QUOTE(wsox08 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 05:17 PM) Let's trade for AROD!!!!! and while we're at it, let's get Manny Ramirez and Jake Peavy too!
-
If the price is right, pick him up. If for no other reason, just to have him close out the division clinching game against Minnesota.
-
Boston fans have all been a bunch of self-important jagbags with an entitlement complex for a while now.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 11:50 PM) How would we look outside the Central if we excluded Oakland? 31-19
-
Put me in the Bobby Jenks fan club as well.
-
I really hope Philly pulls the plug, because the more I think about it, the more I'm willing to take a chance on our starters in the postseason, but could you imagine if we had FIVE solid arms in the pen (and that's not even counting the super stud talent that is Bobby Jenks)? Opponents would be forced to score early and often, because they'd know that once our pen was called upon, they'd basically be shut down.

QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 02:58 PM) Ed Farmer mention that Jake Peavy might be involved in trade talks... God I would s*** my pants if the Sox got Peavy If the cost wasn't insanely high, that is my dream acquisition.

QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 02:10 AM) This article is a couple days (July 14) old from usatoday... "Speaking of Cleveland, the Indians made several trade proposals to the Brewers for left fielder Carlos Lee, who leads the major leagues with 76 RBI, but he is unavailable. The Indians now plan to make a run at Blue Jays infielder Shea Hillenbrand and Rangers outfielder Kevin Mench." WTF is Cleveland thinking? Carlos Lee? Are they serious? Mench? Why the hell would Texas move him when he's finally breaking out? This confuses me. If the Jays are willing to move Hillenbrand, we should be on top of that first. Meanwhile... "The Blue Jays, who thought they might be in the dumping mode, can't give up yet. They are 44-44 and 5½ games out of first place in the AL East. They are listening to offers for starter Ted Lilly and closer Miguel Batista, as well as center fielder Vernon Wells and second baseman Orlando Hudson. But they say Hillenbrand is not yet available." Lilly and Batista are probably available for the lovers of those two. "The Phillies told one NL executive that virtually everyone is available, which could lead to a massive bidding war for closer Billy Wagner." Serious? They have some great hitters. Anybody for Jimmy Rollins (Ok, not gonna happen)? Wagner would be great. It seems strange to me that the Jays are interested in Burnett. Clearly they need more than Burnett to have a chance in the AL east especially now that Halladay went down. Trading Chacin doesn't make any sense seeing as how he's young, cheap, a lefty, and GOOD. If the Sox were content with sticking it out with the Count, maybe we could help the Jays get Burnett. Sounds weird, huh? But if they sent us Hillenbrand, we could be persuaded to help out in a 3-way. I can't imagine they're not building for next year. Adding Burnett would make that staff formidable with Halladay and their good young pitchers next year. Hillenbrand will be arbitration eligible after this year, do the Jays want to pony up? And hey, while I'm on the subject of crazy 3-way deals... maybe we could help the Orioles get Burnett. They don't want to give up Cabrera. We could ship the Marlins BMac, Everett, and whoever else it would take to get Burnett (assuming we didn't want to keep him ourselves) then turn around and trade Burnett and Crede for :gasp: Melvin Mora. Ok yeah, prolly not going to happen. He's only owed $4 million next year, but after that he'd be in for a BIG payday. Still we'd have to give up much more than Burnett + Crede IMO... seeing as how the Orioles are trying to get Burnett with a package built around Jorge Julio. We'd have to give up a TON... but Melvin Mora sounds so nice... kinda rolls off the tongue... If we need to dump some pitchers (in the event that we acquire a starter, etc), I'm sure the Yanks would love to have El Duque back or any decent pitcher for that matter. Of course they don't really have anything to give to us. Another 3-way!?! Ok, enough of my crazy talk...bedtime We get completely obliterated in that deal. You're basically saying that to you, Melvin Mora is worth the price of acquiring Burnett, Burnett himself, and Joe Crede. I'm glad you're not the GM. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 02:27 AM) Maybe a 3 way deal b/w the Jays, Marlins and White Sox, where Chacin is traded from Toronto to Florida, and then the Marlins move him onto us. Something to consider, although it depends on the team's needs and what they are looking for. If the Marlins get Chacin, they're not trading him. That's the guy they want in a trade, and a Marlins FO guy has said that if they'd send Chacin and Burnett could get a deal done with the Jays, the trade would be done already.

