  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 12:51 PM) Hahn thinks very highly of his managerial skills too. If Hahn hires Ozzie to be manager again, I want him fired instantly.
  2. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) Just guessing, but that probably means that the people who were likely to drop their season tix did it last year, selecting for the diehards this year who will retain at a higher rate. I don't interpret it as THAT positive of a sign (not a bad one either, of course). The was my gut reaction as well.
  3. I'm lazy and am not going to do this, but I heard something today that leads me to believe somebody might want to check Upton's home/road splits. Pretty damn good at home, not so much on the road. We do play 81 games per year on the road.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 12:42 AM) The sox have too much pitching depth and talent to spend that kind of cash on another back of the rotation starter. The only way it makes sense is if some mythical team finally decides they really want to trade for Floyd instead of signing a guy like McCarthy (which you'll note, keeps not happening) I think Hahn is being smart by making it keep not happening. He's letting the FA chips fall where they may, then Floyd will be a more valuable chip. There are more teams that need a decent starter than there are decent starters available.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:59 PM) Johan Santana - duh! I knew some jerk would go there! .... Different rules now than were in place back then.
  6. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:15 PM) Whoopie...............29 yr old What do you expect from the rule 5 draft?
  7. QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:21 AM) quick note.. Revere to the Phills is done. Really surprised to see them move Span and Revere in the same offseason Any details?
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 07:32 PM) The worst thing about losing AJP if the Sox do indeed lose him, will be the games the Sox play against him. As we all know, he's an amazingly likeable player when he is on your team. His antics in the 2005 postseason were legendary as he did everything possible to help us win games. But I'm going to hate people on this board turning on AJ, especially if he signs in our division and we play 18 games against him. You know he's going to want to beat the Sox so badly and he's going to do crazy s*** that infuriates our fan base. I pray he goes to the Dodgers or somewhere in the NL where we only see him a couple games. I can't believe at this point of his career AJ doesn't want to give the Sox a discount and play here 2-3 more years, then hang up his glove and remain in Chicago as a broadcaster/media guy. You know he'd be perfect at that. He should be one of those guys like Buehrle that retires as a Sox. Don't you agree it's going to be so annoying on here seeing our fans burying AJP if we play him 18 times??? It's going to be dreadful. Greg, this is a business. AJ is catcher on the wrong side of 35 who is coming off of a career year just as he hits free agency. If he's going to make a big score it's now or never. You say that you can't believe he'd not want to give the Sox a discount. I can't think of one single reason he should.
  9. I really didn't want Youk back. He did spark the club when he first came over, but I believe in the long run he's on his way to being a washed up 3B. I certainly didn't want us to pay him anything close to 8 digits for multiple years.
  10. As long as there is this hard line stance against Joe Jackson they should all be kept out. Rose, Bonds, Clemens and Jackson could all have cases made for them based on their careers prior to their transgressions. But, if you open the door for them then you potentially open the door for Sosa, Palmeiro, MacGuire, etc.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 03:40 AM) ? It is Brent Morel My bad, or a typo, I'm not sure. But yes, it's Morel.
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 03:18 PM) I have no interest in taking shots at you. Even re-reading that after your disclaimer still makes me feel offended, but I'll take your word for the fact that you didn't intend it to be so. Please do me a favor and take my word for the fact that my response was the same. Clearly, we both felt offended and shot back at one another. I'm over it if you are. Deal!
  13. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 10:08 PM) Brent has been dealing with back problems (seems to be the curse of White Sox 3B position) last year. I asked him recently how he was doing, he said his back is fine. He gets criticized a lot on here, but I think we haven't seen the real Brent. I don't think we've seen the real Brett either.
  14. The night before I heard anybody ever connect AJ with the Yanks, I actually dreamed I saw a posted tweet on Soxtalk ... "Report: Yankees sign AJ". s***, if I'm going to have prophetic dreams, I'd prefer winning lottery numbers.
