Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery
ptatc replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 2, 2013 -> 06:44 AM) Honestly, I think our rotation will be stronger with Santiago instead of Floyd. The only thing that sucks IMO is that we now have $10M of dead payroll that will be difficult to move. If he is on the DL for any length of time, insurance will cover most of the money. -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 1, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) The only information we have is that Hallion said one line. We don't know exactly what was said, only what Price claims he said. Even so, who knows if he was "yelling." Even if he was, it's not a big deal. After all, they weren't right next to each other. Umpires, managers, and players have back-and-forth throughout a game as circumstances permit. Sometimes those confrontations are louder and more intense than others. Do you really think if a person is yelling a police officer, the police officer isn't allowed to yell back? I just don't see saying a line to a player as "losing temper" or "getting out of control." It's not like he ran up to him, yelled at him for 30 seconds, shoved him, etc. There is variations depending on the intensity of the situation. The police officer should not yell back and escalate the situation. This will only cause the situation to get worse. If one member of the incident remains calm it won't escalate to a problem. I'm not saying they don't but it just makes things worse. In a baseball game, the umpire's actions should be reviewed if the situation escalates. He is supposed to keep control. He is human and it doesn't always happen but if it does disciplinary actions should arise. In my classroom if a student starts complaining about how they don't see the relevance of the material (I use this example because I get it all the time) I explain how it fits in the clinical picture in the long run. I don't start complaining about how this is the way it is and they should shut up and listen. There are correct ways to handle confrontations. Escalating the incident is always the wrong way in this scenario.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 1, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) Price was yelling as he went off the field, hell he was still yelling in the dugout. Then it's taken to Twitter. Umpires can certainly yell at players or managers. They shouldn't. They should tell the offender to stop it, or explain their actions or call if that was the discussion. If it's arguing balls and strikes the player/manager gets a warning then they are ejected. There is no room for an official to yell and lose his temper. The umpire should be disciplined if this is the case. At no time should a person whose job it is to keep the game under control, lose his control. It will be detrimental to that game and have an effect on the outcome.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 1, 2013 -> 09:16 AM) Seeing what you want, Price is yelling then Hallion (likely) says something as we can't see, then Price starts yelling again. I already explained why, go back and read the other post. Price kept it going after the inning. He's going to get a response. Hallion responded because of 1) the body language after the pitch and then 2) Price b****ing about if afterwards. Tell Price to move on. It looks like that had already happened. If Price doesn't stop he gets ejected. The umpire should never yell at a player. He tells him to stop it, then eject him if it continues. There is no room in a game for the umpire to do this.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 1, 2013 -> 12:36 AM) I'm still waiting to see why saying a swear word is the most egregious thing you've ever seen in your life. OMG he said a swear word, something players and managers do all the time (hell, Price could have been saying one during any of his yelling). LOL. I guess you see what you want. And by put his head down and walk to the dugout, you mean he turns to Hallion and barks at him. You can't see Hallion walking towards Price, in fact he's standing there absolutely stationary in the brief clip you can see of him. In the very last clip you can see a zoomed in view of Hallion with the Rays bench in the background. To say he's all the way over by the Rays bench is incorrect. Of course MLB is reviewing the situation. They review a lot of things. I'm sure every ejection is reviewed. Add it on to Price taking it to Twitter etc, of course it's reviewed. It's not much the swearing, although I disagree that it shouldn't be penalized. It's the official losing his temper on the field. That should never happen. If the player did something to elicit that response he should be warned then ejected if it happens again. If the person who is supposed to keep the game under control can't keep himself under control it will effect the game. In this situation if Price was arguing balls and strikes, the umpire is within his rights to eject him immediately.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 08:11 AM) fwiw I think Bernstein's own background is reformed Judaism, and at one point he was criticizing orthodox Jews as well for being sexist and homophobic. Yes, he will bash anyone for ratings. His actions are no different than Broussard's. Taking extreme stands for ratings. Although I do admit at times like these I listen to Bernstein to see how he makes a fool of himself, so the ratings ploy works. I like the part where he insited that homosexuality must be genetic and people have no choice. What about his twin brother? or the WNBA player who came out then changed her mind and married a man.