Hey, maybe he'll get them out of that dumpster they play in now. Other than that, I don't like the idea, because I like Mark Cuban.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 04:50 AM) Zito has been back to his old form the last 2 months, and not just vs the sox. Add in Zito's postseason experience, success vs possible playoff opponents, and he'd be a nice option for the sox. Okay, so you have 2 months, which include 2 starts against us and maybe 2 good starts against good offenses (in which he still gave up a lot of runs) telling you to get him, whereas I have the past year and a half including those 2 months that are telling me that his best days are behind him. His combined ERA over the last year and a half is still 4.27 and he pitches in a pitchers park. I'll pass. QUOTE(CYGarland @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 07:19 PM) Don't forget that Ozzie was a coach w/ the Marlins, and I'm sure that if he thought there would be a problem w/ chemistry bringing these guys in, he'd let KW know. I personally would do a Contreras+prospect 4 Burnett trade right now, if it's on the table, because i have no faith in JC or El Duque to get it done come postseason. If that was all it would cost, I might be tempted to do it right now too. What I would prfer to do is trade for another starter and use that guy and a top prospect to get the deal done, but it would likely take Marte also.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 02:30 AM) One thing that people have to remember if we are going to trade for one of these big name pitchers, they're going to be moving from a pitchers park to a hitters park. I can't really see the difference in putting down Zito when he's had really good numbers over the past 2 months and a half, and A.J gets off despite the fact he's still only won 5 games and his ERA has been increasing since the start of the season, the opposite of Zito. You've also gotta take into consideration how much each player is going to make next season. Zito has an option for next season for 7 million. Schmidt's is $10 million. Burnett would get a long term deal of around $10 million a season, the same as Carl Pavano's deal basically. Zito deserves some of that rap, as up until recently, he's had an ERA in the low-mid 4s for the past year and a half, and hadn't been the same pitcher that had won 20 games in the past. The starts that got him below a 4 ERA for this year came against us. Furthermore, I don't think he's had a good start against a team with a good offense all year. Burnett is about the same age, has better stuff, has been more consistent over the past year and a half, not to mention his 3 CGs and 1 shutout this year. I don't know what he'd want, but based on ability right now, A.J. Burnett is the better pitcher.
-
Without his starts against the White Sox, what would his ERA be? Even if you omit April, it has to be over 3. I just don't trust Zito anymore, at least not until he can keep it together for a while. That's why I've been one of the biggest advocates for getting A.J. Burnett, because he could come in and be the #2 starter, and hopefully, he would be inked to a long term deal immediately and we'd have a killer staff for years to come. I still think that for the long-term, Burnett would be the best acquisition we could make, if it were at a reasonable price, however, for the immediate future, I could see just getting someone like a Zach Day to be the 5th starter. This might actually be the best option for the present, as it would be a huge insurance policy and if nothing else, a guy like that could probably be an effective reliever. It's just that when I think about this possibility in 2007: Starters: SP Mark Buehrle SP A.J. Burnett SP Jon Garland SP Freddy Garcia SP Brandon McCarthy (when he finally fulfills his potential) Bullpen (in no partciular order): Jose Contreras (KW did want him to be a closer originally IIRC) Cliff Politte Neal Cotts Dustin Hermanson Bobby Jenks Jeff Bajenaru Shingo Takatsu That's just sick. I want that. However, I wouldn't sacrifice (or even delay) a championship for it. I just want what will improve the team the most THIS YEAR done. If that means no Burnett, so be it, but if we do get him, I won't be upset.