  1. QUOTE (Donaldo @ Mar 6, 2017 -> 06:48 PM) McNeil posts there on occasion, and he had an interesting observation about the new generation of sports talk hosts. Mac feels they think their purpose is to educate rather than entertain. That's pretty good. I never thought of that, but it's how I feel. Even worse are the people you come across who parrot all the "wisdom" they heard on Sports radio.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 4, 2017 -> 06:23 PM) Just let the Oklahoma State House start working with ICE, VOICE and DHS. TULSA, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma lawmaker who once likened Islam to cancer required Muslims to answer several written questions — including, "Do you Still beat your wife?" — before agreeing to meet with them. This is how you're supposed to ask this question.
  3. My daughter became a vegan a year ago, so this year I'm giving up meat. I'll basically be a vegan, but I'm allowing myself milk for cereal (I'll try the almond milk, but not sure I'll like it). I'm also not going to check labels for eggs in things like bread. I won't be eating sweets, either. So far, it hasn't been difficult. I didn't get ashes. I usually do, but I had a conflict with the mass time. I'm not super religious, either. I go to church, but I'm pretty much agnostic.
  4. So what happened between Cutler and Marshall? They were BFFs.
  5. I was at the game today. I bought 3 tickets on Seat Geek and only spent $12. One of the perks of being a Sox fan is no competition. I paid more for parking.? I don't think you can draw much of a conclusion from a spring game. It's barely baseball. It was nice to see some aggressive base running, and most of the young guys had some playing time.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 11:24 PM) I killed all my posts since they were so offensive. I'll shut up about Trump since it causes so much consternation. Keep posting your opinions. There's nothing offensive about your optimism. I doubt you'd be as optimistic if HC had given the EXACT speech Trump just gave, but like any other post in this (or any) thread, if people don't agree, they can respond or ignore. Don't let them bully you out of here. It would be an affront to our First Lady's anti-bullying platform.
  7. Why is it that so many tv shows and sports on tv are next to impossible to hear? It's like the background noise is always louder than the dialogue and announcers. I have nice flat screens and sound systems, but too often I can't hear the show I'm watching. I think I was happier with my 900lb 32" magnavox. Didn't look great, but at least I wasn't constantly turning to whoever I'm watching with and saying, "what did he say?"
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 15, 2017 -> 04:23 PM) Bannon complaining about Breitbart being unfair, what? I'm choosing to read this in my Stone Cold Steve Austin voice.
  9. If Adele's music was the best music of 2016, it was a bad year for music. I don't hate Adele, either, but I don't think I made it through "Hello" one time.
  10. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 26, 2017 -> 03:03 PM) As far as your story, I see it as reigning example of how a lack of competition brings a horrible service. That being said, the DMV is an awful, awful place. I've been to the DMV in Arizona four or five times in the last year (I moved, kid got permit, took test, got license, etc). People working there were all pleasant and efficient. It was never fast, but four or five people taking care of forty people (with various levels of intelligence and ability to properly fill out forms and follow instructions), I don't know that it would be much better if there was competition. In fact, the more we downsize some government services, the worse service is going to get. I don't see how the DMV is really any different than a line at an airport, the grocery store, the bank, a fast food restaurant at lunchtime, or a line at the doctors office. Part of the problem is that people have to expect to wait. If you're rude or frustrated when you get to the counter, expect a less than friendly reception. If you're a jerk. They might go slower. Government worker or private sector employee - they're all just people. I don't really see a lot of hustle from customer service people anywhere I go.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 1, 2017 -> 10:11 AM) Completely random, but one of my friends is Oppenheimer's great-niece. She sounds fund.
  12. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 29, 2017 -> 07:38 AM) They are too spineless to oppose the party. The threat of losing their support and jobs is too much for them to support what's right. And that's where we are with our government. If any good comes out of Trump, hopefully it's politicians standing up for what they think is right, regardless of party politics. I think the idea that all Republicans believe ABC and all Democrats believe XYZ is ridiculous. It's possible for a Democrat to be fiscally conservative or for a Republican to be in favor of "Obamacare." They're just afraid to say it. What we have now is politicians who vote everything according to the party line. Often, that's not best for the people they serve. And they are supposed to be voting with the best interests of their constituents in mind. Trump is a disaster, but maybe he's doing all a favor by getting people interested and involved in politics.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 16, 2017 -> 11:58 AM) He alluded to it in the interview on the field with Erin Andrews...he said something like "At times we were just going with schoolyard stuff out there" or something to that effect. They showed the huddle before the last play, and Rodgers was talking to one of the receivers and using his arm to illustrate the route. I'm a Bears fan, but I have always had a hard time rooting against both Favre and Rodgers. I was hoping KC would win so I'd have a team to pull for (something about the Falcons I've never liked), but I guess I have to root for the Falcons from this point.
