  1. QUOTE (G&T @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) They also host baseball camps all summer so the place is teeming with people from NYC. Finding a place to stay won't be easy and actually seeing anything will be even harder. Still cool though. Make the trip to ommegang if you go. One of my favorite breweries. Definitely, worth it while you are there.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 02:06 PM) If everyone is allowed to "vote however they damn well please," how is taking a poll for your vote any sort of infraction? Gurick decided he wanted his vote to make some asinine personal statement, Le Batard decided he wanted his vote to reflect the opinion of the fans. Right. He voted the opinion of the fans, not his opinion. I can see why his vote was taken away. Gurick voted his personal statement. I agree is was asinine but it was still his reason not a different person or group of people as Le Batard did. He basically put the vote up for sale as a publicity stunt or he really didn't care. Either way I can see why they revoked it.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) I do too, I don't think it was wrong at all. I think these people who vote for 1 or 2 in a class like this are absolute moron pieces of s***. Merely stating that, in the eyes of the BBWAA, if they view LeBatard in the wrong, they should view these other guys too. It's wrong on just the basic premise of voting. He didn't vote for who he wanted, he voted for who others wanted. People may have a dumb rational for why they voted but at least it was for who they thought deserved it.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 12:37 PM) Fine. Then admit it, and use it as a bully pulpit for changing the ballot. I agree. I think it is a stupid reason as you should just vote for your top 10 and not manipulate the vote (maybe hehas Illinois roots). I'm just stating what someone said was their rationale.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:21 AM) Not from what I have always understood. The big thing that stuff is good for is quicker recovery from work outs and injuries. When you do get injuries it is more of the kid that results from your body not being able to handle the muscles you got. Griffey always seemed like a nagging something, or an playing field injury. There is some anecdotal evidence that steroids caused tendon and bone-tendon injuries. The theory is that the muscles are so abnormally strong that the other tissues can't handle it. Some examples were the chronic tendonitis in McGwire which included knee, ankle and elbow,. The weirdest one was Tim Krumrie (sp?) a DL for the Bengals. He fractured his leg running with no contact. Again these are just speculation but you do see a fair amount of it.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) So 15 of the 16 who didn't vote for Maddux won't admit to it. This coming from the group whose job it is to report on things. That makes sense. I heard one person theorize that some did it because they knew Maddux would get in so he saved his vote for one of the more borderline candidates. His complaint was the limit of 10 players for which he could vote.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) I don't recall his delivery being noticeably different now versus any time in the past. Any video evidence or something to gnaw on? I was watching pretty close last year to see if his motion changed after surgery and I didn't notice much. However, I was watching mostly shoulder and elbow position and wasn't really paying attention to his wrist/hand.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 19h Justin Verlander underwent core muscle repair surgery, injuring himself in December workouts. The #Tigers expect him to be ready for season Verlander will "undergo physical rehabilitation for the next six weeks and will be reevaluated at the end of that time," Tigers say. Justin Verlander’s streak of Opening Day starts obviously in jeopardy. He will be in rehab mode until 1 week after spring training begins. Tigers say Justin Verlander should be ready to participate "in" spring training; release did not say "the start of" spring training. They must have talked with the Red Wings medical staff for the press release. What in the heck do they mean by a "core muscle?" It's really odd to have surgery on abdominal muscles for tears.
  9. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 11:49 PM) Biggio has really gotten f***ed by all this steroid era hoopla. I know why Palmerio and Rose aren't in the hall, but 3,000 hits and doing it the way Biggio did should have been first ballot status. And then he gets forgotten about the next year because it was such a stacked class. And things don't get any easier next either with Randy, Pedro, Smoltz, and Sheffield being added to the list. Whats Sheffield's status with PED suspicion? Sheffield will also not get the benefit of the doubt due to his personality. He made Bonds look like Konerko.
  10. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 04:37 AM) Seems kind of pointless, tbh. I don't think anyone disapproves of the job Hahn's done. Trading established MLB pitching for prospects can lead to disaster. I wouldn't say disapprove but it's definitely risky. If these guys don't play well, you can really set a team back.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Almost all closely held corps have a right of first refusal. My understanding is that JR is the only one in the group that has this option even though he is not the majority shareholder. I'm not a business guy so I'm not sure if that is common or not.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) [/b] I believe I remember hearing that is where he started, but as partners have wanted out over the years, he has bought up many other shares of the team. Can anyone confirm or deny? JR has the option to buy out anybody before they sell the shares to someone else. He has slowly increased his holding in the group.
