  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) When Santiago's K/9 ratio puts him in the Top 10 of all MLB for starters? If the White Sox had five cloned Hector Santiagos in their rotation, putting up identical numbers, they wouldn't be in last place. One isolated stat does not make him a good pitcher.
  2. QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) Supposedly PV is now listed as tomorrows starter? According to MLbTR and Cleveland's twitter page. The D'Backs may kick the tires again on Peavy, hears Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The White Sox are now listing Peavy for tomorrow's start against the Indians, for what it's worth. MLbTR link on the page Peavy is tomorrow's starter until he isn't.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) I'd be happy to have him as a salary dump, but not as a value piece Exactly. If the sox get kubel it's in lieu of sending money to AZ.
  4. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) I don't know why people think finding good, cost controlled, middle of the order bats is easy. Look at the White Sox for example. Haven't been able to develop a middle of the order bat since Magglio and Lee, and have been paying a lot of money to Dunn and Rios over the past 2 and 3 years with mixed results. If Matt Adams is available in a trade, it is imperative the White Sox get him. He could wind up being a bust, but his body of work shows there is a good chance he can be at least a good number 3 hitter for several years. I don't think anyone said it was easy. Look at the Sox without PK. This is why it will take a player the quality of Peavy to get him.
  5. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) Peavy and Alexei for Adams, Wong and a lower level guy. I like Piscotty. Maybe a one of the million pitchers the Cardinals have. There will be at least one pitcher coming to the Sox in any deal involving Peavy.
  6. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 11:14 AM) I think some are hoping for a trade because we assume (yes, assume) the Sox will have done their homework and made a trade they're happy with. I don't think that is correct. Too many times in the past people on this board and have said we received too llittle in trades. Just because a trade can be made doesn't mean it's a god one.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) Fair points, I suppose. I suppose reasonable minds can disagree. Of course. I'm sure some GMs will look at it your way and some mine. That's most of the fun in negotiations. :cheers
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:33 AM) Yeah, I can understand that, but I think the stakes are high enough in mlb that reputation or not, people are going to deal with you if you have the asset they need. It's not like they can go to the Best Buy in the next town over because the one nearby is run by an asshole General Manager. It's all very interesting to watch, however. I agree. But then the only time a trade will occur is when the other GM needs something not when RH wants something. The good relationship will allow the other GM to work with RH when he really doesn't need to. This is better for the Sox in the long run and all it takes is sitting PV for a day.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:05 AM) Well, we'll agree to disagree. I know if I was a GM and I wanted Peavy, I'd take this as a sign that Peavy will indeed be moved for the highest bid, as opposed to there is a "reserve" that must be met, as you mentioned. I would hold my ground and refuse to increase my offer, except perhaps incrementally. I certainly wouldn't be making a big increase. Now if we had Jake start tonight, I'd be thinking "this mfer (Hahn) is crazy as s***, and he means what he says" and I'd have no freaking clue whether my previous offers were really near that reserve you spoke of or not. And if I felt my Club really needed another arm for the stretch run, I'd probably be second guessing myself whether I should be giving up that better prospect or not. I think there isa fine line between a tough negotiator and being unreasonable. Keeping PV out is a courtesy. If you get known as unreasonable, I think it hurts your abilityto trade in the future because others will stay away. This is his first year so he needs to be tough as he's shown but also willing to work things out.
  10. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) I still do not know how this offense is so woefully bad. The defense as well. It's just one of those years where everyone is not playing well. The primary for the offense is PK missing time and being injured. If he has one of his normal years in the middle of the lineup, this offense is much better. They need to find a replacement but that is not easily found.
  11. QUOTE (TheBigHurtIsBack @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 09:34 PM) Seriously I want to know why so many successful and/or adept players come here and suddenly take a huge nosedive. I'd like to blame it on something our staff or overall organization is doing but I can't assume that. But it bothers me quite a lot. I think players hear the reputation as a launching pad and see that the fences seem so close. They alter their approach and try for the power too much and it just ruins everything.
