  1. There are 2 guys who MIGHT be able to make an impact if they were called up today IMO. They are Brian Anderson and Chris Young. Anderson would be the safer bet (not that either would be a safe bet), but Young is so much more intriguing. I know his BA is low at Birmingham, but he has good HR and gap power, a good OBP, and good speed. I have a feeling that if he were hitting in a hitter's park (like Charlotte's park or Comiskey), his BA and HR totals would go up. I know it's highly unlikely, but I wouldn't be upset if he were called up.
  2. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 11:47 PM) Right when Rowand got knocked out, I immediately thought of that commercial. I'm glad I wasn't the only one.
  3. QUOTE(IndplsSoxFan @ Aug 7, 2005 -> 06:49 PM) I heard on BBTN today that the Mets were expected to put Mike Piazza through waivers in the near future. Do you think the Sox would have any interest in him (instead of Griffey Jr.?) His skills are deteriorating, and he's only going to get worse. No thanks.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:55 AM) Just in case anyone cares I got a theory that the Sox traded for Griffey and that Reds ownership killed the deal. I heard this rumor on the radio, but I can't remember who said it. They did say that Reds ownership killed it because of the PR nightmare they thought it would cause. Anyway, is there still a chance that Griffey Jr. clears waivers and the Sox could revisit a trade for him? For his bat and his defense, it'd be great to pick him up, especially if at least a decent portion of that deferred money (along with some of his contract) would be picked up by the Reds without the Sox giving up the farm. Any chance he'd be a clubhouse disruption? Also, if he were to come here (I know I'm thinking way too far ahead on this, but it would be an issue), what would the OF situation be, or would he just DH?
  5. QUOTE(Cali @ Aug 4, 2005 -> 07:39 PM) Why do these experts seem to keep forgetting they're talking about the Chokeland A's? I remember how great the A's were heading into the playoffs in '01, '02, '03.... I forgot what happened to them though.... You didn't hear about the great Oakland A's dynasty of the 00s? Anyone who think the Sox have no chance obviously hasn't been watching baseball in the last 4+ months. Look at the Sox starters' phenominal numbers this year. As a group they're either 1st or 2nd in the AL in every major pitching category. 1st in ERA, 1st in wins, 1st in quality starts IIRC. Then there's the pen, which has 4 solid arms that could do well in the postseason, and that's if you don't count Bobby Jenks's 99 MPH heat and 12-6 curve. The defense is solid, the pitching is great, and for years the "experts" have said that that is what wins championships. So if they want to say that the Chokeland A's are the "scariest" team in MLB if the playoffs started today, whatever. The 2 problems with that are that the playoffs don't start today (and Oakland will cool off LONG before they do), and as has been said on this thread before, scaring your opponent isn't required to get a win.

  7. Fine? He doesn't deserve it, but whatever, it wouldn't affect him pitching for the Sox. Suspension? Completely uncalled for. Any team has to expect retaliation after drilling 2 very important hitters with fastballs in 2 consecutive games. Surhoff should consider himself lucky Buehrle didn't throw a fastball.
  8. Dustin who? Hermanson? He hasn't had a chance. Don't know of any other Dustins on the Sox.
  9. As I said before, great article. Now I understand why he wouldn't throw his change. Did you get the stats fixed yet?
  10. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 03:28 PM) I got a piece due up tonight. Its all edited, just have some tidbits to add in regards to his changeup (there was a reason he wasn't throwing it for a bit) as well as a new pitch he's throwing. Great article. It definitely explains why he wasn't throwing the change. I do have one problem with that article though. it says that he's 4-7 overall while going 2-0 over his last 4 starts. The problem is that he can't be 4-7 and 2-0 over his last 4 starts, because he was 3-7 at Charlotte before being called up the 2nd time.

  12. QUOTE(GBlum27 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) If you get a Chris Young interview I will forever love you. I would also like to hear from Chris Young. I think he'll be capable of even more in Charlotte than what he's done in Birmingham.
  13. I've heard so much about him that I want to watch him pitch. He's 18 or 19 years old, isn't he? It's amazing he's up so fast. If he's anything like what I've heard, he'll be the closest thing to a win every 5th day that there will be in MLB for a while (if he can stay healthy of course).