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 04:47 PM) DC and Denver have it better than us out of the cities I travel to extensively. Our transit system is old and very one-dimensional. Back in the day the green line west and the El south were the two earliest lines on the city transit system, and both havent expanded since the early 1900's. In a city with such horrible traffic and road conditions they should invest in a more uni-directional transit system while eliminating the dual station format downtown. While at the same time giving us high speed options to nearby cities like St Louis, Detroit and Minneapolis. I envision a system where there is a Hub OUTSIDE of Chicago where multiple lines can converge and allow passengers to travel between suburbs without having to go back into the city. At least in my perfect world. The tube in Boston is a much more user friendly system than Chicago's.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) So some performance enhancing drugs are OK, just as long as they weren't too strong? When voting for the HOF, yes. Otherwise as I said nobody would go in. This is just my opinion, because andro really isn't a performance enhancer and amphetamines just helped you focus a little more.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) Which is why it's stupid that the voters are trying to play judge jury executioner with all the PEDs. I disagree. The amphetamines and andro do not have the same effect as anabolic steroids. If you want to go with the strcit route than nobody should be in the HOF including Thomas. I will wager that he used amphetamines at one point or another. It's best to separate the steroids from the others as that is where the difference was made. Bonds, Sosa and McGwire did not hit those HR's on the back of amphetamines. Edit: What Jake said.
  16. QUOTE (Real @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 07:49 AM) that's...... fine, but it doesn't refute anything I said androstenedione is a PED, has always been, same with amphetamines they weren't always banned substances but that isn't what was said what was said was "piazza never used PEDs", which is 100% false My point was, if you put amphetamines and andro in the same category as anabolic steroids than not only did Piazza use PEDs but almost everyone did.
  17. QUOTE (Real @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) it's in his book for cryin out loud http://metsblog.com/news/mike-piazza/mike-...-upcoming-book/ he also admits to using amphetamines, another PED dude was doing everything in his power to boost his game 80-90% of all players before the drug testing started used amphetamines. It was readily available in the coffee in every clubhouse.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) Except for the fact they already blew a ton of money on the last empty parking garage. That's government and politics. Usually can't get out of their own way. I know that part of the city they do not want empty run down buildings so it doesn't surprise me that they would do something like this.

    It's cold outside

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) A whole bunch of people threw boiling water into the air to watch it freeze and burned themselves. Even my 12 year old boy got it right when he tried. I weep for humanity. This is why I don't trust people to get anything right,.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) The 2014 HOF Ballot Collecting Gizmo! Updated: Jan.7 - 1:35 ~ 155 Full Ballots ~ (27.2% of vote ~ based on last year) 99.4 - Maddux 96.1 - Glavine 92.3 - F. Thomas 78.7 - Biggio ——————————— 69.0 - Piazza 61.3 - Bagwell 60.0 - Jack (The Jack) Morris 56.1 - Raines 41.3 - Bonds 40.6 - Clemens 38.1 - Schilling 29.7 - Mussina 24.5 - E. Martinez 24.5 - L. Smith 23.9 - Trammell 14.8 - Kent 14.2 - McGriff 9.7 - L. Walker 9.7 - McGwire 7.7 - S. Sosa 5.8 - R. Palmeiro 5.8 - Mattingly ——————————— 0.6 - P. Rose (Write-In) I wonder if it's the drug problems keeping Raines out.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) Yeah, I get that, but for me that stands out as the time that the numbers on the offensive side really changed. The rookie HR record was just destroyed at that point. 40HRs became the new 25. Agreed. But if you remember from the Canseco book, PEDs had nothing to do with the record. Canseco introduced McGwire to PEDs after all that occurred, after he was in the MLB.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 08:02 AM) Not player movement but no other catch-all. This is another case where the city will make money on the taxes from parking, tickets, concession and since it's soccer fines from the police arresting all of the people fighting in the stands.
  23. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) Check this article out: http://www.sfgate.com/sports/kroichick/art...ids-2637503.php Tom House says he was doing it in the 70's The reason is wasn't as effective was that they didn't lift weights back then. He though it would increase endurance and probably did a little. However, without the added workouts the PEDs wouldn't have the same effect.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) For me it really seemed to happen with the 1987 rookie race. What happened that year blew away everything that had happened before it in all MLB history. While Canseco and few were using then, it really wasn't until the early to mid-90's that it became wide spread. In the mid-80's most players were just beginning to lift weights. That is why the actucal time is blurred.