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 07:01 PM) I forget where I read it [maybe from Bob Nightengale of Sports Weekly] he said Beane was listening to offers for Zito despite his public stance. If the price were similar for Zito as it would be for Burnett, I'd rather have Zito: Cheaper next yr, not the injury concerns, better acquainted with the AL. You're kidding right? Beware of the guy that has good outings against your team. Seattle gave Boston Derek Lowe on a deal where they acquired a guy that did well against them and he was so bad I can't remember what his name was now. Zito did well 2x against us, but aside from that, what has he done in the past year and a half? Nothing of very much merit. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 09:28 PM) Burnett > Contreras but is Lowell > Crede + Marte???? Actually, it'd be more like is Burnett > Count + Marte and is Lowell > Crede? Right now, I'm not sure if I'd say yes to either. I do, however, like the idea of getting a 3rd team involved and getting the SP they want. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 10:21 PM) Contreras pitches 7 shutout innings against a division rival. Burnett gives up 6 runs on 6 hits (3 HRs) and 4 walks, with 3 Ks in 5 innings against a division rival. 86 pitches, only 47 strikes. Marlins give him a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd, and it doesn't even last a half inning. I hope we steer clear of Burnett at this point. I don't watch Marlins games, but he seems just as much of a head case that can't control his great "stuff" as Jose. Burnett has had only had 1 outing this year when he gave up less than 2 runs. After tonight, Contreras has had 6. Yes, 6. I disagree with your assessment of him, and that less than 2 runs in an outing stat just tells me that Burnett is more consistent than Count, considering Burnett has a lower ERA. That lineup BA/OBP thing that Juggernaut did also convinces me that Burnett could put up similar numbers in the AL. QUOTE(Winnin Ugly @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 11:21 PM) If I was KW I would trade the Count,Crede, B Mac and a lower prospect to Toronto for Gustavo Chacin, Shane Hillebrand& Miquel Batista That makes about 0 sense. We lose one of our SPs, our top prospect, a damn good defensive 3B (who might just finally find a way to hit in the .260-.275 range), and another prospect for a closer, a young talented SP, and a 1B who has been moved to third part time this year. It doesn't even make sense for Toronto, because they lose 3 pieces that have helped them a lot thus far this season and they're trying to compete this year or next year. It just makes no sense for either side, and it won't happen. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 11:22 PM) Jason Schmidt's night: 6 innings, 4 hits, 4 BBs, 7 Ks, 1 run, left for pinch hitter in 7th in 1-1 tie at Dodger Stadium. He's still the right move for the Sox. Now that Contreras has found his form in back to back games, I wouldn't give much more than Contreras-Uribe for Schmidt-Vizquel, but it's still the best deal that has been discussed over the last two weeks. One A list prospect like Anderson and a B list prospect should be enough. And I'm not in a hurry to make this deal. July 31 would be fine. I disagree entirely with your assessment of Schmidt and the Giants demands. He's an aging fireballer who can't get his fastball up there like he used to and has never been a pitcher who could spot his pitches. So, as the velocity goes down for Schmidt, so does the productivity. Also, Sabean wants to compete next year (he still has delusions of Bonds' roid ravaged knee getting healthy enough for him to last a full season), so there's no way he's taking prospects for his staff ace, even if his staff ace is only half of what he used to be. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 12:27 AM) It's weird seeing a lot of people flop around about which pitcher to get based on one or two performances. The Burnett talk seemed to cool off after today's outing, but not Schmidt has a pretty good outing and we want him again. Stick to your guns, don't let one outing dictate your opinion: use facts, reason, and logic to do that. Exactly. I still think we should get Burnett, and the more info I get on him, the more I think we should find a way. He's consistent, and he's able to get the meat of the lineups he faces out. Get a 3rd team involved, send some mid level specs for a decent young SP, and send that guy as part of a package (the other part being most likely Marte, even though I'd hate to break up the Fab 4 of the Sox pen) to the Marlins for Burnett. The only problem that presents is that we'd then have to send top level prospects out to find another solid reliever to take Marte's place (like a Guadardo or maybe a Wagner).

