  1. What's the current going rate for WAR? $9 million/WAR? Manny has averaged over 5 WAR/162 for his career, but the Sox would be paying him like a 4 WAR (More like 3 WAR toward the back end of the contract) player. How is that too much?
  2. If they weren't willing to go 8/280, this was over a long time ago.
  3. I've heard that too many times this offseason to believe it.
  4. Which happens first: 25,000 posts on this thread, or Manny signs?
  5. Someone in Manny's tax bracket isn't concerned with the per capita data. Illinois's income tax will take much less of his income, and while Cook County property taxes are some of the highest in the country, someone with Manny's wealth can just hire Madigan's property tax appeal firm and get their property taxes unreasonably lowered compared to those around him.
  6. Next year I think I'm going to pretend MLB offseason starts the day after NFL conference championship games. The way the past two offseasons have gone, I don't think I'll miss much.
  7. Portland Cubs has a really nice ring to it.
  8. You've obviously never met a Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs fan.
  9. Drew Brees is 6' and Russell Wilson is 5'11".
  10. What happens first: MM signs or All-Star Break?
  11. In the game for 3 batters or until finishing the inning. No getting another pitcher out of the bullpen until one of those conditions is met.
  12. If the title is supposed to parody the song "I'm Gonna Be", shouldn't it be "Manny Thread - I would read 600 pages and I would read 600 more"?
  13. I like adding the caveat of "3 batters or finish the inning", since the whole point is to cut down on mid inning pitching changes. Changing pitchers between innings isn't as much of a delay.
  14. Closers also tend to find ways to get outs even when they're not on their game. If you don't have confidence that your closer can close out a game, find a different closer.
  15. If you don't think a guy has it that day, don't put him out there, or be confident enough in him that you're willing to let him face 3 batters or finish the inning.
  16. If he's your closer, trust your closer to get the outs. That's why he's your closer. Pulling your closer because he has a rough start is bad managing.
  17. 3 batters or finish the inning shouldn't be a problem, and cutting down on pitching changes is a thing the game absolutely needs.
  18. I would think the MLBPA would propose some sort of draft reward system contingent on free agency spending. That doesn't necessarily reward winning teams while encouraging the worst teams with the lowest payrolls to spend in free agency, thus likely increasing parity.
  19. I think this is the way to go, and I like it for the reasons several have stated already. I also like the idea of a universal DH and a single trade deadline. I don't like rewarding winning teams in the draft, as it will reduce parity. That said, a lottery system was all the NBA needed to stop tanking, that would likely work with MLB as well.
  20. I'd love to see a salary floor of $75 million established, but I doubt the cheaper owners would ever allow it.
  21. Six years of control (which can be made into seven easily) is just way too much in any sport. That's going to be the majority of a player's career in most cases. MLBPA is going to need to get that reduced to 4 with no manipulation capability if they want their guys to get paid in free agency.
