Lefties Boone Logan & Heath Phillips to get a shot

It's a great time to be left handed, breathing, and able to throw a baseball 85 MPH or faster. -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 6, 2006 -> 12:39 AM) I still say count me in on Detroit sucking again. I just don't like the makeup of the team at all. I still say the Tigers finish in last place, with the Royals finishing in 4th with 70+ wins. If they can't keep Ordonez and Guillen on the field, I agree. If they can, I could see 85 wins for them, but Verlander would win rookie of the year in that scenario.

I think a new deal will be done by Tuesday. There's an owner's meeting in Dallas scheduled for Tuesday, and I think this is where the owners are going to lock themselves in a room, and not leave until they come up with a solution to the local revenue sharing/cash over cap problem. From what I've heard, pretty much everything between the NFL and NFLPA is settled, but there's a group of 10-12 owners who are stalling the negotiations because of the local revenue sharing issue. The small market owners want either a limit on cash over cap (the amount of money that a team's payroll exceeds the cap by, though through prorating bonuses and other mechanisms, the cap figures do not actually exceed the salary cap), or a large percentage of local revenues (what seperates the large market teams and big spending teams from the small market and "frugal" teams) shared, and something must be done to appease them before a new CBA will be ratified, because this owner group is large enough to prevent any new CBA to be ratified.

QUOTE(Beltin'Bill @ Mar 5, 2006 -> 11:43 PM) Lot of good names tossed around here (and a few ???s). I think the two names that stick in my head are Carl Crawford and Johan Santana. Felix looks phenomenal, but unless he is superhuman, he should go through some growing pains like anyone else (physically and mentally). For the type of team and manager the Sox strive to embody, I do not think there are many names out there that stack up to Crawford and Santana. Ichiro is an interesting name too due to his all around play, speed, and ability to play sidekick to Iguchi. I definitely wouldn't complain about getting either of those guys, but to argue against Felix by saying he might struggle isn't really a valid argument, especially when you look at his career. He's pitched since the age of 17, and has spent at least 1/2 of a season at every level from A ball to MLB. In that time, he's never posted a ERA higher than 3.30, and he's had great success at every level. Therefore, it'd be difficult to imagine him struggling, barring an injury that drastically changes the way he pitches. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2006 -> 11:50 PM) he could, he might, talent, talent talent. SOunds like Kerry Wood to me. I'd rather take Pujols. Kerry Wood has had arm problems throughout his entire career, and has never been as successful as Felix has. Again, Felix has pitched professionally since the age of 17, and in that time he has NEVER struggled, at any level. This includes a stint after he had an arm problem last year. He recovered, and still managed to post a 2.25 ERA at AAA Tacoma. I see the talent, I see the production, so all that's left, barring a bad injury of course, is 15-20 years of dominant pitching.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2006 -> 10:10 PM) Felix isnt close to the player that Pujols is. Pujols is the best hitter in the game. Felix isnt even top 20 for pitchers. Felix isn't top 20 because he hasn't had the chance at the ML level yet. Give him a year or 2 in the bigs before you start putting labels on him. At 19, Pujols wasn't even close to the bigs. The only reason you can say he was a top 20 hitter from the start of his career was because he was brought up at the beginning of the 2001 season, and played everyday for the entire season. Give Felix the chance to play a full season. QUOTE(Felix @ Mar 5, 2006 -> 10:47 PM) You realize that with Pujols, you get a player that could break every homerun record there is, right? You also get the best pure hitter in the game. You do realize that with Felix Hernandez, you get a player that could break every pitching record there is, right? At the age of 19, he came up and baffled hitters with a 99 MPH fastball, a wicked curve, and a wicked change to the tune of a 2.67, a 1.00 WHIP, and a better than 3/1 K/BB ratio in 84 1/3 innings last year, and that was all without the use of his best pitch (a filthy 90 MPH slider, which the Mariners refuse to let him throw until 2007). So, am I going to take a 20 year old ace, or a 25 year old bopper in a game where good (or in Felix's case, great) pitching usually beats good hitting? I'm taking the 20 year old ace every time.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 5, 2006 -> 01:47 AM) Umm, Albert Pujols bar none. I dont know why you would have picked a unproven rookie when you could pick the best hitter in the game. Because of his unbelievable talent, and the fact that he's only 20, so you could get 2 decades or more of solid pitching from him. As for unproven, he did go 84 innings last year with a sub 3 ERA. Not bad for a 19 year old. Pujols is great, but we have a 1B and a DH, so unless you want to move him back to 3B, Felix is the better idea IMO. Miguel Cabrera runs a close second though.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 4, 2006 -> 09:59 PM) I stopped reading after "2. Tigers". The fact he picked us makes me nervous since he has Detroit 2nd. Detroit has about a 0.0013% chance of finishing higher than 4th this year. He's counting on Bonderman coming up huge, Verlander starting off his big league career as a solid 3-4 starter, Jones & Rogers carrying their success from last year over, and a very solid lineup gelling. It's not very likely that all of that will happen, but it's probably more likely than you're giving them credit for here. Remember, the Sox were supposed to finish 4th last year, and look what happened there. QUOTE(The Critic @ Mar 4, 2006 -> 10:08 PM) I don't know if I agree with this. The Tigers are not THAT far behind Minny, IMO. With someone stepping up to close for them and a few early breaks to build momentum/confidence, I could see Detroit as a solid 3rd place team in the Central. I agree. They have a far better lineup, a decent but lesser starting staff, and a questionable bullpen that is quite a bit worse than Minnesota. If they can get their offense to produce and find 1 or 2 more reliable releivers beyond Todd Jones, they have a chance at 3rd or maybe even 2nd.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 2, 2006 -> 09:30 PM) Nothing new to add, but, my impeachable source has confirmed that the Bears front-office will make a very serious consideration to draft Texas A&M's Reggie McNeal with either a second, or a preferable third-round pick regardless of an Antwaan Randle-El signing. Wow. That's a rather high ranking for McNeal. They could probably get him in the 4th or 5th.

