How does a company with just 13,000 employees have a 9 billion dollar business? What a profit.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) "The Big Show" just reported that Matsuzaka signed for 6 years, 52 million. wow, Boras loses. that's "only" 8.67 mill per season, and when added to the other 51 that he'll never touch? 17.1 mill per But you can bet Boras will reference the 17 mill when negotiating for Zito when it comes to signing. "See a pitcher with no experinence in the majors got 17 mil per year, my guy Zito is worth at least X amount because of his experience." Even though he argued with the Red Sox that the posting fee shouldn't be included in salary consideration. He is the best at convincing theowners to spend their money. It looks like the Red Sox didn't budge much though.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) I'll be laughed at but the Red Sox made the three best signings of the offseason, without question in my opinion. Based on money, team needs, etc. The only one I would question is the number of years for Drew given the injury history. There is no doubt about the talent but how often will he see the field.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:31 PM) The article I read stated early December, so that is actually promising news. Give me Toby Hall....he's a tough out against LHP and doesn't strike out much. I'll also add to the fact that he's one of the nicest guys in the game. He'll also be able to bust guys with corked bats.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 11:20 PM) Can you smell it? It's the Sandy Alomar Jr. experience coming back soon to the Cell. Only as a coach I hope.

Usually when someone is on steriods there are rumors and talk. I haven't heard any about him. That's not saying he isn't but I don't think it's likely. Pitchers use steroids more for endurance and the ability to recover faster, not to throw harder.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 02:45 PM) I will also say it's better for baseball that players compete in the boardroom as well as on the field. How would baseball look if players wanted so bad to wear Yankee pinstripes that they would play there for less? That they valued winning so much that they would congregate on one team for much less? But my main point is blame Boras all you want, but it is misdirected. He can ask all he wants, it takes someone to write the check. I blame the owners. But did you tell them to offer you less? That's the point. The company made you an offer. Would you have told them to pay you less so they could increase marketshare? Hire more/better employees? Make more corporate profits? When Boras lies about what a team offers his players to another team is this him being a good agent to get his player the better deal or is it unethical? Because of the threat of collusion the owners can't discuss thier offers. He can essentially have teams bid against themselves as he did with Alex Rodriguez and Texas.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2006 -> 03:14 PM) Within a couple of years, the entire core of the Rangers offense right now will be hitting Free Agency...Teixeira, Young, and Blalock. Tex, notably, hits after 2008, and the odds are by then he's going to be looking for an almost-ARod type deal, with Boras as his agent. The Rangers have a short window with this offense, and will almost certainly not have enough time to actually develop starting pitching if they want to make a run at that division. True. However, the article said YOUNG pitching not established pitching. I don't know if it really means anything it just seemed odd that they are looking for pitching while alot of people on this board seem to want thiers. I just don't know enough about their minors to make an educated judgement.

Rosenthal from fox sports said that the rangers are looking to trade for young pitching. They must not be too impressed with thier own prospects. Maybe that's one deal we should not consider.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) Or you could talk with people who saw him pitch over the last two years and they say that he's far from being a MLB caliber pitcher. His career right now is quite similar to that of Borchard's. Again our reports differ on this. But your last comment only referred to looking at the stats not talking to anyone that has seen him pitch.

