QUOTE (hi8is @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 01:31 PM) Comiskey Park by Guaranteed Rate Doesn't sound great, but I would like it if the sponsor just called the place Comiskey and then just dominated the signage throughout the park, live ads read by the announcers, etc. At some point, the identity of the company that sponsors the naming rights (United, US Cellular, Wrigley) gets lost. I don't think of United Airlines when the announcers at the Bulls game say "live from the United Center...." I know that maybe it's there subliminally, but I'd say a more overt message like "this 20 second timeout is brought to you by United Airlines..." Is more effective.

Look around the next time you're at a game. Most fans barely pay attention during the anthem - never mind actually standing at attention. Very few actually sing (if they even know the words). Of course, if you're a Blackhawks fan, you stand a scream during the anthem, because that shows support for our military. And it doesn't just happen in Chicago. Hawks fans do it at road games, too, if they make up a large amount of the crowd. Remember, they're cheering to support our military, not because they are Hawks fans. Oddly, the same fans don't show their support for the military by screaming through the anthem at other Chicago sports events. Don't see it at Wrigley. Not at GRate field. Not at Soldier. Same fans, but they don't honor our military the same way as they do at Hawks games.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Ya I agree. Im certainly not giving him any credit for doing it, its a pretty empty gesture for someone with his money. I just think its wrong for people to claim he shouldnt have the right to do it, not that that was what you personally were saying. He is sitting to draw attention to an injustice he sees. That's been a success. People are talking about it and why he's protesting. Will it change anything? Probably not, but maybe it furthers the discussion of police brutality and gets other people involved. I'd sure rather have a guy sit out the anthem than walk up to a cop and shoot him.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 31, 2016 -> 07:19 PM) Went to my first Cubs game in probably 15 years if not more(it's been so long I wasn't aware they had no stadium parking until we got there), have to say the atmosphere at the game was so much cooler than anything I've experienced at a sox game. I know they are a great team this season which helps but it was also just a regular season game against an opponent they had crushed all season long. Go to a Sox game when they have a winning record and a full house - same experience.

1. The Wire. My wife & I binge watched the whole thing in a month or so. I've been thinking about going back and watching it. 2. GofT. I love 90% of this show, but I'm sure I'm in the minority in not liking the Mother of Dragons storyline. And I thought Dinklage had a bad season. 3. Really, probably number 2, but I moved before the last season, and I've still never seen that season. Another one I want to revisit. I came back in to add that Sopranos was so revolutionary that it might suffer a little compared to some modern stuff, but for its time it was really, really great. Much like athletes, it's more fair to compare these shows to how they stacked up against tv at the same time.

Athletes get criticized when they don't take stands (Michael Jordan) and when they do (Muhammad Ali). Whether they are correct or wrong, it is their right to protest. That is one of the freedoms that our soldiers have afforded us. You can disagree with him. That is your right. The flag represents both things.

Illinois High School Football Thread

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) Coverage is diminishing in Chicago. Both the trib and suntimes are now bare bones with little to no freelancers. Daily Herald is probably best for coverage now. Kind of sad Agree, very sad. I loved the high school coverage in the Sun Times in the mid-80s into the 90s. They covered Cathilic league, city, and suburban pretty well. Scores and features. It's too bad that that's gone away. Almost all sports coverage just stinks now. I'll give the podcast a listen. Good luck with it. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 07:28 AM) Colin Kapaernick didn't stand for the National Anthem because he doesn't want to support a flag/country who oppress black people If that's a protest he wants to make, good for him. That's one of the freedoms the flag represents. -
At this point, I'm just calling it Sox park because it's bound to change every 7-10 years. It's not a great name, but other than being named after a company I've never heard of and the name not rolling of the tongue, I don't see how it's different from Wrigley or Busch or whatever. Actually, I think it's more offensive for the Yankees to knock down Yankee stadium and build a new place and call it the same thing. Same with Comiskey. As far as corporate promotions go, I'm more offended when the Sox have a hat giveaway and the Pepsi logo is as big as the Sox logo. Those go straight to Goodwill.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 19, 2016 -> 11:41 PM) Yes but he didn't lie about it. Not that he wasn't a liar. I stand by my comment they all are liars and we should impeach every fricking one of 'em til we get an Honest Abe so to speak. Reagan DID lie about it. In fact, he famously declared that he would never negotiate with terrorists and pay for hostages. Until he did. Go ahead and look it up. Obama did pay Iran money the US owed them, but he refused to do it until they freed some Americans. Pretty different, actually. So, really, technically Obama did NOT lie about paying for hostages.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 19, 2016 -> 09:40 PM) Did you read the story?? Obama LIED to the American public. Hillary lies all the time as well. If only we could go back to the days when President Reagan was doing much the same thing - trading arms with Iran for hostages.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 08:02 PM) I didn't want to start a new thread unless I could do a poll within a thread. But PLEASE answer this. Congratulations, Democrats. I concede and Hillary Rodham Clinton is our next President against my wishes. However, please answer this question in poll format. Q-After eight years, how will we feel about Hillary's Presidency? a.) Great. She will be the best since Kennedy. Or best since her husband. b.) Awful. She will be a fricking disaster. c.) Same ol same ol. Our country will continue to flounder, the economy will continue to be piss poor and the world will remain very dangerous. My vote: b. C. Same ol same ol. Possibly with a slight lean toward A. However, I disagree with the second part of your C option. I'd actually like to know, Greg, how YOUR life is any worse now than it was under GWB. And, if it is, how is it the result of any of Obama's policies.