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) Ventura has made weird moves before, so situation didn't matter. I could turn that around. The situation in which Rios ran should be ample proof Rios didn't go on his own. Wouldn't Rios understand the situation? Or is his TWTW not high enough? Konerko was on first, of course he wouldn't move as he'd be thrown out by about 40 feet. Doesn't do anything. Because someone can look at what it tells the WAR is of a particular player, compare it to other stats for that player and other players, and come to their own conclusion that it's pretty accurate at valuing players. If WAR wasn't an accurate measure of anything, it wouldn't be so prevalent and would be dismissed anyway. I disagree. It's the only thing someone has come up with to attempt to compare players in all facets of the game. different groups try to calculate it differently. Just because it's the only thing out there doesn't mean it's accurate. If that was true the only stats we would discuss would be batting average rbi's and eras because that's all we old people had in the dark ages fo the 70's and 80's when we watched night games by candlelight.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 02:39 PM) I don't think his rawness hurts him as much in football as it would in other sports. If he's as gifted and good as they say, they can coach him up and he should be decent, which is an upgrade for the Bears, in short order. If they do plan to play him at G, it makes me wonder if a guy like Carimi is out the door. The beat writers made it a point at the end of the season to mention that Carimi was their choice to be most improved in 2013. Apparently he still wasn't healthy. Maybe he's never going to be healthy. I think it's more that since he has very little experience they want to break him in slowly. The lack of experience is not as crucial at guard. My guess is that he is a guard for a year, move to right tackle and eventually more to left tackle. How long did Bushrod sign for?

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 02:31 PM) boy it just keeps getting better with that guy It may the mental break he needs. It wouldn't surprise me if the "strain" heals rather quickly.

2012-2013 Official NHL thread

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 24, 2013 -> 09:44 PM) Emery removed with 6 minutes left in 1st period most likely tweaking his lower body injury. 2-1 Hawks on goal by Toews and Kane after one. I hope it's not his surgically repaired hip. How still don't know how he plays on it. He should have been out of the league a few years ago. With the ambiguous "lower body injury" there is no telling if it's his hip or not. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 23, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) Courtney Hawkins not in the starting line-up two consecutive days. Have they sent him to Kanny or extended spring? On a side note, kind of sad to see Freddy Garcia pitching in AAA...wonder why he's still hanging on. Guess an athlete at that age hasn't figured what else to do with his life and future, so you keep playing until you don't have that option anymore. Maybe he just really enjoys the game?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) I really hope they don't rush him. Just put a plan in place for him to return in August, and go from there. If he is healthy and throwing well, what purpose does it serve to keep him in the minors?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) All I can do is break out Star Wars: http://vimeo.com/25741586 So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause. I don't always agree with you but anytime someone makes avalid point with Star Wars (even if it from the new ones) they earn credit from me.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) If he can be a solid 3-4 starter for the next five years, I'll take it. Maybe they get even a little more from him. But you got to like his frame. Hopefully he's Floyd with a brain. I think Floyd's problem is he uses his brain too much. He over thinks, second guesses and loses confidence.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 04:28 PM) Jason Dellaero's another one. He got a cup of coffee one year. I went to the game. I'm not sure how many he played but I know he made it to the Sox.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2013 -> 12:43 AM) If it's serious, it's can easily take a year or years to get over...I know Harrelson's documented this before on numerous occasions. Coming back too quickly is the worst thing you can do, because of the fragility of that part of that area of the body, and the impossibility of protecting it. (This injury, a soft tissue heel contusion/bruise and kidney stones, far and away the three worst physical problems you can go through short of cancer/leukemia/life-threatening ones). It is the kind of injury, unless you've experienced it yourself, you can't possibly imagine how sensitive and how easy it is to reinjure with just the slightest twinge or violent movement that comes from swinging a bat/racquet/club, or just a quick movement, like jumping upwards to catch a ball. Hopefully with Dayan is was more of a "twinge" and not a full tear or pull, so to speak. It won't be that long. Even with severe ones he'll be ready to play in 8 weeks. He'll need to do a rehab stint in the minors but it won't be one that will last past the All Star break unless he re-injures it.