  12. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 09:45 PM) Oh yeah, forgot the day's shocking revelation that Andre Rienzo is untrustworthy and/or doesn't comprehend U.S. geography. Poor Jake may never recover. Just to clarify, you mean the person who posts on this board not the guy who has not been traded.
  13. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:28 PM) I never said it did. Why don't you look at his track record? I think Crain is the most valuable reliever that was sure to be moved. If he has to wait a week for him to recover and sends a lesser return over because of it I think it is a savvy move. Not to mention the Longoria contract, Shields for Myers trade, Zobrist find, team philosophy, Maddon hiring, pitching factory, etc. Sorry, my mistake. Since you made that statement in the middle of this thread during this discussion, I assumed (wrongly obviously) that it had something to do with this topic.
  14. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) My point is, there has to be value somewhere. So when Buster Olney says the Sox are building around Peavy, I have to call BS--or the Sox are idiots. I disagree. The goal is to make the sox a better team. Peavy is an above average starting pitcher. That is worth alot. If the players you are being offered don't make the team that much better, don't do it.
  15. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) Still, it is fun watching everyone here melt down It's the best. It would be different if Hahn makes this statement Weds at 1. However with almost two days left, its more likely a negotiation ploy.
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) It's ridiculous to think the Sox haven't been offered at least one good prospect for Peavy. Make a freaking deal, idiots. Peavy is worth more than one good prospect
  17. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) Hopefully this means he has a taker for Peavy lined up. Maybe it means that Hahn could not find a deal worthy of Peavy and Crain so he just dealt Crain.
  18. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:22 PM) Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 56s The White Sox are telling other teams they're going to keep Peavy and build around him. Yeah right! If Hahn doesn't get a package of players he thinks is worth it, he is a good player to build a staff around. I think it's a ploy to up the bidding. But if not he can still trade Q, Santiago or Peavy over the winter.
  19. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) Freidman is a great GM. Trading for an a pitcher with an injured shoulder makes him a great GM? I'm not saying he isn't but this trade really shouldn't be what makes or breaks the reputation.
  20. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Yeah that. I'm lost as to why people are promoting 80 percent success rate as a good thing. That seems awfully low for a non life threatening surgery. Oh and then he still has to be as good as he was and make up for key developmental time lost It is 80% satisfaction to return to previous level. It's higher just to return to pitching. 80% is high for any type of "replacement" surgery is regards to return to previous level of activity. sports medicine while making great leaps in recent years is still not an exact science. There are still things that cannot be done. For example, replacing a posterior cruciate ligament. Many people return froma torn ACL but tear a PCL and you turn out like Urlacher and need to retire.
  21. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) Of course preparation is the key for any test. I'm not saying to walk in there cold turkey, plop down, and expect to ace it. I just will put forth a adequate amount of time studying for it. I'm not pulling an all nighter like it's a final exam. For some applicants trying to get into our program it's the make it or break it part. I always suggest to applicants that they should take the practice exams and focus on thier weaknesses. It sounds simple but even a point or two on the revised exam can make a big difference.
  22. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 09:56 PM) The only way that makes sense is if the Sox plan on flipping Quintana or Santiago in the offseason for positional prospects. I just don't buy it. I still think it's because they know that it takes 6-7 starters for a WS run. If they trade Peavy there really isn't much depth.
  23. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) I agree, but I think the premium prospect would be positional and not pitching. This is just me guessing, anyways. I hope you're right.
  24. QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 09:44 PM) Appears that Baltimore's system is very pitching heavy. I'd think Hahn would be pushing for impact position players, so I'm not sure this is a good match unless Baltimore gives up Gausman or Bundy (which they shouldn't). I still bet that they focus on pitching with maybe one position player.
  25. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 12:47 PM) I would be ecstatic with Stanton playing at the Cell. I cant even imagine his power numbers there. People always say that in regards to the Cell but it never seems to work. Dunn is a prime example. His power numbers have not I creased and were down for the first couple of years. Thome did not increase either.