  15. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 11:56 AM) While you're writing programs and punching in numbers to come with that 2.058 figure, I'll be sitting in my recliner with a cold brew and enjoying a ballgame. And the last time I looked on the only output format that really matters (the scoreboard) a home run is worth exactly 1 run with 1 run added for every baserunner. I don't need a computer for that. This was my post that seemed to inspire this whole disagreement. Note, that I didn't insult anybody nor did I criticize any stats. I used one particular number as an example and then stated my preference for how I choose to enjoy the game. So take your "oh please" and "arrogant" comments elsewhere as I was not attempting to degrade anybody's baseball acumen. Only when mine was dismissed because of my choice for how to enjoy the game did I get bent out of shape. That said, my participation in this conversation is over. So feel free to take your best shots now, because I'm totally done.
  16. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) Allegedly. He admitted it.
  17. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) We went from Kenny to Can't He. Good line ... but give the man a chance. I'd rather he make the right move than just to make a move.
  18. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) Thank you. That helps.
  19. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 02:19 PM) I think you have to understand that stats people don't like it when you deem their work to be completely worthless and a waste of time. IMO, that is an insult in what one believes in. Maybe not a personal insult, but a insult nonetheless. I don't believe they are worthless and never said so. Microscopic, I did say that ... but I was pissed at the time. I just chose to express how I prefer to enjoy the game. Take that into context. I had already been told I don't what I'm talking and challenged to admit that as fact. Sorry, I know better.
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) I think he was trying to say that you should acknowledge you don't know about the advanced stats themselves (not baseball) and stop attempting to invalidate them (i.e. you go calculate your stupid stats while I drink a refreshment while I watch the game). I simply expressed how I choose to enjoy the game of baseball and did not attempt to invalidate the advanced stats ... disagree with the importance some people put on them, sure. But I didn't personally insult anybody that holds these stats to a higher regard. Wite is an example, he holds a high opinion of these stats but he's knowledgable baseball fan above and beyond just the stats. As for the comment someone made about arrogance on both sides, let someone insult your baseball insight and see if you don't get your hackles up.
  21. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 01:53 PM) I love the stats arguments. I was one of the biggest supporters of the advanced stats when they first started coming out in the late 80's early 90's (still am). However with the way some people think they are everything and go overboard on them, I find myself shying away from them. The stats are nothing more than someone's opinion of what is important in baseball and finding numbers for them. They offer insight but are still just a numeric version of someone's opinion. I'm not looking to get into a pissing over this crap, and I'm not implying that you in any way are attempting to engage in this. But this ... person, man, woman, kid, bigfoot, neanderthal, whatever ... chose to resort to a personal insult by saying that I didn't know what I was talking about. Ten years of opinions on soxtalk and I don't know s***. Fifty years of fandom. Yeah, right.
  22. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 01:12 PM) That's totally fine -- if you aren't interested in evaluating player performance, there's nothing wrong with that. Just acknowledge (to yourself) that you have no idea what you're talking about and remember that since you don't understand and have no interest in learning, that no one should take your assessment seriously. Bull! This game has been a huge part of my life enough trust my judgement on what I see, the unmeaserable chemistry factor and watching the game itself being played. I have expressed many opinions over the years on soxtalk and I stand by my record of my words over your stats. I grant that your advanced stats give you a little, very little, insight to player evaluation. For you to come on here and say I have no idea of what I'm talking about because I don't happen to agree with your microscopic standard of player management is ridiculously short-sighted, at best. And, I'm being very restrained in my response to your arrogance.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) And I have no problem enjoying the game knowing the statistical analysis behind the outlying numbers themselves while also apprciating 450 foot home runs and incredible diving plays. It's primarily a matter of asking people to not patronize, insult, or ignore the idea of using advanced statistical analysis to determine the value of baseball players and rather to partake and consider that these concepts exist and they are generally accurate in their portrayal. People don't ask you to agree with it or to use it, but for you to try to understand them, to consider that these numbers aren't that complex, and that they do paint a pretty clear picture. This, I can agree with. Though, my main point was I just want to enjoy the game and not make a science out of it.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) Right. He is just going to walk away from $114 million. Reynolds is an idiot. He did mention that the Yankees carry insurance that would pay 70% of ARod's salary, so maybe ARod doesn't 'officially' retireso he keeps getting paid, but in fact is effectively finished.
  25. On MLB Network's Hot Stove, Harold Reynolds just predicted an ARod retirement due to this 2nd hip surgery.
