QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 02:33 PM) Okay, I just don't understand how the Sox defense could be worse this season than last season... 2004 Lineup: 2005 Lineup: 1B Konerko 1B Konerko 2B Uribe 2B Iguchi 3B Crede 3B Crede SS Valentin SS Uribe LF Lee LF Podsednik CF Rowand CF Rowand RF Ordonez RF Dye C Olivo C Pierzynski We are the same defensively at 1B, 3B, and CF. We got slightly worse at 2B from Uribe to Iguchi. We got worse at C from Olivo to Pierzynski. We got alot better at SS from Valentin to Uribe. We got alot better at LF from Lee to Podsednik. We got slightly better at RF from Ordonez to Dye (2000 A.L. Gold Glove). I agree. While it might not be a stellar defense, it is sure better than the one we had last year.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 12:05 PM) Its all supply and demand. If the general public were buying up the Sox at 83 wins, it wouldn't stay there, it would go up. If no one were buying the Sox at 83, they would fall. Outside of setting the initial lines, the casinos are only responding to buying pressure when they move their lines around. This is correct. Remeber all betting lines are where they feel they can get the most action, not where they think the team will actually finish.

QUOTE(SuperSteve @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) Just think if any team would have only had to pay $250K for Manny Ramirez last off season... That's true I forgot about that. Must must be the senility setting in.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 08:20 AM) If you claim someone off of waivers, you are responsible for their entire contract as it exsists. If you sign someone after they have been released then you are only responsible for what you sign that player for. OK, I wasn't sure about the process but I thought there was a different rule with claiming someone off waivers.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 07:13 AM) FWIW, Davis was waived and no team claimed him. He can now either accept his assignment to AAA or waive his $1 mill contract and become a FA and sign with another team for prob. near the minimum. Davis' has no trade value, even if some of us thought he did, as teams could have had him for his salary w/o giving up any players. This really says what other teams think of him. Isn't the waiver rule that if someone else claimed him they would be responsible for only the MLB minimum of about 250,000 and the Sox would pay the rest? That means no one else likes him even that much.

QUOTE(mreye @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 12:22 PM) I'm not saddened by it. I can get tickets just about any time I want. I don't want "loyalty" like the Red Sox have. I agree. I have partial season tickets and usually don't need to wait in line for beer or the bathroom, so I don't miss any of the live action..

Opening Day vs. Cleveland 4-4-05
ptatc replied to YoungstownIndians's topic in 2005 Season in Review
In the sprots weekly I got today, more of the experts picked the tribe to win the central than the twins. The sox got no votes. I agree that I just don't the pitching holding up. But that offense will more fearsome. -
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 03:30 PM) - Says he's 100% healthy. - He will be our opening day starter. Music to my ears!!!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) Can't argue with that at all. Personally I would be thrilled if he was the last RHP in the pen instead of Politte. I agree. Over the last two years I think he has been better. Especially if Adkins had gotten more consistent work.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:36 PM) Joe doesn't know how to take the first pitch... EVER. Sad but true. How did he win two league MVPs with that approach?

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 02:19 PM) Wilson walk, Holliday single, 2-0 Rox Looks like MB has been hanging around the other starters too much.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Mar 29, 2005 -> 07:34 AM) From yesterday's Pioneer Press: "Mauer did not make the trip here to play Baltimore; the former Cretin-Derham Hall standout rested back in Fort Myers in preparation for a big week. The plan is for Mauer to be behind the plate on consecutive days twice this week. He has not been behind the plate on consecutive days this spring, having suffered a setback to his surgically repaired left knee in the middle of camp." ---Yeah, right. Mauer's knee is stronger than before he got injured. Even though he can't play 2 games in a row, for 5 innings. Mauer's knee is the issue here rather than the Sox' relations with AJ. I believe we al knew the a few weeks ago. We saw a reports that his knee was swelling up again and a normal menisectomy does not continue to swell up 4-6 months after surgery.

