  1. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) I agree with everything except the bolded. For example, if it comes down to the Sox and Yankees and both are offering him significant DH at bats but Yankees are offering ~$3 million more, I would bet on him taking the Yankees offer. That would contradict everything he's said and done to date. I guess we'll see what happens.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 08:12 AM) Of those four, really only the Mariners have a regular DH that would compete for ABs. Believe me, I love to follow the NPB and I want Otani on the White Sox BADLY (I subscribe to the PL streaming service and watched all of Otani's starts this year), but this one is looking to be very, very unlikely for us. Really, no AL team has less to offer him on paper than we do. We're not currently a contender, have the least amount of money to give, exist in an underperforming media market (given the Cubs and compared to LA/NYC), and we have a guy who will likely need to compete for DH at bats going forward (Abreu). On top of that, the Sox are one of the few teams who didn't bother to send anyone to go see him pitch this year, and there have been no indications that they've contacted his agent. To me, it appears that the Sox consciously chose to put their eggs in the Luis Robert basket instead of joining the scrum for Otani, knowing that they had a much better chance of landing Robert given their ability to spend big and offer a Cuban-friendly clubhouse. Well, if you believe Otani's actions and the reports on what he's said, the money isn't that big of a factor and he wants to go to a team that isn't traditionally considered to be a powerhouse. There are quite a few elements of the whole thing that give me hope that the White Sox have a nonzero chance in this race. I just hope the org pursues it.
  3. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) Yes it is. We're watching a future contender being rebuilt from the ground up and it's pretty damn cool. I hear ya. I just don't want to assume the Sox sign anyone like Machado. We all know that not every prospect will fulfill their projections so the Sox will have to to spend on free agents to fill in the holes, and I'm sure they will. I'm just not sure what those holes will be. 3B is a pretty glaring org hole, and the second best free agent in next year's class, who will be 26 at the time, just so happens to play 3B. Machado matches this team's needs so perfectly it doesn't make sense for the White Sox to not pursue him, and most teams who would hand out the kind of contact he'll want have their 3B situation resolved.
  4. QUOTE (Quin @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 12:54 PM) I do think Vizquel is a play to lure Maitan. Plus, we have a storied history of Venezuelan shortstops. Abraham Gutierrez, their second biggest bonus baby from that class, is also Venezuelan.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 12:49 PM) This is a great post. They probably have done way more indepth studies of each team, their 40 man rosters and who they have to protect to be able to project who will be available and who will be the mostly likely to pick players to get an idea of how far they need to go in protecting players. For a guy to get picked, is he going to have fairly high on the overall list of players out there. For example only 18 guys got picked last time around. It was 16 in 2015 and 14 in 2014. Is Guerrero going to be rated higher than that many players out there? I haven't seen a preview yet, but that is worth asking/exploring. This is a list of players from top 30 lists who are exposed. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/261944130/pr...osed-to-rule-5/ Dom Nunez, Jason Martin, and some of the arms seem interesting. Not much beyond that, though. It's a group in which I could see Jordan Guerrero in the top 5.
  6. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:32 PM) Ben Badler @BenBadler Another Braves update: The players who received their top four signing bonuses in 2016 will become free agents. bit.ly/2hTLUDk The White Sox should pursue all 4. No reason not to.
  7. How do you keep Covey, Saladino, Hanson, and Garcia and not protect Guerrero, Polo, and Peter?
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) White Sox equivalent is about Yolmer Sanchez, Carson Fulmer, and Nicky Delmonico. For Stanton AND Gordon? That's not a bad price. But Stanton's contract is terrible for the White Sox timeline.
  9. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) I don't think the Sox should trade for Stanton, but has any of this shored up OF played a MLB game yet? "Of the future" implies that those players are not on the MLB roster. That said, which group makes you more comfortable moving forward: A. Garcia L. Garcia Cordell Delmonico Tilson Engel Jimenez Polo Fisher Call Rutherford Robert OR Sanchez Burger
  10. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) Sox have been shafted by CBA picks for ages now. No other sport grants certain teams extra draft picks and pool money every year like mlb does, regardless of record. Every other sport has a cap, as well.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 01:36 PM) I dunno if it counts, but I feel like Sanchez has a better chance of filling the 3b spot until Berger is ready than Engel does of filling the CF spot. Maybe Leury takes over that spot out in CF, but that's my favorite weak spot right now. Luis Robert projects to the CF spot, so I like the future there much better than at 3B with Burger. I see Leury as the stopgap to Robert.
