It seems a lot of people on this thread are trying to oversimplify. I would agree with the people like ptatc and wite in that regardless of what weight or importance you assign to it, outright ignoring any information is an unwise decision. The best way to do it I would think would be to consider all information and assign appropriate weights to each, almost all of which should be non-zero.

Hitters did well tonight. Pitchers...not so much, except for the great performance by Adams.

What to cheer for since we are in a rebuild
Dam8610 replied to SonofaRoache's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Root for development of the young ML players and top prospects which will (hopefully) make up the core of the next successful White Sox team. Root for good decisions in the front office, like smart trades, successful drafting, and smart spending in the international markets. Hopefully some of these ML average or above average players (or hot hands like Holland) on the roster can return some quality prospects to add to the core and raise the overall talent level in the org, and hopefully they'll lose enough to have high draft position (top 5 or better, preferably #1 overall) to add quality that way as well as spending some of the surplus they'll get on the international market, i.e. signing Otani. Finally, root for the team to really push into "go for it" mode when the star studded 2018 FA class happens, my hope being they'll sign Machado to be the face of the franchise and really kickstart things in the right direction, plus he's still young, so it's not just a "win now" signing. I think surrounding the young talent the team will have in 2019 and beyond with Machado, Abreu, and possibly Quintana will provide the veteran leadership the young core needs to rally around and really (hopefully) become a successful franchise for a very long run. -
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ May 26, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) If they go the underslot route, I wouldn't mind seeing them select Hiura at 11. Bat is as close to a sure thing as you can find, and his injury/defense concerns are overblown IMO — eventually he'll be able to at least hack LF. Baseball America seems to think Houston would not let him fall past them, so maybe he's not that much of a reach? I'm all for getting players that have a great hit tool into the org. The White Sox need as many of them as they can get. No more "toolsheds" who can't hit.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 26, 2017 -> 07:23 PM) Zavala already with 9 home runs. 2 in 2 days. Joel Booker is scorching hot. Also 2 homers in 2 days. Kannapolis is the only bright spot tonight. Jimmy Lambert is pitching well for them, any chance he could become a major league contributor?

QUOTE (GermanSock @ May 26, 2017 -> 04:04 PM) One of the main knocks on him is that he needs Tommy John surgery and he only played DH his final year so you can not really evaluate his fielding. But his bat is very good and developed already, and the White Sox have a very difficult time developing hitters. Getting a hitter whose development needs to be mostly focused on finding a defensive home might not be the worst thing for this organization.

Charlotte's doing a Game 2 after a 6:05 start?
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 24, 2017 -> 05:05 PM) He hasn't played the field this year due to an arm issue that may or may not prevent him from ever playing the field. That's the main issue plus the lack of a clear position even if he can play somewhere. The way his bat is talked about, it might be worth the risk of ending up with a DH only. I'd take an Edgar Martinez type player.

QUOTE (yesterday333 @ May 24, 2017 -> 02:55 PM) I cant say I'm an expert or anything, but it sounds like we can get a much better player at 11. Whether its a pitcher or college hitter, there will be something better than him available for us. He would be quite a reach... That's kind of what I'm asking. What makes him a reach and these other players "something better"?

Any chance of the White Sox drafting Keston Hiura? Seems to be a polished hitter who should find a home in the OF. What are the knocks on him?

Saying that wins "mean nothing" is an extreme position that I'm not sure anyone would take. That said, I think it's completely reasonable to acknowledge that wins are far more a product of overall team performance and run support received by a pitcher than they are a product of pitcher performance. I don't think anyone would argue that a 20 win pitcher with a 4 ERA is better than a 10 win pitcher with a 3 ERA, given equal or nearly equal innings pitched.