So, when and where is this party going to get started?

QUOTE(WhiteSox311 @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 06:33 PM) i know what the question was im just sayin that 32 is not old for a baseball player and if it is then why did they give konerko a 5 yr contract Konerko is 30, so a 5 year contract makes him 35 at the end of it.
-
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 06:29 PM) I guarantee you that no GM in baseball would take 32 year old Ichiro over 22 year old Miguel Cabrera. Or 19 year old Felix Hernandez.
-
I like a few of the ideas here. A-Rod makes a lot of sense, Santana would make for a devastating staff for years to come (but so would Felix Hernandez IMO), Cabrera is just a sick hitter at the 3B position, and for those saying Pujols, would you plan to move him back to 3B or LF (where he played early in his career for the Cardinals), or just use him as a DH?
-
If you could take any player from any team and put them on the White Sox, factoring in age and ignoring salary, who would it be? For me, it would be Felix Hernandez. A 19 (soon to be 20) year old pitcher who is that talented and already good enough to post a sub 3 ERA in the AL doesn't come along that often. If anyone decides to post something like: "Who cares, it can't happen anyway", or something along those lines, here's your response: I told you in the topic subtitle that if you didn't want to answer the question to not even bother looking at the thread, so :finger

QUOTE(vegasking @ Mar 3, 2006 -> 03:37 AM) Hi all We are from the UK and last year my wife and I took in a sox game(they beat detroit 2-0, konerko homer) and that was me hooked i stayed up through the night to watch the world series. Anyway this year we are returning to take in the July 4th game against Baltimore(I have purchased tickets). My questions are will there be a good atmosphere for a july 4th game, will there be any extra entertainment and will the park be full. Thanks July 4th = Independence Day = Fireworks after the game for sure.

QUOTE(Soxrock200 @ Feb 28, 2006 -> 09:11 PM) Who you choosing in WBC If all the best players were participating, no team could touch the U.S.'s pitching staff. Since they're not, I really don't care. Move this thing to November!

Who are you picking to win it all?
Dam8610 replied to thedoctor's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I want to say repeat, but I just can't see it happening, so I'll just say anybody but Duke. -
I wouldn't boo, because he's done too much for the White Sox, but I certainly wouldn't give him a Standing O, because I haven't liked his attitude for quite some time.

49ers won the coin toss and therefore get the 6th pick.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Feb 25, 2006 -> 05:29 PM) Doesn't really deserve it's own thread, but it deserves mention. Apparently, Vince Young got a 6 on the Wonderlic............................. I'd have to see it before I'd believe it. So far, this "report" comes from a scout who says he's "99% sure" that that's the score he got. Well, if I'm a scout for the Lions, and I really want Young, why wouldn't I make something like that up?

Good news for Colts fans Also, you can pretty much guarantee that Larry Tripplett will be a free agent now.

Why is it that every picture of Jenks on this thread was funny looking?

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Feb 21, 2006 -> 08:57 PM) They run the same 40, but, you can't possibly tell me they have the same speed on gameday. Maybe not, but Ronnie's ability to run through people more than makes up for the extra quickness Bush has IMO.
