QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 5, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) More bribery than Russia? Is that possible? That's what the USOC seems to be worried about for athlete safety.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 12:19 PM) Really? Are they worried about terrorism in Rio or just more local violence like robberies/muggings, etc? Because I think Russia is a much larger concern, they have shown no fear to kill large amounts of people in public places before. Mostly just general crime and security. However it's a big concern. They don't trust the local group to provide the security. Big concerns of bribery.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 5, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Apparently, the referees are not allowed to call defensive penalties on the Packers. Packers defenders can only tackle prior to the pass.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) Wasn't there some article written years ago which pointed to the zits on Piazza's back as some proof he was juicing? Those can beside effects and some reporters did site it as evidence.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 5, 2014 -> 08:24 AM) When people actually remember the letter V Xenophobia fightened too many people from the show and letter V.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 10:38 PM) Then why assume Piazza is? Giambi just looks like a big country boy too. It mostly has to do with players and their dicussions. Players talked about Piazza doing them but didn't talk about Thome doing them.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 10:04 PM) Raiders? Saints, I really dislike them.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) Except that he's guilty by association, and I have yet to see any valid association of Piazza with steroid users. He's guilty by most players talked about him doing it. Before the big Canseco stuff, players referred to PEDs as a Piazza milkshake. Right or wrong everyone talked aboutit.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) Fortunately, the only thing you have to do to get a government to build you a stadium is to convince a few politicians that this is true. Government administrators are morons to give sports teams money for a stadium. But once they do, they need to get revenue where they can. Taxing these things is the only way.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) Unless people can't do math, that amount is a pittance compared to the amount the NFL takes. That said...people who can't do math is a pretty good explanation for most of these stadium deals. Even though this is correct, it's the only way for the government to directly make money. It can amount to alot.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) Seriously though, politicians would be happy to go after the NFL if they actually blacked out a playoff game, and that's a fight the league doesn't want. Theoretically, this rule makes more fans go to the games. This is the only way the city/state gets revenue through the taxes on tickets and concession sales. Some stadia actually give all of the parking and a percentage of the concessions to the city/state. Government benefits from people in the seats not at home.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 02:17 PM) Keppinger, Gillaspie, and Davidson could all have made this team, giving the White Sox useful bench and backup options throughout their infield, if Paul Konerko was not retained. That would easily have been the best scenario given that Keppinger is under contract and cannot be traded or released without the White Sox eating a large portion of his salary based on his performance last year. Should Davidson not be ready in the spring, that would give the Sox the opportunity to bring along a backup SS other than the emergency ones they'd have, such as Elmore, who can also play middle IF and would be a very useful utility player overall. That's the obvious setup for both winning games, long term development of players, and maximizing the resources we currently have (i.e. potentially making Keppinger more easily traded if he gets off to a good start). None of those things were the White Sox's priority in bringing back Konerko as a player. You don't need both Keppinger and Gillaspie. If Davidson starts, one will be the utility and one will be gone. If Davidson is in AAA both will stay. I prefer Kep with his MLB track record for the UT.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) Quite right I am sure. Reason they still have blackout rules, so the city/state gets more tax revenue for their investment.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 10:46 AM) AJ is Steve Stone's replacement. AJ would be good in this role.

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) I still remember when Bevington walked to the mound to pull a starter, motioned for a reliever but he had forgotten to get a guy warmed up first. Good ole Terry. It was Robin who suggested that Foulke should go to the mound to warmup, while the real reliever quickly warmed up in the pen to come in the game.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 01:57 PM) The Tribune writers took the death blow to Piazza. I'm still saying Biggio is going under 75%. I also think Sosa, Palmeiro, and maybe McGwire go under 5%, which would be great. Updated: Jan.4 - 1:45 ~ 123 Full Ballots ~ (21.6% of vote ~ based on last year) 100 - Maddux 97.6 - Glavine 91.1 - F. Thomas 81.3 - Biggio ——————————— 71.5 - Piazza 64.2 - Bagwell 61.8 - Morris 60.2 - Raines 41.5 - Bonds 40.7 - Clemens 39.0 - Schilling 31.7 - Mussina 25.2 - Trammell 24.4 - E. Martinez 22.8 - L. Smith 15.4 - Kent 13.0 - McGriff 11.4 - L. Walker 9.8 - McGwire 7.3 - S. Sosa 6.5 - R. Palmeiro The votes on the PED group is interesting. You can almost see the thought process. McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro were considered HOF only because of the PEDs. While Bonds and Clemens were HOF caliber prior to the PED use but because of the use many won't vote for them.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 07:58 PM) I think the Lyle Mouton/Mike Bertotti ticket looks stronger Marc Hill manager with Ron kittle as the bench coach, Jerry Dybzinski as the 1B/ base running coach, Ron LeFlore as the hitting coach and Salome Barojas as pitching coach.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Very likely that would have worked better as a reply to Kyle. Wait a minute. I'm not the only one who screws it up?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) I assume Konerko also speaks fluent spanish for this to make sense, right? I'm sure there will be a translator around, if not one of the other players. All clubs will employ them, if needed. PK has always been willing to help younger players and I think he will be available to Abreu.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) Which is why you also advocated shutting down Danks after 25 starts last year and Peavy after his arm clearly tired out in 2011, right? It's different for pitchers and hitters. Pitchers need to pitch regularly to maintain the endurance and muscle strength since they get time off between starts anyway. For hitters the breaks are usually mental breaks especially for rookies who struggle or foreign players who are adjusting to many variables in life not just slumps in baseball. I think have PK as a resource for Abreu is a great idea. Pk went through many struggles as a similar player to Abreu.

The rotation is always the most important part of the team. Each team needs to have 7 starters to have agood season. Over the course of a season things happen and the depth is needed. Hitting feasts o poor toaverage pitching. Good pitching will beat good hitting. Over the course of a season, hitting will beat the vast amount of bad pitching out there. A deep pitching staff will beat this.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) I'd rather see Paul Konerko than Jake Elmore, no matter how bad Konerko is. Keppinger is still the more obvious choice. He has the MLB experience as a utility IF.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) I have a very bad feeling about these Olympics. Those black widow bombers have already started. I really hope I am wrong As bad as it could be, the USOC is much more worried about the Next Summer ones in Rio. They are already allocating extra resources for future security.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 31, 2013 -> 09:42 AM) Pre-2011, Morel was the BA #85 prospect. Davidson has never been that high. Fields was #95 in 2005, and #45 in 2007. Borchard was top 20 at one time. Brian Anderson was top 50. Simon Castro was top 60. Prospects are still suspects until they actually succeed. Yes. This is the danger with trading established MLB players for prospects. It's always a better bet to trade the prospects. However, with as bad as the offense was last year, Hahn needed to take some chances. Hopefully, the scouting is sound.