Luis Robert - detailed scouting report with videos
Dam8610 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
How rare is a 60 FV hit tool? Moncada is supposed to be the best talent on the planet that isn't in MLB, and his hit tool grades out 55 FV. A scouting director said Robert is the best player on the planet, and his hit tool grades out 55 FV. Just once I'd like to see a White Sox hitting prospect graded with a 60+ FV hit tool. -
QUOTE (SouthSide2004 @ May 20, 2017 -> 08:54 PM) I don't think they'd trade all three OF prospects in one deal. I think you'd have to get an arm as the third piece. The Sox have a lot of arms as is and given a choice between Frazier and Fowler, I might take Fowler.
-
QUOTE (SouthSide2004 @ May 20, 2017 -> 05:04 PM) With how well Judge has played this year, Ellsbury going nowhere anytime soon, Harper eventually a strong possibility, and a rising Dustin Fowler at AAA, I really think Clint Frazier & Blake Rutherford could be readily available in a Quintana deal. Throw in a young arm and that's a very attractive package IMO and one the Yankees might actually agreento. It should be obvious to everyone they need to add a couple veteran arms to the top of their rotation if they ever want to be serious contenders. Think Frazier, Rutherford, Fowler would be too much?

I made up a new stat for prospect evaluation
Dam8610 replied to Dominikk85's topic in FutureSox Board
Maybe it's just me, but from the perspective of evaluating a player and how it is typically done, this statistic makes much more sense as BB% + ISO - K%. Then it would read more like every other statistic, where the larger the positive number is, the better the player is in that category. -
Conference Call with Rick Hahn - highlights and quotes
Dam8610 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Winston-Salem's OF defense should be very solid with two potential CFs out there. I wonder if they're going to bump Call to LF or RF while he's there. I also hope Call forces the issue and gets to Birmingham so he can continue to get reps in CF. -

David Price Reports are Surgery NOT needed..
Dam8610 replied to NCsoxfan's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Mar 2, 2017 -> 12:08 PM) If Boston needs replacement for Price, best FA available could be Doug Fister. Industry speculation: Will BOS use Devers to pursue Quintana? https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/837360517106794496 Benintendi and Devers. Do they have the system to get a Q deal done with Devers as the headliner? I don't think they do without including Benintendi. -
Good to see Hahn wants more than Baez and Schwarber for Quintana, and acknowledged that publicly. As for the rebuild being hard on JR, maybe he should've thought of that when he was being cheap and loyal.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 07:34 AM) Also, if you want a list with a few head-scratchers, here is 2080 Ball's Sox list. Basabe is at 3rd, and they have Collins not in the Top 10. I think Basabe being at 3 is a product of them being on the ceiling of Basabe a lot more than most. Most reports I've seen have had him as a toolsy OF with a decent but questionable hit tool that is the cause for his wide range of projections, and will ultimately determine whether he ends up at the floor of them, at the ceiling of them, or somewhere in between. Most scouting reports I've seen on Basabe list his current/ceiling hit tool projections as 40-45/50-55. If 2080 legit grades him out with a 60 projected hit tool (which is what they list), then I can see why they would have him as the third best prospect in the system.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
Dam8610 replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 11, 2017 -> 10:08 AM) There's no way in hell the Sox turned down a package like that. And no way I buy them offering a 6 for 1 deal unless one of those MLB players had a bad contract like Bastardo. Keller, Glasnow, Bell, Hayes, Diaz...I can't figure out who the "SP currently in MLB" is, unless they're just naming Glasnow twice. Not a big fan of that deal. Meadows, Glasnow/Keller (I prefer Glasnow because the White Sox are great at fixing control issues), Bell, Hayes probably gets it done for me. -
I think that it's official at this point that there's nothing to see here, not just a rumor.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) Fangraphs has us at 71-91, AL worst. Not MLB worst?

Dam8610 replied to Al Lopez's Ghost's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Soha @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 06:28 PM) I would prefer this. Glasnow's control problems concern me as a headliner in any type of deal. At any rate, I don't think the Sox should move on any deal with the Pirates if Bell or Meadows isn't in it. According to reports they are untouchable. Control issues are the thing the White Sox are best at fixing. If another team is undervaluing a pitcher because of control issues, that's EXACTLY the player the White Sox should target.