  15. Wow, I let this thread go a while. It won't happen again if I can help it. For now, here's an update on his season stats: McCarthy's 2005 Year to Date Statistics: 2005 Charlotte IL 22 AAA 4-7 4.69 ERA 15 G 14 GS 0 CG 0 SHO 86.1 IP 83 H 46 R 45 ER 14 HR 25 BB 102 K 10.63 K/9 1.25 WHIP 2005 Chi White Sox AL 22 MLB 0-1 7.17 ERA 4 G 4 GS 0 CG 0 SHO 21.1 IP 23 H 17 R 17 ER 6 HR 8 BB 15 K 6.33 K/9 1.45 WHIP
  16. QUOTE(TheHammer @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 10:55 PM) With an ERA under 2 in his last four starts I hope he gets a start or two in September. If he does well, boosts his confidence. Maybe he can comeback next year and go 23-6 and win the Cy Young next year. Something like that. That'd be awesome. I still say it all depends on him finding a way to consistently and effectively throw that changeup. If that happens, he could be a great starter for many years to come. The numbers don't lie, and his numbers are pretty good. Granted, they are numbers put up in the minors, but there is no other way to measure a player's potential that I know of. This reminds me, I should really get an update on Brandon's AAP thread.
  17. QUOTE(VAfan @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 10:13 AM) Excellent point. Do you have any comparables? Well, after doing some research, I came up with comparable stats of some of the best pitchers in MLB from their minor league years. Pedro Martinez: 8.53 K/9 1.19 WHIP 2.40 K/BB ratio Roy Halladay: 5.87 K/9 1.31 WHIP 2.00 K/BB ratio Jake Peavy: 11.33 K/9 1.10 WHIP 3.58 K/BB ratio (hence the comparisons) Johan Santana: 9.41 K/9 1.36 WHIP 2.63 K/BB ratio Ben Sheets: 7.43 K/9 1.26 WHIP 2.20 K/BB ratio Dontrelle Willis: 7.38 K/9 0.95 WHIP 4.32 K/BB ratio Of those, only Peavy has a better K/9, only Dontrelle has a better WHIP, and none of them have a better K/BB ratio. If anyone wants me to get comparables for any other pitcher, just tell me who.
  18. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 04:18 PM) On Baseball Prospectus' "Similarity Index", here are a couple of the notables on the list: -Jake Peavy I REALLY hope they're right on this one. Also, could someone please explain to me how in the world you read those charts and that data? It looks like Japanese to me.
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 03:40 AM) Unless the team that placed the player on waivers pulls him off waivers the second you claim him. Right, but having exclusive rights to negotiate a trade would be a reason to place a claim on a player.
  20. If you make a claim on a player, you are allowed to negotiate a trade for that player.
  21. QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 09:35 AM) The best thing that ever happened to mcarthy was this years spring training. If not for the spring, and the ESPN game in the spring, people would not feel BMAC was a top pitching prospect in AAA. He is good but, really does anyone on this board know how good he really is? Is he a 1 or 2 or a 5? I think we banter through days of stats and posts, keep your eyes on the mark(world series) fill the holes, make your run. Mcarthy's arm could be shut down tommorrow just like Honel. If he keeps up his production levels from past seasons (and what he's put up since going back to Charlotte), he should be a very good pitcher for many years. Throughout his minor league career prior to this year, he averaged 10.4 K/9, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 6.77 K/BB ratio. If he can put up anything CLOSE to those numbers in the bigs, he will be a great starter. Granted, he could be injured, but so could any big name that would be brought in via trade. So, when it comes down to it, if Kenny didn't feel there was a deal worth sending McCarthy to another team for, then there probably wasn't.
  22. We've all been talking for months now about potential trades, and on July 31st, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED! Is Randy Winn going to be the biggest name to move or is someone going to pull the trigger on a bigger deal?
  23. QUOTE(Adam G @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 09:34 AM) A proposed three-team deal involving the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays "hit a roadblock" Friday night, according to a baseball official familiar with the discussions, and now appears unlikely to happen at all. The deal proposed would have sent unhappy Boston slugger Manny Ramirez and Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez to the Mets, with the Red Sox acquiring outfielder/designated hitter Aubrey Huff and outfielder Mike Cameron, and the Devil Rays getting two prospects apiece from the Mets and Red Sox. If this is true and ultimately ends up happening, the Mets would be getting Manny Ramirez and Danys Baez for Mike Cameron and two prospects. That's a suprisingly low price, considering some of us on here have been saying it would take a couple current starters and a couple high level prospects to get him. If you take Tampa and Baez out of the equation, it seems as if we could get Manny for a starter (Rowand?) and a midlevel prospect because of his ginormous contract. Discuss. The 2 prospects are great prospects, and they along with Shoppach and Sanchez from the Red Sox are needed to pry Huff and Baez from the Devil Rays. Honestly, I think this deal would be good for every team involved but the Red Sox. The Mets get a top 5 bat and a good RP, and the DRays get 4 great prospects. The only team that loses is the Red Sox, unless they view replacing Mueller as priority #1.
  24. I loved that episode. Steve Sax was the guy who got arrested by Chief Wiggum on the bogus charges.