Reinsdorf/frmr Gov. Thompson sued by former IFSA director
ptatc replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 18, 2013 -> 02:21 AM) http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22001242...former-governor More detailed version of the story. In her 32-page federal complaint filed Monday in Chicago, Perri Irmer allege s that after her 2004 arrival at the Illinoi s S port s Facilitie s Authority , s ome of her effort s at rai s ing new revenue and reforming the agency were rebuffed by Rein s dorf and Thomp s on, two longtime friend s , and that they wielded their influence to get her fired in April 2011. S he allege s that s he s ucce s s fully pu s hed for the S ox to begin paying rent in 2008 to I S FA, and that afterward, Rein s dorf began lobbying then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich — now in pri s on — to have her fired. "Under former Gov. Thomp s on' s leader s hip, the I S FA Board had become ineffective to protect taxpayer intere s t s , and wa s acting a s nothing more than a ca s h cow puppet for Jerry Rein s dorf," the complaint s tate s . S he i s s ee k ing un s pecified damage s for " s ub s tantial economic lo s s e s ," according to the law s uit. A s k ed to comment on the s uit Tue s day, Thomp s on s aid: "The allegation s of the complaint are fal s e." . . . Thomp s on ha s long been tied to the S ox. In 1987, with Rein s dorf threatening to move hi s team to Florida — where a s tadium wa s built to lure a team — then-Gov. Thomp s on wor k ed the floor s of the General A s s embly to pa s s the law creating the authority and allowing a new par k to be built for the S ox. The cloc k on the Hou s e floor wa s turned off in order to meet a midnight deadline. The authority over s aw con s truction of the s tadium and the financing for it. The S ox began paying $1.2 million in rent in 2008, a change Irmer allege s s he pu s hed for. That s ame year s he hired con s ultant s to s tudy developing s tate-owned land around the Cell, and the analy s i s s howed building s tore s and re s taurant s would lead to profit s for taxpayer s , the s uit s ay s . S he allege s that in December 2008, Rein s dorf lobbied Blagojevich not to renew her contract and that Blagojevich' s former chief of s taff, John Harri s , called board member s — five day s before Blagojevich' s arre s t. A board meeting ended without a deci s ion regarding her contract. Two day s later s he wa s told by "a private citizen" enli s ted by Harri s that there were s till plan s to remove her at the reque s t of Rein s dorf, who wa s up s et over paying rent, according to the s uit. "Thi s private citizen informed Perri Irmer of the s e s tatement s by Rein s dorf and al s o that if s he left I S FA quietly, s he would be offered a job in the private s ector," the law s uit s tate s . Blagojevich wa s arre s ted, however, "before any threat to her employment ... wa s carried out," the law s uit note s . Irmer allege s that s he prote s ted the board' s deci s ion to build Bacardi at the Par k , an up s cale re s taurant acro s s from the Cell, on s tate-owned land while allowing the S ox to k eep all the profit s . The authority inve s ted nearly $7 million, the Tribune and WGN-TV found in a 2011 inve s tigation. In February 2011, a month after the board extended Irmer' s contract on a month-to-month ba s i s , Irmer reduced a funding reque s t of about $10 million for "enhancement s " to the Cell from the S ox by about $7 million, according to the law s uit. Around the s ame time, s he al s o un s ucce s s fully tried meeting with Gov. Pat Quinn, but s he did meet with Mayor Rahm Emanuel' s s taff and other political player s who could "impo s e reform," the s uit s ay s . But Rein s dorf and Thomp s on "were determined to s top her," the s uit claim s . S he allege s that on April 25, 2011, s he wa s loc k ed out of her office, and Thomp s on told her that if s he refu s ed to re s ign two day s later at a s pecial board meeting, "they 'had to' fire her, that her reputation would be ruined," the law s uit s ay s . After s he wa s fired, $7 million reque s ted by the S ox wa s re s tored, according to the law s uit. http://advanceindiana.blog s pot.com/2013/04...