  14. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 14, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) Going into election day, I thought Trump winning was impossible. Now I honestly think that only Obama could have beat him. That's exactly how I feel.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 12:22 AM) Biden would have won in a landslide over The Donald Nobody was beating Trump this year. Trump would have done the same thing to Biden, Sanders, Warren, etc that he did to Hillary and all the Republicans he beat. He would have made it about personal attacks. Normal politicians don't know how to respond to that. Trump won the nomination of his party and the presidency without offering real, substantive plans for his presidency. The voters didn't care. They don't care that since the election, he has already backed away from and changed many of the plans he did run on. It was the perfect strorm. It should be an interesting few years.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 05:17 AM) Anja Taylor Joy became a rising star in The Witch, but nobody other than the critics really loved it. Fences was a pretty darned powerful little picture. Denzel and Viola Davis deserve all the accolades they're receiving. Lots of baseball references in there as well (takes place in 1957-1965ish Pittsburgh). Davis was good in Fences, but Denzel totally over acted.
  17. I'm half way through the fourth hour, and I would have been happy to have North, Jiggets & McNeil up there for the whole show. All of that was like a flash back to transitions from twenty years ago. The Murphy stuff was a mixture of funny and undignified. I think I could have done without it (though I always thought Murph was a tool). The most poignant thing so far was Goff. He was great, and his tribute to TB was so heartfelt. Just finished. Not at all surprising that Bernstein made it about himself. If I produced the show, I would have started with Bernstein, assorted guests in the middle, with the Mosters individually, then the Monsters together with the Heavy Fuel Crew, then finished with McNeil and Boers.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 09:30 AM) If there was a really good qb at 3 i'd be happy to draft them, but just prioritizing "getting a QB" is not worth it. edit: for example - getting Jay Cutler Jay Cutler had way more going for him when he was acquired than Garrapolo does today. It didn't work out, but it was well worth the risk.

  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 29, 2016 -> 08:25 AM) Football is all about depth and injuries. The Bears are not deep enough to play well through injuries. The drop from starter to backup is too steep. When the acquire enough talent to make that difference less drastic, they can begin to compete every year.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 29, 2016 -> 08:26 AM) I dont think the fan base is split by baseball preference. People unloaded tickets because its cold and they suck. And it was less than 70% full. Said mostly in jest, but since attendance and loyalty is a hot button topic, I find it funny that it's ok for Chicago fans of other teams to go or not go based on performance of the team. But, when Sox fans stay home for a crappy team, it says something about their loyalty.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 28, 2016 -> 02:31 PM) I don't see how Pace or Fox survive a 6-10 or 7-9 season in 2017. It is going to be hard avoiding that without a better QB. I've seen and heard fans calling for the end of Pace and/or Fox at various times in the last year. I find it odd since the fanbase is primarily made up of Sox and Cubs fans and a media that fully supports the short term tank for talent with an eye for a better future. Isn't that what the Bears have been doing? They've dumped guys like Gould, Slaussen, Marshall, Bennett and Briggs and replaced them with younger, cheaper talent. Yet, there doesn't seem to be any patience when the Bears lose. Side note - Soldier Field was pretty empty Saturday. Looked about 70% full. I guess the always loyal Cubs/Bears fans went to the game, and the hard to please Sox/Bears fans stayed home.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 26, 2016 -> 09:03 AM) Awesome find on youtube 1991 - the pre-everyone in the crowd has to wear a jersey era.
  24. Not a particularly meaningful game in 1991, but we brought a cousin from England with and he was pretty bored because the crowd wasn't as active and vocal as the crowds at sporting events in England. However, the crowd after the big hit was electric. Walking back to our car, even my cousin was caught up in the atmosphere. I just watched it again - still awesome. Oh, and the ball landed a few rows away from us.
  25. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:45 PM) Do the podcast the show when it's over or anything? There's a montage of great moments from the show here. I haven't listened to it, though. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/12/22/lis...oments-montage/