  12. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 01:23 PM) Who is Hulk? Da bessss, aka Eloy Jimenez.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) Mark Bowman‏Verified account @mlbbowman 6m6 minutes ago MLB will likely announce the findings of its Braves investigation within the next two days. Penalties could include fines, international market restrictions and the loss of international prospects (Maitan remains a strong possibility). Maitan is the biggest name, but they also signed a catcher, Abraham Gutierrez, for ~$3.5 million. Is he someone who, if released, would be worth bringing in?
  14. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 01:06 PM) There's an interesting team at #1 here... ESPN: Finding the best spot for Giancarlo Stanton Stanton makes zero sense for the White Sox. Their OF of the future is pretty shored up. It's 3B that poses the biggest long term concern (enter Manny Machado next offseason).
  15. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) This may have already been discussed, but would the Braves be able to potentially re-sign him? If their punishment goes like Boston's, they'll be out of the international market for at least a year once their prospects are released. That means no Maitan, no Otani, no anyone for at least the rest of this signing period. If the offense is severe enough, maybe even the next as well.
  16. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 08:37 AM) Pretty sure Maitan is going to take the highest bid (or near highest) which won’t be us. I’m pretty confident that we have at least $300k remaining if we want to throw a Hail Mary type offer though. If his deal is the same as the Red Sox prospects, every team will be allowed to offer him their entire pool. With the Red Sox guys, the first $300K (the amount of their original reported bonus) didn't count toward the new team's bonus pool. In Maitan's case, that would be the first $4.25 million, so Texas, for example, could offer him almost $8 million if he's granted the same status as the Red Sox prospects.
  17. By my count, 3 Republican Senators have come out as opposing the tax reform bill (Johnson, Murkowski, Collins). Hopefully this works out like ACA repeal.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 01:43 PM) You do that Rick Hahn is the ONLY GM to display literally 0 interest His quotes to the media on the subject give a different impression.
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 12:48 PM) Cool, I look forward to his 32-34 starts and 230-250 innings a season for the next 15 years. I sure hope he's good and healthy enough to average over 7 innings per start.
  20. QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 11:33 AM) I love seeing pitchers work their legs and core. Keep the arm loose, but get that lower half strong. Clemens and Juan Guzman come to mind. Exactly. It's not about "getting jacked", it's about working the right muscles to improve your effectiveness at your craft. The video is a great example of that, he's strength training his core and legs, which he needs strong for his velocity, rather than his arms, which need to be more flexible.
  21. QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) Otani isn't coming here, there's 0.00000% chance This has been discussed ad nauseam on the Otani thread, but I'm going to continue to believe in the possibility of him coming to the White Sox until he's signed somewhere, at which point it's either celebrate or move on.
  22. My ridiculously optimistic scenario: 1) Leury Garcia CF 2) Yoan Moncada 2B 3) Manny Machado 3B 4) Jose Abreu 1B 5) Eloy Jimenez RF 6) Shohei Otani DH 7) Zack Collins C 8) Nicky Delmonico LF 9) Tim Anderson SS Bench: IF Yolmer Sanchez, C Omar Narvaez, OF Ryan Cordell 1B/DH Casey Gillaspie 1) Carlos Rodon L 2) Shohei Otani R 3) Michael Kopech R 4) Lucas Giolito R 5) Reynaldo Lopez R CL Craig Kimbrel SU Carson Fulmer SU Thyago Vieira MR Zack Burdi MR Brian Clark MR Dane Dunning MR Spencer Adams MR Jace Fry/Aaron Bummer Top org prospects: 1) CF Luis Robert 2) SP Alec Hansen 3) SS Nick Madrigal 4) LF Blake Rutherford 5) SP Dylan Cease
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 09:01 PM) The men part of that graphic is sad.
  24. This is an excellent trade for reasons already mentioned. They can only offer Otani $300K, so trade the rest of it away to teams looking for an advantage in that race and hope that the money isn't a big factor for him as has been reported (and proven by the fact that he's not waiting two years for a 9 figure payday).
  25. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) This isn’t true. Otani made seven starts, and there were a minimum ten teams represented at all of them. The broadcast would pan up to the scout seats practically every time he touched 98+ Then journalists need to get their facts right. The article I read said he made one pitching appearance all year and got touched up for 4 runs in 1.1 innings.