Yanks Owner says Social Media influenced Decision
Middle Buffalo replied to Hatchetman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 18, 2016 -> 08:57 AM) I dont know if I agree with social media influencing any decisions. I wouldn't worry about it. If these guys based their decisions on social media, they'd be too busy effing themselves to actually have time to make fans' suggested roster moves. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2016 -> 03:06 PM) Not to mention many slamming Trump today are Republicans. Lyin Donald's campaign is a total disaster. I think one of Trump's greatest transgressions was calling Michael Bloomberg "Little." I can't respect that. "Little" is Marco Rubio. It's like when a rapper rhymes a word with the same word. Just lazy.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 09:16 PM) Trump wasn't calling for Hillary's assassination. Please get with it, people. That is what he implied, and I don't really see how one can read the words he said or watch video of it and come to any other conclusion. Did he mean it? I'd guess not, but Trump routinely says something one day, and then walks it back the next. We really can't have that in our President.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 03:26 PM) I just wish the Hillary fans and this board is full of them would admit Hillary has been given this election thanks to the FBI director and media. That's all I wish. It also would help if you admitted she is a horrible choice for President, albeit a better choice than Trump. Hillary is no better or worse than 99% of politicians when it comes to misdeeds. They're all guilty of bending the rules - Republicans and Democrats alike, including, I'm sure, Donald Trump. Greg sounds like a Notre Dame fan who accuses other schools of cheating and being incredulous to the idea that his team could possibly be doing the same. My dad is like that. I always point out that Notre Dame cheats, and then he says, "Well, I don't know..." before trailing off. PS - I'm a Notre Dame fan, too. But, I can recognize that it would be a little odd to think that a guy like Lou Holtz was busted for cheating at every school he coached but Notre Dame. The sainted Lou Holtz is a Trump supporter, incidentally. So, Greg, in this election, there are two viable candidates, and the question is if Trump is really a person you want to be President based on his qualifications. Yet, you seem to be more interested in trashing the other candidate personally rather than making a fact based argument that points out her deficiencies politically. You even say that Hillary is a horrible choice, "albeit a better choice than Trump." Then, what are you arguing about? Just vote for Trump - the worse choice in your estimation, or go with the candidate that you feel is more qualified but don't like. It's funny that, among other things, you talk about all the free publicity Hillary has received. Nobody, probably ever, has received as much free publicity as Trump did during the Republican election campaign. It was borderline illegal for him to be calling into radio and tv shows daily because candidates are supposed to be afforded equal time. Not sure how he got away with that.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 04:44 AM) I was shocked but than kind of understood, but damn that was cold. I was falling asleep and when the first two split it, I thought Johnny would for sure. The way they edited it, I was thinking it was a fake out and he'd split it with her, but than when he said he was taking it all himself, I jumped out of bed in shock. Can't wait to watch reunion after the show. I haven't listened, but JBananas is on Bill Simmons' latest podcast.

I would hold on to Frazier unless someone blows them away because 3b is so difficult to fill. I'd also hold on to Sale. Everyone else is up for grabs, though I'd also have to be blown away for Q. I know that's pretty conservative and unlikely to make a big difference, but I really don't think they're that far away from a playoff team. Honestly, if Abreu was hitting like he's expected to hit, they'd probably have five more wins. He's not supposed to be a .275 singles hitter. Trade bullpen guys. Trade Shields. If the Sox can get a few 5-10 rated prospects in someone's system for Robertson, Duke, Cabrera, et al, they can build up their system. They don't have to shoot for the top prospects. Those guys aren't guaranteed, anyway, so why get rid of the few really good players you have for the chance a prospect will become a great player? Package a few of them together, and you might pull one really good prospect from Boston, Texas, etc.
-
I don't believe the Sox could get proper value in return for Sale, and, maybe more importantly, I'm not sure they could identify the right guys in return. I really don't want a bunch of unproven prospects for a top 5 pitcher in baseball. Prospects fail all the time - especially when they are White Sox prospects.