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 02:46 PM) I can't believe people think Floyd is such a lock to make the 25 man roster next year. They must be seeing different stats than I am. Or possibly they are looking beyond the stats and thinking "while he hasn't put it together yet, he went through growing pains last year and is ready to contribute as a last man out of the bullpen role." If you only look at the stats (they are important however) anyone who struggles early in thier career (insert any of a number of names here ie, ventura, crede, garland) would never get a chance.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 01:01 PM) Williams can't reasonably trade all upcoming FA's if he has any intentions of assembling a World Series contender. I believe it's possible, however, to have a balance. Trade several for compensation, and keep the remaining players. If they are signed to contract extensions, great. If not, we'll receive draft picks. I believe at this current time it's vital to restock our minor league system because it's fairly baron. If the players you mentioned were not to be traded, or sign extensions, and end up leaving our club, who replaces them? Perhaps in the future, when Williams shows rededication towards a contributing farm system, we'll have in house solutions for RF or 2B who wouldn't take 4 years to finally contribute. What's worse -- trading Dye one season before his impending free agency and receiving a draft pick in Everyone who has played for Birmingham is a baron Sorry, thought I would add a little humor.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 8, 2006 -> 11:17 AM) While watching Jeff Weaver pitch in the WS, Jared Weaver was the poster child for Cardinal attire. Every stich of clothing was Cardinals. I get the feeling Buerhle will be signed long term. If so, I wish he would show up in a Cardinal jersey and hat. If MB was rooting for his brother to pitch well during the series and if the Sox weren't in it, I could understand it.

Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) yeah, I didn't quite get that either, I just saw SPs getting snapped up for ridiculous prices (the Lily at 10 a year is insane, and Cubune and Levine can spin that all they want) I thought FG would be in more demand, but I guess the 1 year left killed his value a lot, he's a rent a player This is a good point. I wonder if the high price for pitching actually hurt this deal. No one wanted to trade for Freddy knowing he will command at 12-15 mil to resign based on what Lilly recived. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:23 PM) Often injured huh? Two freak injuries doesnt exactly make him oft-injured. He's only played more than 150 games in one year during 4 years of service time. Yeah I would say that is often injured -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:03 PM) Actually, that's based off of talking to someone who talks to minor league scouts every single day. I guess KW and his staff found the worst deal they could and took it. Everyone here seems to know he had better offers out there. I hear different things about Floyd from my friends. I guess we'll see which ones are right. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) Do you think any team is going to give up the farm in order to trade for him and give him a 3/40 million extension when his fastball is 88 mph? On no planet should Floyd be starting in the AL. You're right. Base a pitcher's entire future on what 15 or so starts. He cannot possibly have a good career. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) I'm not gonna pass judgement on this trade yet because it's too early. On Floyd, his value is down yes, but KW and Coop have obviously seen something in him. He was a borderline top 10 prospect a couple of seasons back. He has good stuff, and the Sox must think they can fix ALA Matt Thornton. If that happens, it's a real good trade for the Sox, because they could end up with 2 starters who could fixtures in the Sox's rotation for the next decade. And that's IF they keep both of them. My guess is both are traded for Rocco Baldelli, who's available. that would be bad. Two starting pitchers for an often injured outfielder????? -

This trade still leaves the Sox with 6 starteing pitchers. It doesn't seems Floyd has anything more to prove in the minors. I think there will be more to come. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 06:46 PM) WGN Radio had a clip of Ozzie running his mouth about how Brandon is going to AAA, because he doesnt want to pitch out of the pen and he has no right to ask to pitch in the rotation. Ozzie needs to learn how to keep his top lip and his bottom lip together more. Ozzie must be getting twitchy now that KW might trade his relative. If McCarthy said this then I agree with Ozzie. A player with 1 year experience should not tell anyone what he should do. If you don't want to do the role we ask then the minors it is.

This is pretty obvious that he will be the next manager after Pinella. This is a good way to groom him for the position.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 05:39 PM) Nobody is going to tell me that working out four hours per day, seven days per week can happen without overtraining. It can't. Period. I'm sure he gets one day off. That is standard procedure.
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 5, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) Not to bring the room down, but it baffles me how personal trainers recommend him working out every day for fours per day. He's gained ten pounds, but there is a good chance that all that exercise will turn into over training and begin to negatively affect McCarthy down the road, specifically late in the season. Depends which muscle groups you are working on each day. Mix in CV workouts with rotational upper and lower body groups and you are fine. The article refers to a physical therapist by the way not a personal trainer big difference.
