  2. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 11:49 PM) I'm not so sure they would want Everett. I think they would want a younger and cheaper outfielder. They would also want a better reliever than either Vizcaino or Shingo. Everett is the best OF the Sox have to offer that's ML ready, and he also happens to be left handed, something that was specifically written into what the Marlins were asking for. As for the MR, I'd hope that one of those two would get the job done, and with any luck they could. Beyond them, maybe put in Baj?
  3. Here's what I'd offer for Burnett, assuming two things: 1) The reports of what the Marlins are looking for are accurate and 2) Once Burnett is on the Sox, he signs to at least a 2 year extension: Marlins get: SP Brandon McCarthy OF Carl Everett MR Luis Vizcaino/Shingo Takatsu White Sox get: SP A.J. Burnett
  4. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Meanwhile, Jenks has the potential to be an amazing closer (94 MPH SLIDER?!). Randy Johnson in his prime had a slower slider. Does he consistently hit that velocity with it and does he have any control over it? If he does, that's just plain filthy.
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) Don't trade for Burnett UNLESS you can work out a long - term deal with him. Agreed 100%. I want him here, and I'd be satisfied if the Sox gave up a large package to get him here. However, I also want him to STAY HERE, so that big package that the team gives up doesn't go for naught. By the way, what's LOOGY stand for? I know it means lefty specialist basically, but I've been trying to figure out the acronym for a while now.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) True but Schmidt > Garcia and 05 Sox > 04 Sox. I'd really like to know why everyone seems to be so in love with a struggling 32 year old with velocity problems. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:19 PM) As many teams as there are out there looking for starting pitching, it's going to cost us a ton if that's what we go for. We will literally be in a bidding war if we go after Schmidt. Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, Rangers, hell they could all use another starter. We're in a much better position that almost anyone else in the league. This is precisely why the Sox should go after Burnett. With Schmidt's past couple of years, the Giants are going to want a HUGE package for Schmidt, who may or may not be fading into mediocrity as his velocity has dropped. Not a good sign from a 32 year old. Meanwhile, Burnett is entering into the best years of his career, has put up the stat line of an ace over the past year (go back 13 or so pages and look at my post about it if you don't believe me), and he's throwing 100 MPH. If you're going to give a huge package away, that would be the guy to get in return. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) Jesus Christ. When did he become available?
  7. I don't have confidence that Schmidt is an ace level pitcher any more. Sure, he had a quality start tonight, but he barely met the minimum requirement to do so. Ace level pitchers don't do that, or if they do, it's on a very rare occassion. Schmidt has done that or worse far too much for the Sox to take a chance on him IMO. If the Sox are going make a big run at a starter, why not make it a 28 year old with wicked stuff including a 100 MPH fastball, and stats like this over his past 35 games (34 of which are starts), or about one season worth of a sample set: 12-11 3.43 ERA 35 G 34 GS 4 CG 1 SHO 223.1 IP 192 H 92 R 85 ER 15 HR 71 BB 206 K 1.18 WHIP 8.30 K/9 If I could figure out how to calculate his BAA I would, but I know it's somewhere in the .230s The ONLY stat that doesn't look like a stat that a good pitcher would have is his record, but that's a product of the Marlins not giving him run support. This is the pitcher that the Sox should go after, if they're going to go after anyone.

  9. Well, he was OBVIOUSLY talking about the battle for 3rd place.
  10. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) The east coast bias works for the Yankees and Red Sox, not the Blue Jays. Maybe, but I'm thinking they'll see that the Blue Jays are in the AL East, and the east coast bias will kick in, thus making Halladay the starter. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but something like that will be what pushes him over the top in a very close race between the two.
  11. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:56 AM) Kenny could probably jump right in and nab Burnett if he wanted to. However, it would likely cost Brandon McCarthy, Carl Everett, and a reliever. The Marlins would throw in outfielder Juan Encarnacion in any deal. GO FOR IT! Especially if they give us an OF back.
  12. On second thought, I take back my previous comments, because as we all know, and as evidencd by this act of petty vandalism, Sox fans have far more class than Flub fans. We should keep it that way.
  13. To me, it's a tough call. Either one (or Garland for that matter) deserves it. Since Halladay is in the AL East, and the east coast bias in the media is so sickening it's not even funny, I think Halladay will end up getting it.
  14. All I'd need to know to convince me that Schmidt should NOT be traded to the Sox is that his velocity was in the low 90s. Was it?
  15. Next time anyone goes to the Urinal, use it as one.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 01:54 PM) Funny I always though the All-Star game was for the guys who did the best jobs at their respective positions. Who lied to you? The day the it was decided that the fans would choose the starters was the day that the All-Star game became a popularity contest based on name recognition.
  17. Until I see a convincing run from Schmidt (2 starts is NOT a convincing run), I'd rather the Sox take a run at Burnett. Just because he only has this year left on his contract doesn't mean he won't sign a longer term deal here (see: Freddy Garcia).
  18. Schmidt is having velocity problems, is already in his 30s, and has struggled this year...not exactly the best guy in the world to trade for. Did I mention there's a 28 year old fireballer who's pitched over 100 innings and has an ERA in the low-mid 3s potentially on the block?
  19. Great, now I know if I say something now that turns out to be idiotic in 6 months, I'm going to hear about it over and over.
  20. If Burnett is truly on the market, bye-bye BMac, Marte, and whoever else within reason if it's going to bring him in for a few years. I honestly wouldn't mind, because we'd then have 5 quality starters, something few, if any, MLB teams can claim.
  21. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 11:09 AM) Seriously? I will nut in my pants if you are telling the truth. Would there be a better rotation in baseball than this? Mark Buehrle Jason Schmidt Freddy Garcia Jon Garland Jose Contreras Buehrle Burnett Garcia Garland Contreras
  22. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 11:28 PM) I don't remember that. It was widely speculated that he would get traded in the Garcia deal since the beginning. Oh okay. I thought he was, and was really asking more than anything.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 02:05 PM) Russ Ortiz got a lot of money because he was in the magic hands of Leo Mazzone and GM's haven't figured out yet that Leo's actually related to Jesus. I swear that guy does for pitchers what Coors Field does for batters. Millwood, Neagle, Ortiz, Glavine, how much better were each of them when they pitched for Mazzone? That is very true. I think you could throw the most recent examples of Mike Hampton and Jaret Wright in there as well. He's a great pitching coach.
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) Yeah, I'm sure Florida would have to think long and hard choosing between Ryan Sweeney and Timo Perez... Hey, you never know. When a team is looking for ML players, they might take a guy who can play in MLB right now over a prospect who could be a few years away still. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) What the hell are you talking about? Even when Chavez doesn't hit, he plays defense that is better than any other player in the league, at a position that is much more important (defensively) than 1B. Konerko's best OBP year was still more than .030 %-points behind Chavez'. Chavez is also entering his prime years, while Konerko will turn 30 next year. Saying that Chavez will be equal to Konerko in the next couple years is a real poor comparison, IMO. Chavez makes a lot of money, and hasn't hit well this year. He'd be getting ripped apart by some people here were he on the White Sox. That wasn't really even my point though. My point was that Chavez isn't even a possibility.