White Sox v. A's Spring Training game

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) So you are saying that a pitcher can't have a good outing without getting a win? You could say he had a good outing but not great. I would also say he did not do his job. Too many pitchers today focus on this "quality start" mentality. "I went 6 innings and gave up 3 or less runs so I did my job." They should focus on getting the team and themselves a win. Again I'm not saying that is good to give up alot of runs but the bigger picture should be the focus, did the team win and do you win consistently for the team. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) No, I'd rather have a guy like Randy Johnson who had a 16-14 record with a 2.60 ERA last season. The reason his record was not that impressive was because the D-Backs offense sucked. Why would I want Wood? The reason his record always sucks is because he can't stay healthy. And that he leaves games early due to high pitch counts and the bullpen blows leads. But only one team can have him so who do rest of the teams have? Hopefully pitchers who win not just look good on paper. -

Let's put it another way. Would you rather have a guy with an ERA of 2.6 with 12 wins ala Kerry Wood or a guy with 16 wins and an ERA of 3.89 ala MB? I for one go with the only stat that truly matters: the WIN. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 08:39 PM) I do. If a pitcher gives up 10 runs but the offense scores 11 so the pitcher gets the win, does that mean he pitched well? Of course not. That means that the offense performed well but the pitcher struggled mightily. Is it ever a good thing when a pitcher's ERA is high instead of low? He still WON. At the end of the season does it matter what the ERA is? Does it matter how many guys he struck out? NO all that matters is that the teams with the most WINS go to the playoffs and have a chance to win the World Series. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 08:37 PM) If he gave up only 1 run that would be a great outing. Giving up 5 runs in 6 innings is not. I don't agree that it would be a great outing. He did not WIN. It's kind of semantics but since he didn't win, he didn't do his job. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) So what happens when Garland gives up 5 or 6 runs but our offense doesn't score that many? You can't expect your offense to score 6 runs a game. What happens when he gives up 1 run and the offense scores 0? Do you say he did his job? Garland will. His job is to be better than the other teams pitcher. That is why the win is assigned to the pitchers. -

I happen to agree with TRU on this one. I think with the boom of SABR that the one stat that is overlooked is wins. Take Kerry Wood for example. His stats always look good. Strikes out alot of guys, keeps the WHIP down, low ERA. But can he win? No!! He throws so many pitches early in the game that with pitch counts as important that SABR make them , he must leave games early and the bullpen blows them. If he focused on economizing pitches and staying in games longer he wouldn't blow so many leads. People always say that pitchers today down finish games like they used to,. This is because the pitchers of old threw strikes and finished 9 innings with 110-110 pitches. Ferguson Jenkins was once quoted as saying "I pitch well enopugh to win if that means giving up one run in a close game or taking it easy if we have a big lead and giving up 5 runs." Give me a guy who has the most important stat: WINS anyday. -
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) I'm going up to the Friday game, but as I live only a little over an hour from there, I am coming home afterwards. If you DO stay there in Milwaukee, make sure you find your way to The Safe House for some food and drinks. PM me for the password to get in, but DO NOT tell somebody in your party, just so you can watch the staff make an idiot out of them on the closed circuit TV that runs through the bar! I love Milwaukee, and usually spend a weekend or two up there. Great friggin' city. the Safe house!!! Another great place. I once saw Chrles Barkley get tossed out and into a fight with police because he didn't know the password. Tell the women to look under the fig leaf!!!!

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 28, 2005 -> 04:45 PM) Uribe's hit chart: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...6874&statType=1 Overall I think the article was very fair, highly detailed, & solid in it's commentary but I think it was weak in building a case for the Lee trade. The biggest weakness being that it didn't consider how often Lee himself was a RISP vs Pods in 04. Instead it looked at the team in general & concluded getting RISP was more important than guys that could hit w RISP. C Lee 04 Bases Empty: vs LH 368A, 439O, 632S; v RH 303A, 354O, 502S: 108H, 25D, 16HR, 6 SB, CS 3 S Pods 04 Bases Empty: vs LH 186A, 248O, 258S; vs RH 273A, 341O, 399S : 113H, 20D, 5T, 7HR, 56 SB, CS 10 The SB is a measure of how many times they reached base on a bases empty AB & then stole a base. C Lee 47, S Pods 88. Keep in mind Pods had about 100+ AB more than Lee last year, but when you take into consider OBP+SB, he's still more likely to be a RISP than Lee. However; he has the potential of getting shutdown vs LH. An area where Lee thrived the best. That can really hurt in the ALC which features some of the prominent LHers in MLB. Kenny's going to live or die on this trade for sure. Don't forget to factor in what Vizcaino and Hernandez do. The trade included the reliever and the money saved allowed us to get another starter. Don't judge this trade on offensivee stats alone(it's obvious that CLee is a better hitter), factor in the upgrade in LF defense and the two pitcher's stats.