I'll give her one thing, she's a pretty good comedy writer. The idea of a washed up Bret Boone singlehandedly vaulting the struggling Twins to a division title from 9 GB at the all-star break is quite a funny concept indeed.
-
I'd call the pitching about even. I think the Sox might have a slight edge in starting pitching in a 7 game series, as our rotation is very topheavy, and St. Louis is just solid 1-5. Buehrle > Mulder Freddy = Morris and Garland = Carpenter or maybe Garland SLIGHTLY Other than that, everything else looked about right.
-
I think this question has been thrown out there a few times before, but again, my answer is Jake Peavy. A 23 year old who is the ace of his staff is pretty hard to ignore.
-
If he can ever get over his mental issues, he could be great. I remember another guy who was thought to be a great closing prospect named Curt Schilling who had some mental problems, but from what I hear, he went on to have a pretty productive career. Then again, there are also the guys like Bobby Seay, who never put it together. Only time will tell, but hopefully, Jenks will be closer to the next Schilling than the next Seay.

Say no to Schmidt and yes to Burnett (if it doesn't tear the ML roster apart). Schmidt has lost some velocity, and at his age, it's doubtful he'll get it back. This wouldn't be a big deal if he was a guy who threw 97 and could spot a pitch where ever he wanted it (ala Curt Schilling) and his velocity dipped a bit, but his control is average at best and without that blazing fastball, he won't be the Jason Schmidt of old. A.J. Burnett, on the other hand, is a young pitcher who finally appears to be developing into the pitcher he could someday be, and with a 100 MPH fastball and devastating curve, he will only get better as he matures, and he could someday be a dominant ace. He has shown flashes of his greatness at times (his last start was a good example of that, 14 Ks in 18 outs), and over the past year, he's posted better numbers than most of our current starting staff (Buehrle being the sole exception). If the Sox can ink him long term (aka 3 years for Reinsdorf), and he doesn't tear up the ML roster, I say the deal should be done. I really hope the Marlins aren't going to require a Chacin-type pitcher (McCarthy for us) for any deal to be done though. If they are, I don't think they're going to get a deal done, because it wouldn't make much sense for Toronto to trade Chacin for Burnett unless they were trying to compete next year, because Halladay just went down for most (if not all) of the season, so they're going to fade, and I really don't think we're going to give up McCarthy, nor will the Orioles give up Cabrera.

I prefer the commentary of Rooney and Farmer (even though you do get the sound about 1/2 second early that way) over Hawk and DJ, but neither are bad announce teams IMO. If you don't like Hawk, mute the TV, find the closest radio, and listen to Rooney and Farmer. Speaking of broadcasters on ESPN1000, I heard Mac ask on the air for heavethehawk.com to remove his name and their partial quote from their website. Methinks a certain Hawk hating website could be in some legal trouble very soon.
-
I think you're reading too much into it. Sure, the pitchers are adjusting to him, but he's also a 2-hole hitter, and gives up a lot of outs to move Scotty over, so that might be a part of why his average is down. Besides, baseball is a game of adjustments, so the pitchers have adjusted to him, and now he has to adjust to their adjustments. Then it just keeps going back and forth. As far as I'm concerned, if he finishes with an average in the .280s (where he's at now), he's done very well.
-
I personally don't like the bandwagon fans, but as long as they're giving money to the team, whatever. Just don't talk to them and think about all the money they're giving to the team. When I do, they don't irritate me as much.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 12:54 AM) i know i'm getting off topic, but with the all-star allegedly meaning something these days, every team shouldn't get an all-star Well, until MLB changes the rule, every team will have one.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 12:52 AM) not for nothing, but who is going to be the royals' all-star? emil brown? jesus. Emil Brown is the closest thing they have to an all-star. I know, it's pathetic.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 12:17 AM) Posada>>>IRod this year Exactly. Add to that the fact that he's a Yankee, and it's pretty much a lock that he's going.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) I'm gauranteeing right now that IRod makes the AS game. I doubt it. The Yankee fans would scream bloody murder if I-Rod got in ahead of Posada, and I think Tek is winning the vote right now.
