comfortable. It applies to hitters as well. Why do some hitters hit better in a different spot in the order? All they have to do is hit the ball wherever they are? People will perform better at anything in life when the are comfortable and confident. That's not to say it can't work differently but that's usually when you get the most out of them. It can't make a bad player good, but it can make an average to good player worse.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 07:14 PM) Right, because they're getting people out. When they fail though, "well I need a defined role" isn't an excuse. That's my point. You can't have a defined role when you can't be relied upon. No, it's that. There is always failure in the pen. It's when it happens over time and nobody is effective is the only time that it comes into play. I've never heard an individual player use it as an excuse when he pitched poorly. you only see it when the entire pen is ineffective and no one has that role. It's not an excuse for failure individually as frequently you have players moved in an out. It's just that when you have effective bullpens they need to have confidence in their role. When everyone is pitching poorly there is no confidence anywhere. Do you have confidence and go pitch well or do you have to pitch well before you have confidence. There is a little of both to make an effective pitcher and an effective staff.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) Boom You will only see this when the bullpen is ineffective. An effective bullpen will have the defined roles. With the way they are pitching now it doesn't matter what you do.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Can someone make a chart with all the relievers and the innings they should pitch? If roles being change wreaks havoc on the rest of the bullpen, how come no one mentioned that when they said it was such a great idea to trade Addison Reed? I'm sure they did. I think the plan was Jones , 9th, Linstrom, Belly 8th, Downs situational lefty.........
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 04:13 PM) Then they should be mentally prepared to go in. But over 6 months of doing that you will wear them down. They will be worn out by the end of the season. 90% of the game is half mental as Berra used to say.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) It's not realistic to be able to plan every single inning of every single day out for a RP. If "be ready to pitch between 8 and 10 on game days" is too much for someone to handle, they don't belong in the major leagues. If children can do it for fun, the world's best adults should be able to do it for millions of dollars. Yes, it is realistic and that is what they do. Before the games the pitching staff and usually the pitching coach will go over the bullpen plan. Today so and so will go in with a lefty in a tight situation. If we need a guy before the 6th, so and so will go in. Jeff you have the 8th unless it's a blowout. This is discussed before every series at least and usally before games in the pen. If it changes due to something else in a game the bullpen coach will talk to the players in the game. Again, i'm just telling you how they do it and why it's important. This is what happens in the MLB and why they don't like the change. It's mostly mental but that is how you get the most out of the pitchers. If they aren't comfortably mentally, you aren't going to get the most out of them.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Good, they're professional athletes. They should be ready to play during games, just like other bench players. My point is it isn't like they blow their arms throwing to prepare. Yes, they have a greater chance to injure their arms. They are not like bench players who know they will pinch hit if a lefty comes in (although that is defined as well). Pitchers in the pen will not be as effective if they aren't mentally prepared to go in.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) How do you know this? It's an excuse. None of us "needed" this in little league, High School, or American Legion when I played. We all did just fine. If you've ever spent time in an MLB pen or locker room you would see it ins't true. It is all mental but this is how MLB players cope with alll the failure. It's all in the routine and they do not like it when they routine is upset. You didn't need it at age because 1) the workload isn't there and 2) the talent isn't there. The really good players didn't need it because they were playing inferior talent and the inferior players didn't need it because they weren't very good anyway. This is the learning process in the minors. They aren't learning the "game" of baseball. They are learning how to deal with the massive amount of failure and the long season grind.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 01:27 PM) No, you warm up when they call to the bullpen and ask you to warm up. but that's not what they do. They start with the stretching and therband work well before they begin to throw other wise no one would be ready for over an inning once they are called. It's not like they do nothing until they call to the pen.
