McCarthy out of rotation; to bullpen as swingman
Dam8610 replied to Jabroni's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well, maybe he'll be able to find his change in the pen. He has to be able to throw his offspeed pitches more often if he's going to succeed. -
QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 06:23 PM) No kidding. That's why the Astros will never trade Oswalt. They'd trade a 42yr old Clemens though. If the Astros were willing to trade Oswalt, I'd give them McCarthy, Anderson and another prospect. Personally, I would hope that we'd be able to keep one of the two you named, but that's probably the type of deal that it'd have to be. I'd do it too, because Oswalt is a great pitcher and would give us an excellent rotation.

QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) I thought this was funny listening on the radio yesterday- John Rooney kept mentioning how good of a team the Cardinals were and how lucky of a team the Sox were. All tongue in cheek, of course. Why would he take a shot at the Cardinals? That doesn't make sense.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) I thougth I saw him try to throw it a couple of times and miss the strike zone badly. The one time I saw him throw it, he missed the zone, but the batter swung.

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:43 PM) I think San Fran will be asking top dollar for Schmidt based on past performance, and if the Sox are going to pay top dollar for a starter, I'd prefer it to be Roy Oswalt. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:44 PM) The Astros would ask for top dollar for Oswalt too. I believe I said that. Oswalt is an awesome pitcher and he isn't tanking this season. That's why I'd prefer the Sox to pay top dollar for him rather than Schmidt.

The McCarthy we saw yesterday is not ready for the show or big league hitters. The McCarthy we saw in spring training is definitely ready for both of those things. The difference between these two McCarthys? A good changeup that he throws often and can locate and the location of his fastball. McCarthy is afraid to throw his change for some reason, as he only threw it once last night. It was effective the time he did throw it, so I don't know why he wouldn't continue throwing it. Also, he's throwing his fastball too high a lot of the time, and it's not the same pitch as the one that is low in the zone. His curveball is the only pitch that appears the same as the one that he threw in the spring, and it was effective when he threw it, but he didn't throw it very much either. I'm not sure if he's scared to throw anything but the fastball or what, but I think the coaching staff should find a way to force him to throw his offspeed pitches more often, because I think it would lead to better success than he's had thus far.

RF, and I think Burnitz will win if it's not fixed.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:19 PM) Trade BMac for Roger Clemens. If the Astros' scouts are as high on BMac as the Sox are, they would do it. They're not going anywhere this year, and Clemens is costing them a ton of money they could use to rebuild. Oswalt and BMac would give them two aces in their rotation for years to come (again assuming they see what the Sox see in BMac). Clemens would give the Sox the best rotation around. For those who say we don't need another starter, what happens if Buehrle, Garcia, or Garland go down? If the Sox believe this is THE year, they should try to get Clemens. Although Clemens costs a lot of money, he is one of the few pitchers around that put asses in the seats. With the buzz created by Clemen's acquisition, the Sox would increase attendence by a significant amount, paying for Clemens' salary. I heard Clemens has stated he would not be interested in being traded to anyone other than maybe the Yankees or Rangers. But I believe under the present circumstances, he would consider pitching for the team with the best record in baseball. Of course this is probably just a pipe dream, but the more I think of it, the more this has KW written all over it. Roger Clemens isn't even the best choice on the Astros IMO. Roy Oswalt and Andy Pettite are much younger and might give you more than a rental player, and they're not going to cost nearly as much money.

You'd need 40,000 accounts to even make a dent in the all-star voting. The all-city team is far easier to rig.

Hey, until the Sox are still the best team in baseball going into the stretch run of the season, they're not going to get the respect they deserve from ESPN's idiot...err...experts, because they all picked the Twins to win the division, and picked their dark horse to be Cleveland. Now that both of those teams combined aren't as many games over .500 as the Sox are, they look stupid, so they're going to sit there and say how the Sox are going to falter and fail eventually. Once they get past their preseason picks late in the season, they'll start begrudgingly admitting that the Sox are for real.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 08:35 AM) ESPN's Cold Pizza just had Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney on and they talked about the players that could be on the trading block. They mentioned that the Giants and Rockies would be willing to move anyone and that Jason Schmidt, Barry Zito, and Preston Wilson will be the major players on the move. I wonder how much he'd cost in a trade? He's been lights out in years past, but he isn't doing so well this year. I wonder who's shown interest for them to even say that he's available?

What do you want/expect out of BMac tonight?
Dam8610 replied to JDsDirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I want 6 innings from him without giving up a HR. If he does that, I think the Sox will win. -
I hope 60, but that's not likely.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) Freel is a little older but he is cheap and plays a ton of positions. Wouldn't that make him good trade bait, especially since he's on a bad team that has almost no chance of competing?
-
Okay. I kind of thought the likelihood of the youngsters being traded was slim, but what about Freel? He'd fit perfectly with the "smallball" philosophy, with his .406 OBP and 21 SB, and he's 29 years old, so it's not like he's a top prospect or anything.

QUOTE(nvxplorer @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) For a closer to get a win he must first blow a save. That's why it's bad for closers to get wins. This assumes he is being used exclusively in a closer's role. Sorry, guess I should've used the green.