-authority.html I was tempted to include the last two paragraphs of personal comments from a blog writer, but that would definitely put this into the Filibuster.... In other words JR stopped her from changing the original agreement. I don't think that is a crime. He was only following the agreement, which is bad for the taxpayers but not illegal. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 07:59 PM) Why yes, I do generally hope that prospects get better at all aspects of their game. Especially 19 year old ones.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Apr 12, 2013 -> 07:57 AM) How long will a broken collarbone keep Grienke out? Non-throwing side, but still that's gotta take a while. Around the 6-8 weeks mark. It's standard for fractures. The clavicle though has a higher incidenece of non-union fractures since it's a long thin bone. Thisis where it doesn't healand surgeries and other complications arise. This doesn't usually happen in healthy individuals but it is a possibility.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 07:05 PM) How would you like to have a $130 million payroll with no closer? But anyone can close. There is nothing special about it. The bigger outs are usually earlier in the game anyway.

Beckham out 6-8 weeks with fractured hamate bone
ptatc replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 11, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) Keon Barnum had his right hamate bone removed earlier this year. Here was ptatc's analysis regarding that Beckham's sounds different. It's doesn't sound like it displaced like Barnum's. If it took this long to diagnose it was probably a hairline type fracture. They won't do surgery and are probably just going to cast or splint it. The standard healing time for a fracture is 6-8 weeks. He will need some time to make sure he has full range of motion then go to a rehab assignment -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 10, 2013 -> 11:36 AM) It's mostly Bears fans who are 40 and older (especially the older ones) who always do that. In the past few years every time one of these Bears teams would have an elite defense, inevitably some old guy would call the Score or get on Sun-Times or Tribune articles and start rambling about how this team doesn't hold a candle to the '85 team, blah blah blah. STFU Grandpa I agree with the others. That team was so dominate that it will go down in history as one of the best. It is like the steel curtain, it will always be talked about as one of the best teams of all time, due to the defense and Payton. It deserves to be talked about.
-
QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Apr 9, 2013 -> 11:22 AM) Bryce and Strasburg Over-hyped. This isn't basketball where two stars will win. They may win but it will be because there are good players around them as well. Ask the Cubs of the late 60's who had multiple hall of famers on a team but still couldn't win.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 8, 2013 -> 11:59 PM) Knights won 21-4 Lots of big offensive days and a nice start from Zaleski. Barons lost 5-1 Walker 4 K, Thompson 2 K Intimidators lost 6-4 Olacio rocked Braulio Oritz 2 IP, 5 K, BB, H How do you give up 5 runs on only 3 hits and 2 walks with only 1 double and no homeruns? That must have been a really weird inning.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 23, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) To tell you the truth, I wouldn't care if the home announcer didn't live and die with each game. If he's bringing me the game professionally with interesting content, I don't care if his blood isn't boiling when things go wrong. Chance are, when they're calling 150 games a year, they're going to lean toward the team paying the salary. It's when they go over the line, and think they're part of the team on the field that I have a problem with. To give you an example of somebody that straddled the line, but didn't cross it...John Rooney. He was never a "Sox fan", but he did a great job for the Sox and most people really liked how he called the game. I disagree. Learning about the history of the game is fun. I enjoy when people are fans of the game and enjoy the good things and get mad about bad things. That's the fun of sports. It's not life and death it's meant to be enjoyed. This isn't a broadcast about the serial killers and the deficit, it's sports.
